Why not just up the GST, it already taxes HYDOCARBON and is refunded to those who can't afford it?

You can't burn Carbon.

I can think of at least four reasons:

1. Using tax policies for social engineering is nothing new, especially for liberals, but conservatives have been guilty as well.
2. Optics. Liberals especially like to be seen to be doing something when they are really not doing anything helpful at all, and usually counterproductive. But it looks good on them.
3. Taxing "carbon" as it were, could include a host of things, including firewood, who knows.
4. Revenue, what government doesn't love that. People are still going to drink, smoke, heat their homes, a carbon tax is just the new "sin tax".

Carbon is big ol' attractive molecule that hydrogen and oxygen like to hang out with.

Are we taxing carbon or hydrocarbons? Carbon with friends?

I'm excited to hear a sensible response.

Is carbon a sl-t?

Neanderthals roamed the earth for some 300,000 years, in fact most people of Northern European descent have at least 3% Neanderthal DNA. And yes, climate change wiped them out, they shoulda' plugged that damned volcano.

And what idiot would believe any tax is revenue neutral. If it were so it would not exist. If you take money in it is revenue period. So it goes back to the people of the province, big deal, that's the way taxes work. It's just the government that decides who to steal from and who to give the spoils to. In that sense Robin Hood was "revenue neutral".

There was no volcano. It just happens every 100,000 years give or take.

Earth's climate is doomed to return to glaciation.
