Alberta alone can produce more ooil than eastern Canada can consume therefore NG is vital to national interests. All the western provinces produce oil and gas as well as coal.
At some point, it will make sense to spend money (a lot) on the infrastructure to run nat gas to all the urban centers in Eastern Canada. In terms of an energy source, it will produce all of the heat and electricity you will need to run the economy... In terms of the amount of nat gas in the ground, it is found in many places in Canada to the tune of trillions of MMcf and is dirt cheap at this point.
By your logiic we should close down Roberts Bank coal port and all the jobs that go with it so the east can have our coal.
I gotta agree with you there... Economic nationalism is myopic and very costly... One of the big reasons that gas isn't cheaper in Eastern Canada is because it is being shipped to the US where the p/ls exist, refined into gasoline (aviation fuel, diesel, etc) and then shipped back North across the border to consumers in Canada.
The smart 'nationalist' move would be to expand Canada's infrastructure and value-add facilities and sell to the international markets.. Capacity would obviously include supply of product to accommodate the domestic market, but the focus in terms of GDP and overall good for the nation will be to service markets outside of Canada
