I'm willing to accept claims because of two things. First, I have no way of disproving them, and second, it's actually very difficult to fool a real veteran for very long. The toy soldiers always slip up.

I find that a lot of people join the armed forces, not for any altruistic motives but because they want to see the world or can't find a job. In my case, my last year of school, my old man in June had just turned 65, retired, couldn't afford to send me further in school. And I had applied for a job at the mill....
The recruitment trailer was parked on Circle street in town and I was gonna join on their last day in town!
But a phone call from the Mill kept me from joining...

BTW, I actually enjoyed the Armed Forces but I was very young when I joined. I decided to go University instead when I was able and move in another direction. I guess, in a sense, I out-grew it. The Forces gives a whole lot of people a sense of security and belonging ... and direction, though.

Your post on the matter makes much more sense than others running rampant here. Some (idiots) also fail to realize that there are several other just as important and noble ways to serve one's country and community. Paramedics, nurses and firemen are badly needed on the home front as is the garbage man.
