TORONTO - Classic rock fans and radio stations across Canada have decided that a ruling against Dire Straits' 1985 hit "Money For Nothing" simply ain't workin'.
Days after the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council ruled the song unfit for radio because of a gay slur in its lyrics, radio stations in Halifax and Edmonton planned to rebel by playing an unedited version of the song on repeat for a full hour.
Meanwhile, an outcry from fans continued to reverberate through the Internet, with commentators debating the decision furiously across various formats — "Dire Straits" and "CBSC" were both still trending topics on Twitter in Canada.
Even Dire Straits keyboardist Guy Fletcher weighed in on his personal website, responding to fans' questions by calling the decision "unbelievable" and referencing a conversation with the song's writer, Mark Knopfler.
"Mark tells me that due to the ban, he has now substituted the word faggot for 'fudger'.... for Canada," Fletcher wrote.

Understand that he has to sing fudger, because of the extra syllables, fudge packer just isn't going to work.

The Canadian Council Of Broadcast Standards are nobody. I don't think they can actually ban anything. If it comes to a fight with broadcasters they will lose. Years ago I bought the new Dire Straits LP and copied it onto a CD. I probably listen to it two or three times a year.

What is interesting is that their ban applies to private radio stations - in other words, not the CBC.

Re: Stupid on the loose

Just curious, have they deemed the word "nigger" offensive in rap music?

The irony if you used "Nigger" in a room, you'll probably incite a greater reaction from a room of "Whites" as opposed from "Blacks".

Rather synamous of the Boomer Generation (worst), most of the words we consider "offensive" weren't considered such until the 1970s.

I think this is the ultimate in politically correct stupidity. And I also think it doesn't matter. The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council is an organization created by Canada's private broadcasters, its decisions have no legal force and compliance with its directives is voluntary. And I hope nobody pays any attention to this decision. I have two recorded versions of the song, one's about 8 minutes long and includes the line about faggots, the other's about 4 minutes long and doesn't.

I also think some people are way too sensitive about things that wouldn't matter if they wouldn't draw attention to them. I remember a Globe&Mail editorial cartoon from years ago accompanying an article about racism in hockey, commenting on how few black men there are in the professional game, considering how dominant black men are in other professional sports. It was a drawing of a huge black man in hockey gear, with a word balloon above him with the single word, "Honckey" in it. Well, honky is a slur black people use for white people. Was I offended? No, I thought it was funny and clever. People need to lighten up and not take themselves so @!#%@#$ seriously.

I find all the religious shows on TV offensive. Ban them now. Also ban any song that mentions god. Ban all rap song that say kill whitey. Actually just banning rap would be ok.
Pretty sure I can think of another few thousand things that must be banned as well if I had the time to think about it

Lyrics below:

“Now look at them yo-yo's, that's the way you do it.
You play GOD In Your IVORY Tower.
That ain't workin', that's the way you do it.
POWER for nothin' and your ETHICS for free.

Now that ain't workin', that's the way you do it.
Lemme tell ya them guys ain't SMART.
Maybe get a blister on your MIDDLE finger.
Maybe get a SMELLY BURIED thumb.”

“We gotta GUIDE that microwave LINGO.
Custom RULINGS deliveries.
We gotta SERVE THESE LONER MINORITIES.
We gotta MUTE these WORLD-WIDE HIT SONGS.”

“The little faggots with the earring and the makeup.
Yeah, buddy that's C-B-S-C .
Those little faggots got their own HYUNDAYs.
Those little faggots gotta CLEAR the AIR!”

Pass it on! This decision needs to CHANGE!!

All the best!

This is political correctness gone too far. The song was written over 20 years ago, they're just staring to make an issue of it now? Rap isn't offensive? When every second words are "Mother F" this and "Mother F" that, along with all the sexual innuendo contained in songs these days. If the CRTC wanted to drop the hammer on ALL offensive music, there wouldn't be anything left to play. Many songs are edited for content at time of air play. "You Oughta Know", by Alanis Morissette, springs to mind, she didn't re perform a version, for air play, the offensive lyric is bleeped, or blanked out. It's just like re running "All in the Family", now, it's on some channel, I'm sure, with no problem. If they tried to re-create that show in this day and age, all hell would break loose, but it wasn't created in this day and age. That's the point, that was then, this is now. There was a sketch done on S&L from the 70's with Chevy Chase, and Richard Pryor, try to find it. You have to watch it, to understand WOW, THAT was offensive. Funny, but offensive. I'm sure it pi#$ed off people, even then. It seems like the special interest group who whines the loudest, gets to make policy. Something, is ALWAYS going to offend somebody, suck it up.
