I don't need any ID to cash a cheque.
He shouldn't be using his SIN to cash his cheques in any event. He should be using government picture ID such as a drivers license. It's extremely dangerous to put your SIN "out there" and even Canada Revenue will tell you that there are very few situations where you will need a SIN: for your employer and to your bank to open an account/get a loan. There may be one more (but I can't think of any). So he should do fine until the gov't re-issues his SIN. Don't know what the hassle is all about.

but I believe if one honest hard working Canadian's financial activities are compromised then it's up to our illustrious Gov't. to do something to fix the problems forthwith!![]()
I happen to agree with that, but our gov't doesn't even believe that paying civil servants is a priority. In my opinion, many people involved in the Phoenix disaster (management and deputy ministers) should have been fired, but the gov't does not care.
That would be a hard one to convict him on, if the cheque has his name on it.
