Re: Canada moving forward with Guaranteed Income

I don't think it takes a rocket scientist to figure out that wouldn't work too good! Who is going to supply the money?

It's called a print press.

Maybe I can quit my job, The dust, chemicals, and exposure to ladders won't be worth my pay soon.

On the other hand, Companies sitting on 900 billion $ Canadian, with nothing worth investing in. Is also bad.

Stimulating a economy when there aren't any opportunity to invest and see a decent return doesn't seem to work.

At least it keeps the debate arround here alive. Imagine how fast this place would die without him.

We lost cliffy. I don't think we can afford to lose MentalFloss.

Another reason it's not going to work well is marketplace pricing always rises to a level just above that which the poorest can afford

Canadians?

Who else?

Exactly! Don't you think that we Canadians who would supply the money already have enough on "our own plates" to manage our own families w/o having to fork over more money?

No?

Some of us know how to budget our money.

Re: Canada moving forward with Guaranteed Income

The general concept is that the government would ensure that all citizens have enough income to cover basic needs. One option for such a program is for the government to set a basic amount, such as $18,000 a year, and people whose income is less could receive payments to bring them up to that level.

The federal Liberals have committed to a poverty-reduction strategy; the cabinet member responsible, Minister for Families, Children and Social Development Jean-Yves Duclos, is a leading economist who has studied basic-income options for years, although the party has not explicitly committed to the idea.

A spokesperson for Mr. Duclos said the Minister is monitoring the debate.

The idea was tested briefly in Manitoba in the 1970s and is gaining momentum in Europe.

Ontario provided few details on its plans, other than to say it will work with communities, researchers and others this year on how to design the test.

Advocates of the concept say Ottawa should work with the province, given that the two levels of government have overlapping responsibilities when it comes to providing programs for low-income Canadians.

“We’re absolutely delighted that we’re seeing this forward movement on the idea of a basic-income guarantee,” said Ian Culbert, executive director of the Canadian Public Health Association, a non-profit advocacy group that has been campaigning in favour of a basic income. “It’s a perfect opportunity for the federal government to partner with Ontario to see how they could work together and provide that as a model for other jurisdictions.”

Ottawa should work with Ontario on guaranteed-income strategy: advocates - The Globe and Mail
Last time I looked we still had a basic income called welfare. If you can't survive on that get a job. The rest of us are tired of having to support our families, worthless politicians and everyone that is too lazy to work.

Actually, JLM I think the idea is well worth exploring. I posted an article in another thread on this subject - I think it was the one about the Ontario Liberal government looking into GI. If you are interested, it is a pretty good article about a city in Manitoba that tried it and had some success.

Apparently there are a couple of ideas but the one I like would see the elimination of Welfare, OAS, GAIN, and any other similar programs. Everyone would get a guaranteed amount of money - even the wealthy though that could be worked around with a higher tax bracket for the rich. Think of the money saved by eliminating all the bureaucracies that provide the above services - by both levels of government.

There is so much money in circulation, as is anyways, that I think it could work.

Who is going to fire all the good union members on the government payroll to enforce this idea ?

This is an utterly stupid idea for a country the size of Canada. How do you determine a minimum income to cover basic needs when the costs of those needs vary substantially from city to city, region to region and province to province?
For example, in Ontario the average rent on a two bedroom apt. in a city ranges anywhere from $815/mo to $1269/mo. Food and gas costs more in places like North Bay and Thunder Bay than it does in Southern Ontario. Utility rates differ from place to place, transit rates differ from place to place. And that's just one province.

A guaranteed income is going to take helluva lot more forethought and planning than the shiny pony used on his Syrian refugee plan.
