I too am all in favor or a pipe running east. Pipelines running all directions to ensure market. However I question Mulcair's motive. Most of us in the west are suspicious of any move by easterners to gain access to resources for their own benifit. We remember the NEP quite well.
If Mulcair wants it, he'll push for special discounted rates for PQ. This will piss off US pipeline customers who'll up there orders ensuring it never makes it to PQ.

"We remember the NEP quite well."

As a former Albertan I will never forget it, that is a fact. Cost me my business, almost cost me my marriage and there is approximately 325,000 dollars owed to me that I'll never see again. Then it cost me 10 years of my life trying to dig my way out from under all that.

No, I will never forget the NEP nor the government that brought it into being. NEVER!
The easterners will try to do whatever they can to get western oil money to go east. They will try to do this by imposing a carbon tax or by trying to regulate the price of oil easterners pay for western oil.
We in the west should never allow ourselves to be put in a position where the easterners can dictate our options in marketing our oil. That's why it's so important to now get the Northern Gateway pipeline built and the XL Keystone line built. Then if the easterners start to push us around as far as price goes, we will always have options as to where we can sell our oil.

When you sell a (crown) company (Petro Can) to other depts of your company (Govt), you still own it.
Yep, the people of Canada (Gov) owned Petro Canada. The Gov then sold it again to Canadians by selling Canadians Petro Canada shares.
Then it couldn't make sh^t so it got sold to a public company at a greatly reduced price.
Leave it to the Libs to screw things up royally !!

The reason Mulcair supports the east west oil pipeline is because if his party forms the Government he will then be able to force a made in Canada Oil price policy.

I'm not sure what is worse: Canadian jobs for Canadian people, or hearing people like you gripe over "having to support" all the unemployed Canadians with YOUR tax dollars.

No reason Canadians should be unemployed today. We immigrate over 250,000 people a year to do jobs lazy Canadians don't want to do!!
Why should the government create jobs for Canadians if they don't want to fill them?

No, once you start buying from the west, you will have to pay the same as your paying now!! No discounts for easterners I'm afraid!!
You don't know much about how this works eh, lol.

Well we might just cut you of Transfer Payments. Then what you gonna do? You just might wind up freezing in the dark..eh!!
We'll just come take it by force, lol.

I could have my history wrong here but wasnt forcing the west to ship/sell their stuff to the east the thing which pissed everyone off about NEP?
No one is forcing anyone, Suncor and Enbridge are planning to do it on their own.

Your not very bright, are you?
LOL, the irony is palpable.

Alberta alone can produce more ooil than eastern Canada can consume therefore NG is vital to national interests. All the western provinces produce oil and gas as well as coal.

At some point, it will make sense to spend money (a lot) on the infrastructure to run nat gas to all the urban centers in Eastern Canada. In terms of an energy source, it will produce all of the heat and electricity you will need to run the economy... In terms of the amount of nat gas in the ground, it is found in many places in Canada to the tune of trillions of MMcf and is dirt cheap at this point.

By your logiic we should close down Roberts Bank coal port and all the jobs that go with it so the east can have our coal.

I gotta agree with you there... Economic nationalism is myopic and very costly... One of the big reasons that gas isn't cheaper in Eastern Canada is because it is being shipped to the US where the p/ls exist, refined into gasoline (aviation fuel, diesel, etc) and then shipped back North across the border to consumers in Canada.

The smart 'nationalist' move would be to expand Canada's infrastructure and value-add facilities and sell to the international markets.. Capacity would obviously include supply of product to accommodate the domestic market, but the focus in terms of GDP and overall good for the nation will be to service markets outside of Canada

First of all I hope they stop the XL pipeline and the one destined to cross BC
known as Enbridge. No I am not some old hippy but I am an economic
nationalist who believe's we should first service our own markets for resources
and secondly we should sell any excess as finished product only no crude.
East West sounds good to me.
As a modern state in the twenty first century we should indeed have a National
Energy Policy. In the future it would be a strength not a weakness. Looking
after Canadians needs first should be top of the list.

Well said! We should not be selling raw materials such as crude or logs to other nations. That is exporting Canadian jobs. We should be adding value to our resources, refining all of our crude in this country and proving finished wood products for export.
