Tory 'to seek action' to end gun violence with letter to Trudeau

Toronto Mayor John Tory has renewed his plea to ban handguns in the city in a new letter to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
In the missive sent to the PMO last Friday, but released to the media on Monday, Tory asked, “Why does anyone in the city of Toronto need a gun? Frankly, if we don’t have a good answer for that question then it’s time we do something about it.”
Tory tells Trudeau he’s met with families “who have lost their loved ones to gun violence,” and while it’s his “job to comfort them and express our city’s collective sorrow for their loss … I also believe it is my job to seek action.”

The mayor said Toronto city council recently addressed three key areas to “address gun violence in the city” to work on with the feds “including community investments, police resourcing and gun control.”
Tory also addressed the frustration he’s heard from Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders and police on the frontlines about “the easy availability of bail for repeat gun offenders.”
He asked the feds “to conduct a complete and expeditious review of bail guidelines and procedures applied to those already on bail, previously convicted of offences involving the possession or use of illegal firearms, or previously convicted of the use of a firearm in the commission of a crime.”
Tory writes the goal is “repeat gun offenders not be granted bail in the event of a subsequent gun charge and remain in custody until the charges have been disposed of by the judicial system.”
Tory spokesperson Daniela Magisano said the mayor sent the letter because it was discussed and approved of by council a few weeks ago.
Trudeau’s press secretary Matt Pascuzzo said the PM had received the letter.
“When it comes to keeping communities safe from gun violence, we are open to all options,” the statement read.
“The truth is there’s a growing problem with gun crime, especially in Canada’s largest cities. This is a dangerous trend, and we must stop it.”
“Common-sense gun control that keeps assault weapons and illegal handguns off our streets can and will save lives,” continued Pascuzzo.
“That’s why we made this issue a priority, will continue to work with all partners, including the City of Toronto, to keep our communities safe.”

Maybe he should be asking why Somali immigrants need guns , or why the brown gang bangers need guns . Will his banning hand guns in the city of Toronto have any effect on those people ?

So we shoud only have gun contol in urban areas but predominately rural areas you can own whatever gun you choose to?
So only rich people should own guns but poor immigrants should not be allowed to own guns?
Is you life in so much danger you feel you need to own a handgun?
Do you feel there is a chance that our goverment may turn into a totalitarian system and that we need to bear arms to ensure a free democracy?
Have you tried to get a motorcycle license and seen the hops you have to jump through (actually pylons you gotta drive around)?
Bureaucratic bumbling and cost overuns are a fact of life in Canadian politics. Is the idea of a gun registry so abhorrent to you?
Picking and choosing what states to quote for stats is, In my opinion, incorrect. A simple look at the US and divide by 10 (population ratios) works for me. The 3 provinces and state you picked do not have large urban areas like Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal. 3 cities have a huge proportion of the Canadian population. St. Johns NB is a peaceful backwater local in comparison. Not all of us live in idealic small towns. I grew up in a small town that had not had a murder in 50 years.

The Danforth shooter had a pistol smuggled in from United States.....

The Eaton Centre guy who shot Jane Creba had a pistol smuggled in from United States.......

Paul Bernardo- the Scarborough rapist - made enough money smuggling pistols in from United States to buy a house in St. Catherines- conveniently close to the border for his smuggling operation! If he had not abducted and raped and murdered so many women, HE MIGHT BE STILL SMUGGLING GUNS!!!!!

Pistols are the weapon of choice for gangsters and virtually ALL the pistols come United States!!!!

LIE-berals want us to believe that stolen Cdn guns are as big a problem as smuggled Yankee pistols- but we DO NOT see criminals on our news carrying stolen Cdn LONG GUNS- its ALL Yankee pistols!!!!!

WE DO NOT see our cops raiding houses full of Cdn long guns!!!!!!

One has only to look at the recent news from Pickering where cops picked up 30 pistols and heaps of ammunition smuggled in from United States!!!!

Who buys stolen Cdn long guns? I suggest a look at Cdn hunters- including natives!!!!!

And by the way- natives are EXEMPT from registering their long guns- so no real way to trace where they came from!!!!!

Who buys smuggled Yankee pistols? The news channel shows it is Cdn gangsters- the ones being coddled by shameless vote buying LIE-beral hug a thug judges!!!!!

Which is better (or worse, depending who the gun is pointed at), have a crime and no gun in sight or have a gun and not a crime in sight? Points question so do your best, time's up.

I agree. Canadian guns laws should be more restrictive.

I agree that the current Canadian guns laws should be proven to be affective otherwise further restrictions are just further restrictions.
