Is it necessary for cops to use lethal force against a guy with a knife?

Sure seems like a quick and over-reaction but...

Looks like kid moves his right hand down to his waist as he moved towards the doorway just before the shots. Now, if the cops saw a gun or the kid implied he also had one, we won't know for 30 days after the SIU investigation is complete. No further comments from Blair.

Sammy Yatim: Police Chief Blair to comment on streetcar shooting | Toronto Star

That still doesn't excuse the cops from not doing the fast draw routine and shooting the knife out of his hand.

ya know, if these clowns can't disable a man with one round at point blank range they shouldn't be allowed to play with firearms. That was just insane. Take that (those) fu<ker's badge(s) and throw him (them) in the slammer. Also TTC should send the police department the bill for the repairs to the wanton damage done to their vehicle.

If the kid had his knee cap shot out, I'm sure that would have interrupted his concentration!

Now we are seeing some sense!

Funny. There were three shots, a quite long pause, and six more shots. Did the first three shots miss? Another thing. Why was the siren going for the whole time?

Yeah, agreed, and taser guy showed-up late. That should have been the first go but again, we don't know why the buckaroo fired and then fired again.

I dunno Man,. this seems a little iffy.

NINE shots?? REALLY????? THEN they taser him??

And he was inside the bus, alone I think. Good Lord, talk about isolated and secured.........with a number of cops around him.

And he didn't even appear to be at the door.

Now, all that said, in training you are taught that any man with an edged weapon with 25 feet is extremely dangerous, and lethal force is an option. A fit man can cover 25 in two seconds.

I think the cop was trigger happy.

But I also think the shooting will come down as justified.

BALONEY.

First of all, "disabling" a man requires a level of shooting skill not exactly common among police, nor the general public

Secondly, that level of skill is negated by the stress of an actual confrontation, and the knowledge you are shooting at a MAN.

Third....the target is moving.

Fourth, the police are TRAINED to shoot centre mass, NEVER anything else......because

Fifth, "disabling" shots, even if successful, over-penetrate and continue on their way to God-knows where.

All that said, I think the shooting was unnecessary, and the cop somewhat trigger happy, and unskilled. Notice (I believe) only one cop fired. Unusual, to say the least

The inquiry will be interesting.

law enforcement is fearful of someone holding a stapler so a knife most certainly will have their guns firing .its just amazing that they dont shoot each another

Was he holding people on the bus?

From what I saw, the bus was empty, and he was not moving toward anyone. That video doesn't bode well for the officers involved.
From what I saw as well. No reports of anyone else on the bus. They had a taser as we have seen it used. He was some distance from the Officer(s).
Chief Blair originally stated he would make no comment due to the SIU investigation. He has changed his mind.

The only reason, justifiable reason, for lethal force that I can possibly conceive of is if he made a sudden movement (reached into his pocket, under his jacket, etc). But even under those circumstances, the number of shots fired seems really excessive. And it does seem like there is just the one officer firing? Could be wrong about that, but that's what it seems like.

You have it right, to me it seemed totally unnecessary. There was no one on the bus in danger, there's only two exits he can escape from.
