Andrew Scheer says getting Canadians to know his name is a ‘monumental challenge’

Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer admits he is at a significant disadvantage to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau when it comes to being recognized by Canadians, but says he's confident in making up ground ahead of the 2019 federal election.
"I knew that this challenge was going to be monumental when I ran for the leadership," Scheer told Global News when asked what he needs to do make sure more Canadians know his name.
Getting attention can be tough for any opposition leader. But Scheer’s challenge is compounded by being up against Trudeau, who enjoys name recognition around the globe.
“We have a celebrity prime minister that is the toast of the international elite and makes it on front pages of magazines because of the clothes he's wearing and things like that,” Scheer said. “The government gets default attention from the media. When they make announcements, it’s news because it’s government policy. We have to work a little bit harder.”
Even during a week where he was in the spotlight for several days at the Conservative party’s national convention in Halifax, many Canadians still have no idea who he is.
Anecdotally, Global News showed his picture to more than a dozen people this weekend. Only one person correctly identified him as Conservative party leader Andrew Scheer.
Other answers ranged from “I don’t know who this guy is” to “Looks familiar” to “Is he running for something?”
Just the top job in the country.

Scheer says he plans to tackle the recognition issue with a “very ambitious travel schedule” over the next year, leading up to the 2019 election.
“We're going to keep doing what we're doing. I believe it's paying off," Scheer said. "I think the proof is in a united and dynamic caucus that's fighting for the things that Canadians care about, and we're making real progress."
Senior Conservative MP Tony Clement also struck an optimistic tone.
“I think we've got some work to do between now and then, I grant you that, but it is coming along and it is according to a plan,” said Clement. “Our research is pretty clear on this. The more people get to know Andrew Scheer, the more they like him, which is a good sign.
“And I will make this guarantee to you — on election day, everyone who will be voting in that election will know that Andrew Scheer is running to be prime minister and that his candidates are on the ballot,” the former cabinet minister said.

Stephen Harper was prime minister of Canada from February 2006 until November 2015.

Enbridge’s Alberta Clipper (Line 67) pipeline expansion from Hardisty, Alberta, to Wisconsin was approved in 2006 and construction was completed on April 1, 2010.

Also completed in 2010 is Enbridge’s Southern Lights Pipeline from Manhattan, Illinois, up to Edmonton. That pipeline — covering a length of 2,556 km — transports diluent to Edmonton to aid in shipping bitumen through pipelines.

Then there’s the Mount Robson & Jasper Park Expansion, also known as the Anchor Loop Project. Construction on that Kinder Morgan project began in August 2007, adding a 158-km section of pipeline to the existing Trans Mountain pipeline system between Hinton and Hargreaves, B.C., near Mount Robson Provincial Park. It included twinning a part of the pipeline system across Jasper National Park, which won Kinder Morgan an award.

Also, a portion of TransCanada’s Keystone pipeline was approved in 2006 and was completed in 2010 taking crude from Alberta to Nebraska spanning a whopping 4,324 km.

The so-called XL portion of that pipeline has been controversial and long delayed but was approved by President Donald Trump.

Enbridge’s Northern Gateway pipeline was also approved under the Harper government, but Trudeau killed that pipeline once he became prime minister. Surely, he can’t blame that on his predecessor?

Trudeau plain wrong about Harper's pipeline legacy

Your argument is so ridiculously flawed, it's laughable.

What did Trudeau win?

The respect and admiration of....no one, except Mentalfloss.

Let's see you provide a link to your bullshite......

“According to his own government’s projections,” the study concludes, Trudeau “will increase per person federal debt by 5% from 2015 to 2019 — the largest increase of any prime minister whose time in office didn’t include a world war or economic recession.”

Justin Trudeau is no Paul Martin. Paul Martin was more fiscally conservative than some Conservatives even. Trudeau sure blew that one out of the water.

And thanks for the Green, Walter. :)

Stephen Harper is the most LIED ABOUT leader in Cdn history!

Consider:

The bottom line on Isis and Syria and Muslims and immigration generally-once you dig down to the opinions of REAL Cdns-as opposed to the thoughts of special interest groups such as immigration lawyers, poverty pimps/social workers and Lie-beral party swine who want to exploit immigrants in exchange for votes and power and be damned to the welfare of Canada is this::::

HARPER WAS RIGHT!!!! The ordinary Cdn wants to see an end to the suffering in the Middle East, wants to see a happy and prosperous end to the violence......AND ordinary Cdns want to see Muslims STAY in their home countries and not come to Canada!

Cdns are concerned that too many immigrants now come to Canada simply looking for access to OUR money. Special interest groups of various stripes already demand too much of our money for affordable housing, special training, welfare and support for a mob of kids often coming in numbers far in excess of what the parents can reasonably support.

Cdns especially fear that radical Muslims will alter life in Canada with their rabid religious demands. Muslims here in Ontari-owe have already approached the Lie-beral govt in hope of getting their Sharia Law imposed on Muslims in Ontari-owe. As Sharia Law is a harsh backward step for women’s rights, Lie-berals realized they had been handed a political time bomb and refused.....but if enough Muslims immigrate to Ontari-owe then Sharia Law WILL be voted in......and with enough votes Sharia Law will be imposed on ALL Cdn women-not just Muslims!

And Cdn government is currently spending something like 250-350 MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR to keep full time security eyes on approximately 250 suspected terrorists that our Lie-beral dominated immigration system has let into the country but who are deemed by security experts as too dangerous to be allowed loose unsupervised and yet the Lie-berals scream racist if Harper govt moves to deport any of these dangerous types.

Lie-beral minded hypocrites want to cosy up to potentially dangerous newcomers in exchange for votes and yet it will be Lie-berals who scream loudest and accuse the govt and cops of incompetence if a terror attack occurs here!

So, the Harper Conservative policy of helping to contain Isis by bombing and trying to create safe areas for Middle Eastern inhabitants is the right one and best for Canada. If Muslims are safe and happy in their current homes then they won’t want or NEED to come here and wont be out on the ocean in flimsy boats risking life and limb in desperation!

And they DON’T really want to come here-one has only to look at the experience of Mohammed Shafia who brought his 2 wives, 2 daughters and 1 son to Canada and ended up murdering the first wife and both daughters......Muslim women who get a look at the way Cdn women live often undergo a crisis of faith-they no longer want to strictly follow Muslim Sharia law and want to live with the freedoms enjoyed by Cdn women.....which prompts sometimes violent conflict within the family. Letting Mohammad Shafia into Canada is going to cost us about FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS PER YEAR in jail house expenses to keep Mohammed, his son and surviving wife locked up for the murders they committed! At $125,00.00 EACH per year for jail costs plus about 3 MILLION DOLLARS for the murder trial to lock them away, they are not a bargain! And we cannot afford any more such `deals`!

Nobody wants to see refugees suffer and we CAN help with that....sending winter coats to Syria as the boy with the nice hair has suggested is a fine start, but what they really need is peace and stability and steady jobs in THEIR homelands and defeating groups like Isis and deposing brutal Syrian dictator Assad who likes to lob poison gas at his enemies will help! Very few Cdns want more Muslims to come to Canada as its like mixing oil and water.....and not good for either one! Only Mulcair and Trudope support the policy of do nothing and let the economy and world messes sort themselves out!

What the liberals did with the debt more closely resembles a game of three card Monty than paying bills.see Cpp and EI theft.

Not like CBC or any of the far left rags are going to help him.

It's not like he does much to help himself.
OTOH, the best policy for the Conservatives is to say and do nothing
until the election, just let PM Sox virtue signal himself to oblivion.

I really have a hard time understanding why so many conservative on CC deny the amount Harper added to the national debt. It is a matter of public record.

No matter how you add it up, Harper’s fiscal record is a catastrophe

https://ipolitics.ca/2015/04/19/no-matter-how-you-add-it-up-harpers-fiscal-record-is-a-catastrophe/

You don't understand why a group of conbot sheep act like conbot sheep?

They've become victims of their own cowardice and converted from right wing, fiscal conservatives to nationalist Trumpanzees.

The truth is that deep, deep down, these idiots want to live in the 1950s again and it's old culture and social conservativism that's driving them.

They will disguise it with any other policy associated with the platform - nationalism, libertarianism or fiscal conservativism - but at the end of the day, it's about leave it to beaver and father knows best.

They're stuck in a cultural loop from the past and they can't let go - even while their own party of choice is becoming more liberal.

That's why you get guys like Walter who are perpetually angry.
