I heard that as of yesterday food and water was available to everyone, they stand on long lines, but everyone should be getting fed. The main problems now seem to be with medical supplies and the need for more doctors.

JBeee as usual is wrong, there are planes loads of Haitians coming into South Florida every day. The U.S. is giving them 18 month non resident status so they can go get jobs, after the 18 months they may able to apply for citizenship if they want or renew their non resident cards.
Is there any preferences given? ie Trades people vs ditch-diggers

Okay, does that mean all the elite have already arrived? Wasn't there a few warships stopping people from leaving the island in small boats (not that it would be a good idea in the first place). Is every cargo flight coming back (100/day from just one base) full of refugees. Are the survivors of Katrina going to help with their arrival into a strange, strange land? All those poisonous shacks have been destroyed reight??

Yup. Help for Pakistan came from Afghanistan in the form of Chinooks until USAID took over. Did they send Special Forces those times too?

Are you saying the news isn't sometime spun just a tad to make things look/sound good to the cameras? Like that turkey holding a fake turkey in Iraq.

This article says it only applied to Haitians who are already on US soil.
:Celhomme was among New York-area Haitians who came to the federal briefing on the new immigration program. They learned that Haitians who were here when the earthquake struck will be able to receive temporary protected status (TPS), even if they are in the U.S. illegally. New York Citizenship Immigration Service district director Andrea Quarantillo explained:

"Haitian nationals will be able to remain in the U.S. legally, be able to obtain authorization to work legally in the United States, be eligible to obtain permission to travel outside the United States, and return to their TPS status," she said.

Being able to travel home to help without fear of being denied re-entry to the U.S. is key."

Do not take what I wrote out of context and twist it - I do not care if the are Special Forces, I do not care if they are Green Berets, I do not care if they are Navy Seals - A soldier is a soldier - Plan and freaking simple. Do not play the false guilt trip on me - From you i find that insulting as I do expect better.

Haitians already in the U.S. illegally will be given temporary legal status and a chance to work for approx. 18 months. What happens after that is up to them, but they will be eligible for citizenship after that time. The Haitians being flown out are those who hold dual citizenship, orphans and those needing advanced medical care. The Haitian goverment is pretty much abandoning Port-Au-Prince for the moment and moving people to other parts of the country.

The state of Florida will be sending hundreds of prefabricated buildings to Haiti. They are packed up and ready to go.

That was depressing. It was nice reading the article about the sister and brother that were rescued after being trapped in the rubble for 8 days, and then I felt like I got punched in the gut when I saw the picture of that girl shot for looting.

Looting may be wrong, but she certainly did not deserve to be shot for a few pictures. The devastation is so complete over there, that those few pictures being taken would not have hurt anyone in the long run. At worst, they could have just confiscated the pictures away from her.

I don't know. The punishment certainly did not fit the crime and now a family is without their daughter.:(

OK everybody, it's pension day and a lot of us are living pretty high on the hog considering- scrape up $10 or $20 for World Vision or the Red Cross, so the help can continue.

Are they any different than the ones sent to New Orleans by FEMA. Those shelters were giving off formaldehyde or something similar. We often shuffle off stuff we have deemed 'unhealthy' to the 3rd world (at retail prices).

There's one thing we can count on for sure- when someone does something benevolent, there will be someone who'll dredge up a downside to it.

I doubt if the folks who need shelter will worry about a smell.

Yeah, I'm sure that the people of Haiti would rather sleep on the ground, than to have a shelter which needs to have the windows opened once in a while in order to meet some California paranoid neurotic's idea of what constitutes acceptable.

But hey, as long as you can find something to criticize, carry on.
