I'm inclined to think the vote would have been near unanimous had in not been for party loyalty and a vote against Harper for the sake of a vote against Harper
There is no genocide. ISIS is not at the gates of our cities.

True not our cities. True that for the 1st time Muslims are doing something. True that Turkey is prepared to take no action as this weakens the Kurds in Syria.

Mostly just rival Muslim factions killing each other. Genocide is the systematic extermination of a certain race or national group. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot that is systematic that is going on with the Islamic State. They are not being that discriminate in who they kill.
The short term cause of this is the collpase of Iraq and and the various "Arab Revolutions" that devolved in Islamism. The medium term cause is the careless division of that region at the end of region by European potentates afrter WWI. The long-term cause is the Sunni/Shi'a schism when Mohammed's son-in-law was killed in the 7th century.
Unfortuantely, most redneck types have a memory that lasts about four months and anything before that is just a haze. You guys are always going on about how you want all the Muslims dead, and here the Muslims are happily slaughtering each other, and you feel the overwhelming need to go stick our soldiers in the middle. Go figger.
If there is genocide, if there is WMD against civilians or if Article 5 is invoked, I support intervention with clear and realistic objectives. Otherwise, arm the Kurds, maintain alliance with Turkey and Israel, offer humanitarian aid. Putin is more of a threat to western interests.
