Impact on Bus Security:

Brutal bus killing leaves passengers asking questions about security
http://www.thechronicleherald.ca/Front/1070711.html

Passengers wait outside a Greyhound bus late Wednesday near Portage La Prairie, Man.

TORONTO — A bloody killing aboard a Greyhound bus in Manitoba that left one person beheaded had bus passengers elsewhere in the country shaken and concerned about a lack of bus security, although experts say there’s little that can be done.

Passengers on the Edmonton-to-Winnipeg bus Wednesday night described a completely unprovoked attack in which a man calmly stabbed his seatmate dozens of times, then set about methodically carving up the body. No one else was injured.

RCMP have not confirmed the victim was decapitated but say they have one person in custody. The victim was not identified.

"Hearing about this incident really worries me," said Donna Ryder, 56, who was waiting Thursday at the bus depot in Toronto.

"I’m in a wheelchair and what would I be able to do to defend myself? Probably nothing. So that’s really scary."

Ryder, who was heading to Kitchener, Ont., said buses are essentially the only way she can get around the province, as her wheelchair won’t fit on Via Rail trains. As it is her main option for travel, a lack of security is troubling, she said.

"I guess we’re going to have to go the airline way, maybe have a search and baggage check, X-ray maybe," she said.

"Really, I don’t know what you can do about security anymore."

Brian Bowey, 54, of Senlac, Sask., was in Edmonton waiting for a bus home. He said the killing in Manitoba, about 15 kilometres west of Portage la Prairie, had him on edge.

"After that going on, I’m kind of nervous getting on and off," he said.

Bowey suggested not letting passengers have any baggage on board buses.

"Maybe that would be an answer, to make everyone put everything underneath instead of allowing any carry-on," he said.

Some passengers said there should be security personnel riding on the buses or screening passengers and their bags, as in airports. But some experts say that’s just not realistic.

"Because of the nature of the industry, which is servicing a lot of small towns, with pickups right along the side of the highway, we’re not dealing with the same kind of a controlled environment like an airport," said David Carroll, the director of safety and maintenance with Motor Coach Canada.

"It would be extremely difficult and impractical to introduce screening devices, baggage checks, at all these various locations. I don’t think that’s the answer. . . . It just happened to be on a bus. It could just as easily happened in a theatre, in a bar, in a shopping centre."

Robin West, the Canadian director of the Amalgamated Transit Union, said the financial and manpower costs of any large-scale security measures such as security personnel on every bus or airport-style screening would not make it an attractive option for the bus companies.

"It’s brought to light (the question of) is there a possibility of security and screening and stuff? But I’ve got to be honest with you — I don’t know that there is, in most cases. I just don’t know how, feasibly, it could be done."

Instead, he suggested putting cameras on buses would go a long way toward deterring crime and providing passengers with some peace of mind.

Ian Jarvis, a contract bus driver in Toronto who does not work for Greyhound, said it would be hard to prevent such an isolated and extreme incident. Besides, he said, people may not be willing to pay for extra security.

"People use the bus because it’s cheap. It’s affordable. They’re not going to want to pay two or three people to stand there with a metal detector," he said.

What on earth would be the point of security? Not to sound jaded but, criminals will find ways. They'll find weapons. Choke someone to death with their luggage strap or beat them with your bear hands. And bonus, you've made sure no one else has so much as a pocket knife to fight back with.

What? So now you're going to blame video games?

The guy was in his 40's.... I'm in my late 20's and was born and raised through the Atari age right up to the Wii's and 360's today.... I have yet to saw anybody's head off.

An unfounded claim I must say.

Don't blame video, blame the fact that people have to raise themselves all too often and they have witnessed wayyyyy more violence than I ever did by the time they are ten! Geesh

I think stuff like this plays in too linda, modern media coverage of it I mean. It used to be that an incident like this wouldn't be covered in detail until the late night news. They'd comment on it during the day vaguely, and wait until later in the night to give details, once kids should be in bed. Now, I can't even turn on the radio unless I'm sitting next to it to switch it off incase they start talking about it. I'm sure not all parents are as consienscious about making sure their kids don't hear about this gruesomeness.

These sort of news reports, personally, I think don't need to be blocked until late at night, but they should be properly explained to the children, by the parent so they understand what happened, why if that is available, and talk about how it makes you and the children feel. I remember reading about the Holocaust in great detail when I was 8.... the information isn't the problem, the problem is teaching people how to deal with that information properly.

imo.

Some of the stuff suggested, like the camera, seems odd. I don't think a Camera would deter this.

I think people need perspective. You are never going to be 100% safe in public. Ever.

And at least he didn't explode and kill everyone.

That's a fair point... but... right now it's trying to explain something they can't possibly grasp. My kids still think that a skinned knee should warrant an ER visit. They have no grasp of the sheer damage a human body can suffer. Maybe some kids do at their age, maybe some kids have seen worse, seen bones break and seen flesh ripped open, but mine haven't. They don't get it. You can't explain something like this to them. It's beyond their current reality. And I don't really feel a need to shatter their view just yet.

Who's going to explain it to the kids that are being raised on auto pilot? I know some kids better than their parents know them,....some people just shouldn't of had kids...they haven't the time of day for them...it's easy for a person to suggest to teach a child how to deal with info properly and perhaps you do....I am sure Karrie does....but..........

Well that's fair enough... I mean, everybody lives a different life and in different communities, with parents who have different backgrounds.

Myself, I was surrounded by WWII stuff from the day I was born.... I can not expect everybody to have the same level of understanding or education on those things as I did as a kid, just as I wasn't experienced in many other factors of humanity that perhaps your children are educated in.

We're all different, and we all have to approach things differently sometimes.

I'm sorry all but I just can't pretend I care that much. Does that make me a bad person? I don't know and frankly I don't care. It's the way I am.

I have taken a knife away from someone before. I even linked here to a site with books and training videos on how to defend yourself. I said I thought it would be a good idea if everyone learnt how to use a knife and I still stand by that sentiment - now more than before.

I don't feel threatened by wing nuts like this guy part of the reason I suppose is that I do make fun of them. Maybe I'm hiding but I don't think so. I have always moved toward danger not away from it.

This poor guy didn't have a choice to move 'away or toward', his life was taken so fast.
It would not have mattered what weapon he could have been carrying, he didn't have a
chance to use it.
This is a very unusual happening in our country, I'm sure you can understand why
so many are 'shocked', it is a normal reaction.
I'm sure the dead man didn't feel threatened by this guy either, or he would not
have been sitting beside him in the first place, it could have been any one of us,
well maybe, I wouldn't have been sitting in the same seat as a man, if I was by myself,
I would look for a more comfortable setting when I got on the bus, but maybe if the
bus was full, I would have no choice.
I will be watching for the full story concerning the murderers past and present behavior before this crime.

In the interests of saving fuel costs, Greyhound very often blends runs to carry a better revenue load - hence, fewer empty seats.

You are new and your first statement is beyond my comprehension. It's Sunday, chill. We are not the enemy, we discuss and evaluate.
If what you have read about this and/or have a loved one or friend involved we empathize and care about your plight.
Please try to be civil rather than making inflammatory remarks and accusations, it'll work out. Give it some down time.

Sorry.. but, this thread had died off almost a WEEK ago. YOU'RE the one dragging it back up to 'make your day' and have your say. Don't point fingers. Welcome to our forum, and I'm glad you've found a thread you're impassioned about. But, take a good hard look before casting blame around. We're something of a family in here... hanging out, talking about the news. Don't try to tell me you don't discuss the news in your home. Well, we do too. You've stumbled across our convo, as twisted and awful as it turned out (yes, that happens sometimes, even off the net).

I hope you'll take the time to dig around and see if there are other which spark as much desire to discuss.

" What a thing to have happen. Condolences to the family of the victim and kudos to the brave guy who took charge and kept things from getting worse. "

Umm . . . .no offense . . . . but after hearing the witness accounts and the police reports, the victim was gutted, beheaded, has his ears, nose and lips cut off, and was being eaten by another person. How much worse can it get????

Here's a first hand account :

Of course, if you mean that if MR. PSYCHO had a gun, then it may have been possible that there wouldn't have been a soul left to tell us what happened.

Either way, personally, what happened that night to just the one person was already too much IMO.

Well isn't that just hypocritical of you? Last I checked, I or anybody else in here wasn't the crazy nut bag on the bus who killed this kid.... so how about you direct your anger at the person who is responsible before you unload your petty frustration out on people who have nothing to do with the situation?

Grow up.

You all need to stop this thread.........Please if you have nothing good to say..please shut the ****-up!!!!

And how about you get a thicker skin or stay the hell off the internet if you don't like people expressing their opinions?

If you're just going to come on here and bitch & moan about other people expressing their personal views, then you need to get a fk'n life princess. Maybe this sort of thing did happen to some of us.... maybe some of us escaped a similar situation.... you don't know, so how about you take a cup of shut the fk up that you are so willing to hand to us.... and simply STFU?

If you don't like the opinions.... then don't fuel them with your own ignorant crap. Giving attention to those you don't want to have attention is just counter productive.

And for you ass-holes who will open their big mouths about my opinion...come to alberta calgary and look up chris walsh,,,,,,,And me and you can take a bus ride.......Now go get laid or jerk-off....but stop using this poor familys loss to make your day!!!

Oh, so now you're going to try and justify your own actions of stabbing and beheading other people on a bus, because you can't deal with their opinions? You're already emotionally troubled by the situation apparently, but now you're going to be justified by repeating those actions on someone else because they're not nice?

You're one fk'd up person buddy. Not to mention, the online death threat..... and you complain about how evil we are for expressing our views freely, there you sit at your computer, actually threatening other people on the internet, because you think we're inconsidderate?

You best get your priorities straight you hypocrite as*hole.

And again . If you reply to this then every body will no what kind of **** you are...

Like I give a sh*t what other people think of me.... get your head out of your arse, get a nice wiff of fresh air, because I think you need it, you crazy lunatic.

Oh so you're gonna come on here with your wonderful one post count, being this post, try and threaten us all to speak nicly and censor our opinions to suit your sorry ass, and then bias yourself to "Good Christian People?"

Well you can take a good long suck on my former Christian arse and swallow a green fart you ignorant jack-wad.

Goto hell (That's a suggestion, deal with it princess)
