I never thought I'd ever agree with RCS. But, he's right. You can keep the monarchy!
Mind you, as an anachronistic and fundamentally anti-democratic relic of the British caste system, it is one of the least annoying.

And it is because of attitudes like that that we have separatists. What ever happened to love thy neighbour as thyself?
Oh, and I am a first generation Canadian of British decent. I think the monarchy has long outlived it's usefulness (if it was ever useful.)
Separatists purpose is to destroy the Country that my family and I have spent over 400 years helping to build. They can kiss my ass.
Gerry is the typical example of the shallow minded not capable of grasping the nuances and subtleties that are involved in the question of separatism vs. federalism. As in pretty much everything, it is the hard liners that often end up sabotaging any attempt at a creative compromise.
That probably makes you a lesser Canadian in Gerry's eye. Typical of the monarchist mindset that views some people as being inferior to others.

Nothing lasts forever, fortunately. Countries are constantly changing. Canada included. It'll be nice when we finally get rid of that ancient and useless institution. Hell, even if it served a purpose Id want to get rid of it. No family or person deserves to hold such a position just because of who they happened to be born to.

Personally, I think the Monarchy is important. I think the republicans take the wrong view: they see the Monarchy as representative of centuries of oppression. I see the constitutional Monarchy as a symbol of our victory over repression, especially on occasions such as the Speech from the Throne, when the elected gov't has its hand up the Monarch's arse, actually moving her lips.....a puppet to democracy.
That in itself is worth keeping
The only reason why some are against it is,why do we have to pay when they come here to visit,shouldn't they pay for their travel/time spent here,like anyone on vacation?
What it costs to put Lizzy up for a few days is peanuts compared to the business she generates. Just the extra gas sold to people driving miles to see her more than covers her room and the grub she eats. Security costs are mainly on paper only, those guys are already being paid!
Why replace it with anything? The GG is effectively the head of state. Just keep it that position. Maybe change the name and the way the person is chosen for the job, but there really is no need to have a monarch. Particularly one thats 3000 miles away. As for how we do it, there's only one way and thats to change the constitution. I know, its a messy process and its not going to happen anytime soon. Id imagine it wont happen for decades but Im hoping its in my lifetime. Monarchy aside there are plenty of other things in the constitution that need to be fixed.
I dont think we really need a symbol of victory over repression anymore. If we're just keeping the monarchy around to turn them into puppets to humiliate them then the institution really is serving no purpose to anyone, including those holding the job of monarch.
We pay a good portion of the bill when any leader of another country comes here. Given what they did here when Obama came I imagine that cost a fortune.
Using the threat of separation is in no way conducive to any "compromise". Take it off the table and then let's see what can be done. Otherwise, as long as the threat of separation is on the table, you can kiss my ass for anything.
About seperation i've heard that before quebec ever do it,apparently provinces like Alberta could actually do it.
