I saw that online this afternoon about NYC basically shutting down. It is rather unbelievable.

Hopefully this in one of those times where they make a big deal out of an impending doom of a storm and turns out to be not as bad as expected. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

To us here on the east coast, it's just another hurricane. Ho hum, make sure to stock up at the liquor store, in case the power goes out.

But if the forecasts are right, and NYC might get 8 inches of rain, I can see why they're worried: that's one **** of a lot of rain for a city of concrete and asphalt - no where for the water to go, except the subways.

I am hoping for the same results, SLM but am really glad to see that they are preparing for the very worst and letting people know well ahead of time. The last thing the poor beleaguered American people need is something this massive and costly let alone the possibility of very substantial and widespread destruction. Gaia help them.

CNN was reporting that New York could expect to see a period of heavy rain lasting for at least 21 hours - that's a deluge.

We've had about 25 storms here in Regina so far this summer. Each one of them is like a 30min hurricane but with hail.

The tides are at their highest for the month right now too. Could make for some very nasty storm surge.

Yep. A hurricane in the Bay of Fundy on a perigean tide can wreak an awful lot of havoc. The dykes along the Bay of Fundy would be overwhelmed. There was a storm that tracked up the Bay of Fundy in the latter half of the 1800's that did just that. It would be far worse today...we're not even close to the level of preparedness that Louisiana had, which everyone saw wasn't enough.

I noticed the usual unimaginative network idiots are out in their raincoats while the storm does its best to blow them away. Can't any of them find any other imagery to get across the point that a hurricane is very powerful?

I was caught in a hurricane cat. 3 in Cuba a couple of years ago and realized that the drama that we see from reporters on TV is drama. It wasn't all that bad as long as we were in a safe building or outside but out of the wind. The wind was strong, the rain was coming in sideways, but the Cubans were well prepared for hurricanes and had secured everything that could create a hazard. Flooding and projectiles are the danger, not really the wind and rain. In fact, my son would open his rain coat and let the wind blow him barefoot across the tiles in front of the beach hotel ... all good fun. We did have water in our hotel room from the rain coming in through the cracks in the patio door, so I was up through the night mopping with towels. Our flight was delayed by a couple of days and then it was over, the beach was carved out a bit from the waves but nothing too serious.

Peak storm surge + High Tide = Greatest Flooding. Just south of Atlantic City through New York to just past Bridgeport Connecticut will be the bull's Eye for maximum flooding.

8-10 foot estimated storm surge will flood low lying areas (effectively returning land to the sea for a few hours) Manhattan isn't very high above sea level....
Hurricane IRENE Storm Surge Probabilities

....the National Hurricane Center has rated Irene at 5.0 on a 6.0-point scale for its potential to create damaging storm surge and waves. These are values seen more typically in Category 4 hurricanes, meaning Irene is extremely dangerous.
Hurricane Irene New York, New Jersey, Connecticut Forecast: What to Expect for Landfall - Metropolis - WSJ

In other words it may have winds speeds of a Cat 1, but its going to have a punch of a Cat 4 as far as rain and flooding on NYC.

This will be a once in a hundred year storm for a huge area and millions of people based on flooding...

Storms fascinate me me ... the incredible power of nature that we rarely see is mindboggling.

Well it all looks like (literally) a dry fart in a windstorm-some flooding and that's about it.

Apologies to those who are always titillated by anything that happens in the USA-better luck getting your fix somewhere else.
