The Fatal Costs of Kinder Morgan

Exporting oil — like exporting fentanyl — is a death sentence for some.

When we hear about smog at all, it’s reported as a problem in some distant developing nation’s capital, like Beijing or New Delhi. By comparison, Vancouver has no problems.
But as good as we think our air is, it’s still killing 21,000 Canadians a year — about two every hour, day in and day out.
Now Kinder Morgan has blinked about its Trans Mountain expansion, and both Ottawa and Edmonton have risen in wrath to reprove British Columbia and its government. The Globe and Mail in an editorial has blamed B.C. for “an economic and constitutional disaster,” topped off with a charge of “naked hypocrisy” as John Horgan’s NDP government is worried about the environmental hazards to Burrard Inlet from shipping Alberta’s dilbit to Asia, while also promoting LNG shipments to the same markets.
The hypocrisy charge is fair enough, especially in the light of air pollution deaths. Even if not a crumb of dilbit is ever spilled anywhere between Burnaby and Shanghai or Yokohama, when it’s converted into fuel and burned it will poison the air. The same is true of LNG, and even truer of the coal we’ve been happily shipping out of Roberts Bank since 1970.

Fatal, eh? May I suggest that you forego the suffering and jump off a cliff? No? I thought not.

If B.C. doesn't back down, Canada should cut their funds, says Kenney
Mia Rabson, The Canadian Press

OTTAWA -- Pressure is mounting on the federal government to use money or the Constitution to back up its claims that the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion project will be built, no matter what.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's cabinet is in Ottawa today for an emergency meeting following news that Kinder Morgan is suspending all non-essential spending on the pipeline until it and its investors feel secure the project won't be derailed by strong opposition from the British Columbia government.

Jason Kenney, leader of Alberta's United Conservative party, said Tuesday that since Trudeau had no qualms withholding more than $60 million from Saskatchewan for not joining the Liberal carbon tax plan, he should follow suit by withholding transfers to B.C. for blocking a pipeline over which it has no jurisdiction.

Kenney said on Twitter that the B.C. government started a "constitutional crisis" and thus far Ottawa hasn't hit back at them with anything.

"Federal transfers to BC's treasury accounted for $8.9b this fiscal year, or almost 17% of BC's budget," he said. "Even a small financial backlash from Ottawa could imperil the province's balanced budget."

Under the Pan Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change, the federal government provided $2 billion in per capita funding for climate change projects but it was available only to provinces that signed onto the framework. Saskatchewan, the only province that didn't sign on, won't get $62 million in guaranteed funding under the program, although it can apply for specific project-based funding along with other provinces and municipal governments.

Notley is looking out for the best interests on BC by stopping the export of oil and all it's byproducts in the name of safety of your residents.

Hopefully you don't need any emergency airlifts or ambulances, but do rest in the knowledge that a a few guys on the stretcher brigade will have your back

It's the norm to Left Coast. Some people use Salish Territory on their addresses and rely on the postal code.

So what's your argument here? Should we ban all resource exports because they are all bad? Or just Oil because it is just as bad but not a resource from B.C.? Oops forgot about the new big Oil field that is being developed in Northern B.C. :)

New B.C. oil discovery takes province's crude output to a nine-year high

AB wants to invest in TMPL with support of Conservatives.

It makes me go ah ha!

When SK borrowed $600M at dirt cheap interest rates "to invest" as announced in yesterday's budget, it's clear for what.

Why not make it another 150km longer to tie into SK?

That ups the game immensely.

It also makes me wonder if the grain sitting on the Prairies and the 50 empty ships sitting in English Bay causing 100s of millions of Port fee income sitting in hiatus for BC ports is retaliation.

Now I'm not so mad about not getting paid for most of last year's crop.

One of the big reasons that the Feds paid so much attention to the AB gvt proposing a direct investment is that the the revenues, dividend, profits, etc that go to gvt pay no income taxes.

I can't say if the Feds elected to consider investing because of lost income tax (provincial gvt exempt) or because they thought that this would solve the BC problem and they get their slice as well
