Letter: Time to start treating law-abiding gun owners better
The federal government, if it wishes to be intellectually honest, must withdraw Bill C-71, An Act to amend certain acts and regulations in relation to firearms.
It’s ostensible purpose, if Ralph Goodale’s comments concerning the bill can be taken at face value, was to tackle the issue of gang violence and the use of illegal firearms in the commission of violent crime.
There is nothing in this legislation which addresses either.
I have read through this bill and virtually every provision that would be enacted into law targets law-abiding firearm owners in this country.
The agencies administered by his own government show that over the long-term violent crime, both involving firearms and not, have declined for decades.
Those same agencies show that the average firearm owner in this country is charged with criminal offences at a lower rate than the average Canadian.
The Liberal government was elected with the promise of meaningful change and avoid politics as usual.
Bill C-71 is no different than any other legislation introduced purely for ideological reasons.
I ask that the Liberal government withdraw this legislation and begin treating law-abiding firearms owners as their fellow citizens, not a group to marginalize and attack for ideology’s sake.
