Liberal MP sponsored petition calling for Israeli divestment: Report

A Liberal MP is sponsoring petitions that call for the Canada Pension Plan to pull all investments from Israel as well as limit background checks of displaced Palestinians applying to leave Gaza.

According to Blacklock’s Reporter, Jenica Atwin, the Liberal MP for Fredericton, is also sponsoring a petition that would introduce Arab history into public schools.

The MP didn’t reply to questions from Blacklock’s Reporter.

“We, the undersigned … call upon the House of Commons in Parliament assembled to demand CPPIB (Canada Pension Plan Investment Board) divest from Israel and complicit companies to ensure compliance with the Rome Statute, the Canadian Crimes Against Humanity and War Crimes Act,” one petition says.

Another petition calls on the House of Commons to re-evaluate the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada program for Gaza that would “remove the arbitrary limit of 5,000 permits,” “reduce applicants’ personal detail requirements, including granular health information, social media accounts, and other onerous documentation,” and “end the policy of sending applicants’ names for approval to the Israeli government.

“Words might appear insignificant at a time when we are collectively facing horror,” Atwin said two weeks after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

“Words can hurt, but they can also heal. They can change how we perceive the world. We need to see the humanity in one another.”

A third petition calls for support to the provinces to add the Nakba — catastrophe in Arabic — to public school curricula and how it affected the human rights of Palestinians following the founding of Israel in 1948.

“Anti-Palestinian racism is on the rise and is often ignored,” the petition says. “Distinct from Islamophobia, anti-Palestinian racism silences and dehumanizes Palestinians, thereby upholding the settler-colonial narrative.”

According to the Department of Immigration, 283 of a total 3,008 Gazans to date have been approved to enter Canada.

Minister delays appointment of new human-rights commissioner after independent review

OTTAWA — After an independent review, Justice Minister Arif Virani announced Wednesday that Birju Dattani has agreed not to begin his appointment as chief commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission on Thursday as planned.

Virani launched the investigation after Canadian Jewish organizations raised concerns about allegations surrounding Dattani’s past activities.

Dattani, the first Muslim and racialized person to be appointed to the role, has previously denied allegations that he made anti-Israel statements, including what Conservatives characterize as a “justification of terrorism.”

“While I carefully consider this matter, Mr. Dattani has agreed to take leave at this time and will not begin work at the CHRC on Aug. 8, 2024,” Virani said in a statement Wednesday evening.

“I will have more to say in the coming days.”

Dattani did not immediately respond to a request for comment. His lawyer has previously said her client would challenge an attempt to have him removed.

The concerns stem from now-deleted posts Dattani made online under a different name while he was a graduate student in London almost a decade ago, and a panel appearance he made around the same time alongside a member of the Hizb ut-Tahrir, an Islamic fundamentalist group.

Dattani has acknowledged that in 2014, he shared an article titled “Palestinians are Warsaw ghetto prisoners of today.” He previously told both CBC News and the Globe and Mail he did not agree with the piece’s argument.

He has rejected suggestions that he shared articles comparing Israel to Nazi Germany, as one 2015 article stated he did. The post has since been deleted.

Virani said his top priority is maintaining confidence in the Canadian Human Rights Commission.

Conservative deputy leader Melissa Lantsman called on the Liberals to fire Dattani and open public hearings into his appointment.

“Nothing about this review is independent or transparent as the whole process has been set up by the same Liberals who have spent weeks trying to cover up the truth about this appointment,” she said in a statement Wednesday evening.

“This meaningless half-measure is not enough.”

The review was conducted by Toronto law firm Filion Wakely Thorup Angeletti LLP. Virani thanked the firm Wednesday for completing the work on such a tight timeline.

Is Dattani still getting paid as he is not beginning his appointment as chief commissioner of the Canadian Human Rights Commission? Like a paid leave of absence for a position he never started? Anyway…
…or the IRGC did it, with Israel as the scapegoat?

Videos seen by CNN of the aftermath of the strike show a large number of bodies strewn on the ground. Witnesses said there was no advance warning of the attack.

As always, “All of these people who were targeted were civilians, unarmed children, the elderly, men and women,” said Fares Afana, director of ambulance and emergency in northern Gaza.

Israeli propaganda piece yet to be released…oh wait…this just in…The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed to CNN that it hit the compound, saying its air force “precisely struck Hamas terrorists operating within a Hamas command and control center embedded” in the building.

It’s a war. Both sides are shoveling out propaganda for their own reasons and benefits, as quick as they can.

Incoming human rights commission chair to 'take leave': Justice Minister
Canadian Jewish groups had raised concerns after his appointment

Under fire for anti-Israel posts online, the incoming head of the Canadian Human Rights Commission (CHRC) will not be assuming his new role today.

Set to begin his new job on Thursday, Birju Dattani will instead “take leave,” Justice Minister Arif Virani said in a statement Wednesday evening.

“While I carefully consider this matter, Mr. Dattani has agreed to take leave at this time and will not begin work at the CHRC on August 8, 2024,” the statement from Virani’s office said.

“I will have more to say in the coming days.”

An independent review by a Bay St. law firm was launched shortly before the allegations came to light earlier this summer.

Following Dattani’s appointment in June, Canadian Jewish groups raised concerns over alleged connections to terror organizations and previous anti-Semitic remarks made online.

On Thursday, B’nai Brith Canada spokesperson Marty York said transparency is essential in government decision making.

“We are disappointed that the Government failed to publish its report as promised today, but we remain hopeful that the right decision on Mr. Dattani will be made by Minister Virani,” he said.

Conservative Deputy Leader Melissa Lantsman tells the Toronto Sun that simply putting Dattani on leave isn’t enough.

“Nothing about this review is independent or transparent, as the whole process has been set up by the same Liberals who have spent weeks trying to cover up the truth about this appointment,” she said.

“”This meaningless half-measure is not enough. Justin Trudeau must immediately fire his new human rights commissioner and start open and public hearings into this debacle.”

Yeah. A democracy not a caliphate.
It is a democracy but Erdogan is kind of a tyrant & has tried previously to extend his Presidency but failed. There are Islamic forces that would like to see him "go away" so it's a democracy if they can keep it, much like Canada & the U.S. - IF WE CAN KEEP IT. We could be on the verge of losing it. Just sayin...
