Politely invited by Alberta’s Premier Alison Redford to lend support to her province’s effort to defend its oil industry — which has been a key reason Canada has avoided recession — Mr. McGuinty responded with a churlish refusal.

So, when the world economy tanked, and demand for oil went down, driving the price of oil down, it was the oil industry which kept us from a recession? Ok...There was indeed a recession, my cousin survived in Calgary on her savings during the downturn. Now she's got contracts again as a HR consultant.
One of the first companies to lead the oilsands industry out of the recession was Imperial Oil Limited and ExxonMobil Canada, which approved the first phase of the $8 billion Kearl Lake oilsands project in May 2009.

When the recession hit, Imperial decided to take eight extra months to rework costs because the cancellation of competing projects stopped the cost escalation that plagued construction projects during the last oil boom in Alberta.

Imperial squeezed out costs by negotiating new contracts with construction service providers and held off ordering equipment to get the best price.

Certainly lets one know at a glance who is capable of independent thought - but still has to see their name in lights....

Re: Ontario Blames the Oil Sands for their Incompetance

How the hell did this dimwit get to be leader of the Ontario Liberal Party? He sounds like an apologist for FOX News. What province is he going to blame next - Quebec for exporting electricity to the US; Saskatchewan for exporting potash; BC for exporting forestry products; or Ontario for exporting nickel and other metals. Oops forget the last one - can't place any of the blame on his home province.

A high dollar does hurt Ontario industry, whereas a few years ago we had a trade surplus (though still had a net outflow of capital, a negative cash balance) today, even with inflated price of oil our trade balance (not to mention cash) has entered the red (the CBC no longer reports trade balance figures lulz). This indicates a lot of our oil industry has stock held by non-residents.
