Apparently for some people, not only are they entitled to live off the avails of their fellow citizens, but also the hard work and sweat of those people in neighboring countries.

Makes a lot of sense, don't it?

Oh my... you're not suggesting that government revenue should dovetail with government expenditure are you?

Don't cut my services.

OK, we won't. We'll raise your taxes then.

Like hell you will.

OK, we'll borrow then.

Thadda boy. Good doggy you.

That's exactly what happened, although you did not mention that it was later determined that when Greece joined the EU, they had cooked the gvt books such that there was no real reflection of exactly how bad things were.

And no they are bitching and whining about how mean the rest of the EU is in denying them a cushy lifestyle

So to Cliffy and Flossy who seem to think that the best approach is a default, and who seem to be almost in some sort of glee because of it, what do you think will happen to Greece now? Yes the bankers will be screwed (and they deserve to be for loaning Greece money in the first place) but how do you think the Greek government will go about everyday life? They will be forced to do austerity as they will not be able to borrow any money from anybody. Nobody will loan them any. They will have their own worthless currency again which will be of less value than toilet paper. Nobody will want to trade with it. They will have to convert it to USD or EUR to buy anything.

I can't fathom why you feel this is the better approach. Can you share your thinking in something other than tired memes?

Roughly 11 million Greek citizens. They payment that they needed to make to the IMF at the end of June was approx 1.7 billion Euros. This equates to about 155 Euros per person.

I can not fathom how this miniscule amount of money was not raised by the gvt

Even the NDP is more responsible than that. At least they acknowledge that they will need to raise taxes to pay for the services.

Greece - What You Are Not Being Told by the Media

According to mainstream media, the current economic crisis in Greece is due to the government spending too much money on its people that it went broke. This claim however, is a lie. It was the banks that wrecked the country so oligarchs and international corporations could benefit.

By Chris Kanthan / nationofchange.org Every single mainstream media has the following narrative for the economic crisis in Greece: the government spent too much money and went broke; the generous banks gave them money, but Greece still can’t pay the bills because it mismanaged the money that was given. It sounds quite reasonable, right?
Except that it is a big fat lie … not only about Greece, but about other European countries such as Spain, Portugal, Italy and Ireland who are all experiencing various degrees of austerity. It was also the same big, fat lie that was used by banks and corporations to exploit many Latin American, Asian and African countries for many decades.
Greece did not fail on its own. It was made to fail.

They are leftys. THey only think of themselves in the here and now. Never a concern about future generations.

Gotta love the "my-shyte-don't-stink" syndrome. Here in Ontario, we're getting a ringside seat while inept government sells out to snake oil salesperson - who'll laugh all the way to the Bank

The idea is that you reduce the revenue and spending is automatically lowered to balance the budget. However governments at all levels are addicted to spending and are more than willing to mortgage their grandchildren's future to buy a vote today. Greece has just been at it longer than most countries.
You can't run your household on borrowed money for any length of time so how can a country be expected to be any different?

I disagree. The idea should be that you reduce expenditure first, pay off the debt, and then cautiously reduce revenue.

Okay, that might be somewhat unfair. Text messaging is generally a pretty informal medium. Though I disagree with her opposition to austerity, I don't necessarily think that text message was referring to Greek policy over the years but rather to Greek policy now. That said, if she meant what she typed there, then I profoundly disagree with her. But given the informal medium, I'd give her a chance to retract those words.

But generally to partisan attack someone for a quip in such informal media just shows partisan prejudice for the NDP.

Greece is in the mess it is in because Greeks are generally left leaning with a HUGE sense of entitlement, Durry is partially correct, hard working Greeks have left Greece. What do you get with a country where the vast majority is part of the loony left? Greece, soon to be be followed by Portugal, Italy and Spain.

Lol @ conbots trying to spin this into an election issue.

Harper should not be lecturing anyone on economic performance, especially when we are on the cusp of a recession.

Greece should be left to go it on their own.

Let the people learn the lesson the natural way instead imposing some artificial austerity from another country upon them.

Just so we're on the same page here... You're saying that the oligarchs and international corporations (let's just call them the Illuminati to make things easier) have advanced billions of dollars to support Greece's entitlement programs and then, and only then, they collapse that economy such that the Illuminati then loses all its cash.

Yep... Makes all the sense in the world
