Illinois Supreme Court Rules Gun, Ammo Tax Unconstitutional

The Illinois Supreme Court has ruled that Cook County's two taxes on guns and ammunition are in violation of the state's Constitution, writing in 6-0 decision that the taxes affect citizens' Second Amendment rights to possess firearms for self-defense.

"While the taxes do not directly burden a law-abiding citizen’s right to use a firearm for self-defense, they do directly burden a law-abiding citizen’s right to acquire a firearm and the necessary ammunition for self-defense," Supreme Court Justice Mary Jane Theis wrote in the 14-page opinion, reports NTD. .....More

Last Wednesday, Toronto Police shot and killed a 70-year-old man. You likely haven’t heard a thing about it.

Part of the reason for that may be that the shooting happened nearly 150 kilometres away on a rural road outside of Port Dover.

Rodger Kotanko was shot once in the neck and three times in the chest. He was later pronounced dead at hospital.

They describe police as executing the search warrant without notice, kicking in the door to Kotanko’s workshop, and opening fire right away.

Kotanko was a renowned gunsmith with clients from across the country, even the United States and Europe. He also looked after guns for members of the local OPP detachment.

In the meantime, locals have a message to Toronto Police: Keep your cops and your crime in the city, and don’t come knocking in Norfolk County anytime soon.

Are there going to be any charges? Is there at least an investigation as to how this happened? WOW

I only know what’s in the link above. Yes there’s going to be an internal investigation from what I’ve read, and it’s super closed mouth.

The highlights are:
1) the Toronto Police preformed a no notice warrant ‘cuz the guy had a licence for guns
2) this happened 150kms from Toronto in Port Dover
3) the Toronto Police didn’t inform the local police force that this was happening
4) the 70yr old guy was a gunsmith. He was in his shop with a customer when the police came through the door unannounced & shot him 4 times. Once in the neck & three times in the chest. This guy was the gunsmith for the local members of the OPP, who also where not informed this ‘search’ was happening…
5) if this 70yr old, working in his gunsmith shop, as a gunsmith, with a customer present, had a firearm, or part of a firearm, in his proximity, would that have been out of place or threatening under the circumstances?

I only quoted part of the story at the link. It’s worth a read through the link itself.

FIRE STARTED BY BULLETS … IN TOASTER OVEN
Bullets and toaster ovens don’t mix.
In this case, the combination made for a fire hazard.
Firefighters in Greenwood, S.C., said they think a fire started inside an assisted-living facility on Nov. 28 as a result of bullets inside a toaster oven, WYFF reported.

That night, emergency personnel were called to Morningside Assisted Living after reports of gunshots and a fire alarm. Cops said a small fire had started inside the room of one of the residents where a person was found unconscious.
The person was taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. According to police, the fire started after the unnamed resident had fired several rounds of ammunition at the toaster oven, which caused the bullets to discharge.
Firefighters put out the flames quickly and no other injuries were reported.

How did the Toronto police get a search warrant for a place outside their jurisdiction?

“Guess who came in to receive his Concealed Handgun Permit today?” Colorado’s El Paso County Sheriff’s Office tweeted Friday, followed by a Santa Claus emoji.

The employee was filling out paperwork for Old Saint Nick to carry a firearm, the sheriff’s office inferred.

The tweet, which was meant to advertise concealed handgun permits, was swiftly met with outrage and condemnation. Three hours later, the department in Colorado Springs apologized. The original post has been commented on or shared more than 5,000 times.

“EPSO intended to highlight our staff in the Concealed Handgun Permit Office, not to be insensitive,” the sheriff’s office tweeted. “Santa correlates to the month of December and we thought he would help to recognize our hard working staff.”

Critics on Twitter pointed out that the post came just three days after the country’s latest deadly school shooting. Police in Michigan said 15-year-old Ethan Crumbley opened fire at an Oxford high school on Tuesday, killing four classmates and injuring seven others. He was charged as an adult on Wednesday with first-degree murder and terrorism. He pleaded not guilty.

Crumbley’s father purchased the 9mm pistol on Nov. 26, just days before the shooting, according to authorities. Both of Crumbley’s parents now face charges of involuntary manslaughter. They pleaded not guilty.

The day after the sheriff’s department post about Santa, Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., was lambasted for a his own gun-themed Christmas post. He shared a family portrait on Twitter on Saturday showing each family member holding a long gun and a caption that read: “Merry Christmas! ps. Santa, please bring ammo.” Democratic and Republican politicians criticized Massie, calling the post insensitive in the wake of the Oxford High School shooting.

El Paso County’s Colorado Springs was the site of a mass shooting seven months ago, when police said 28-year-old Teodoro Macias walked into a birthday party and began firing. He killed six people before turning the gun on himself. Over the past three decades, Colorado has been disproportionately plagued by gun violence, with at least eight mass shootings, The Washington Post found.

The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office’s tweet featuring Santa encouraged residents to learn more about concealed handgun permits.

“Did you know the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office has issued 49,750 Concealed Handgun Permits with another 2,560 awaiting to be issued?” the Friday tweet said.

Thousands responded, including one man who noted he was attending a ceremony in honor of last week’s school shooting victims.

“I’m sitting here in downtown Oxford, MI, waiting for the candlelight vigil to start to pay tribute to 4 students who were murdered by a handgun smuggled into the school,” he tweeted. “But by all means, tell kids Santa carries a concealed weapon.”

Many agreed that the Santa imagery was what they found most inappropriate about the tweet.

“I don’t think the idea of Santa needing a handgun is as uplifting as you think it is,” another person tweeted.

“What is your message to children here?” another added. “Santa has a legally concealed weapon? For protection against elves, reindeer, children who take a peek on Xmas eve? There is enough anxiety among children already.”

One woman, who said she is a resident of the county, said she was “embarrassed and mortified” by the tweet.

“Just delete this,” she wrote.

WASHINGTON — A U.S. congressman on Saturday posted a Christmas picture of himself and what appeared to be his family, smiling and posing with an assortment of guns, just days after four teenagers were killed in a shooting at a Michigan high school.

“Merry Christmas! ps. Santa, please bring ammo,” U.S. Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky wrote on Twitter.

Ethan Crumbley, 15, is accused of carrying out the deadliest U.S. school shooting this year, the latest in a decades-long series of mass shootings at U.S. schools. His parents were arrested on Saturday in connection with last Tuesday’s slayings.

Massie, who represents a solidly Republican district, posted the picture of himself and six others holding firearms resembling an M60 machine gun, AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and a Thompson submachine gun.

Some semi-automatic weapons are made to look nearly identical to fully automatic weapons like machine guns. Under U.S. law, weapons like machine guns are restricted to the military, law enforcement and civilians who have obtained special licenses for weapons made before May 1986.

Jonathan van Norman, a campaign manager for Massie, did not immediately reply to a request for comment via Twitter.

Democratic U.S. Representative John Yarmuth, who chairs the U.S. House of Representatives Budget Committee, condemned his fellow Kentuckian’s post.

“I’m old enough to remember Republicans screaming that it was insensitive to try to protect people from gun violence after a tragedy,” Yarmuth wrote on Twitter, apparently referring to calls for gun control laws.

“I promise not everyone in Kentucky is an insensitive asshole,” he added. The shooting in Oxford, Michigan – in which four teenagers were killed and a teacher and six other students were wounded – was the latest in a string of sometimes-deadlier incidents that have prompted fierce debates over school safety, gun control and gun rights.

But the police force isn't. They have no legal authority outside city limits.
I really don’t know how this works. I do see the city of Regina police force out on the highways enforcing traffic laws, but only when SGI (Saskatchewan government insurance, & the ONLY auto insurer in this province) decides and sponsors an enforcement blitz.

When that happens if somebody happens to get a $200 fine for something, then SGI tax on a matching $200 surcharge for the next time they renew their drivers license.

Then, here in Regina which is the home of the RCMP I have not seen the RCMP pull over anybody in the city of Regina since 1974 or 1975 (when there was a city police strike, and then since then nothing).

With the proviso that I DO NOT know how it works in Canada, down here lots of police forces are "cross-deputized" with each other.

The warrent gave them the right to enter the premisis. Whether they had the right to shoot anybody is another matter. And I also think it is generally considered impolite to not bring along someone from the actual jurisdiction even if it was fully legal without (to enter premises).
