at the time the Carter detente effort towards NK was treated as appeasement by the GOP, because their self-appointed task is to oppose anything that comes from the "other side".

It is literally their only policy - just look at the Ryan congress and Obama

This is how we arrived at president Trump.

Very TRUMPIAN.........that is how his hero talks and treats others.

********

Apparently Harper is meeting with Bolton when he visits Washington. A trip planned with no communication with the PMO interesting

Maybe he'll remind Bolton that there's an election here next year and the Conservatives are in the lead, and what the US is doing is causing people to rally around Trudeau. Do you really want that, he might ask? Would you not prefer a Conservative in power in Canada than Mr. Progressive Selfy? Is that not in your interests? And hey, 99% of trade is already tariff free due to NAFTA.

Oh, and by the way, if you wanted to calm things down and spike Trudeau at the same time why not announce that I was so convincing that you're dropping steel and aluminum tariffs.

Technically that is right. He has no authority either..........so again WHAT is his motive??
I didn't realize you needed authority to be a guest of the White House. I mean if that's your big stink, then what the f*ck was Obama's lunch date with Trudeau all about?

Hmm. Interesting. Could have possibilities ;-)

Boy, during normal times you'd think "Great! A former PM is going the Washington to help out!"

In these dark days, it's as if he's sneaking away to do dirty deals with a hostile foreign power.

Not good.
indeed, What is in it for Harper? IF he is trying to represent CDA.......how is that appropriate when the PMO didn't know?? What is his REAL motive?? And what did he achieve??

IF it is a "social" visit......why not just say so??

At the very least the optics are not all that great. They imply a rift as opposed a unity in CDA.......and we are very aware of Trumpian divide and conquer mentality / tactics. He looks for weaknesses so he can use them to his advantage. ( similar to Putin) and / or play one against the other.

Uh, what 'dirty deal' do you imagine he could do with the US? He might be able to persuade them to do something but he can't do anything about Canada's responses or behavior.

I don't imagine that he's doing anything shady at all but the current POTUS is so malignant, the association makes Harper look shady.

Harper's probably trying to take advantage of the current trade wars for his own personal gain. The guy met with Larry Kudlow, of all people. Obvious agenda is obvious.

He spent his entire time in office having fantasies about making Canada become the 51st state... happily gobbling up whatever crumbs the US tossed from their table. He's a wannabe American crony capitalist. Always has been, always will be.

But whatever he's up to, it won't be to the benefit of Canada or its denizens with regards to the ongoing tariff war and NAFTA negotiations.
