Everyone is bending the knee to piss off Trump

This is an emotional issue and doesn't lend itself to logic however; if there seems to be a systemic problem in a country (and that certainly seems to be the case in the US), then it seems very appropriate to protest those issues using symbols of the country like the flag or the anthem.

Those, like Trump, who want to defend the symbols rather than recognize the problems behind the protest show their true colours by doing so. Trump is OK with doing that because he is constantly doing things that appeal to his base of supporters almost to the exclusion of everyone else. In this case, the protest seems to be very respectful. It isn't as if they are burning flags or interrupting the anthem with some kind of chant. It is also interesting that Trump and his supporters supposedly put so much symbolism and importance in the US flag and anthem but don't acknowledge the (negative) symbolism in the Confederate flag and other Confederate symbols. As Trump might say: Sad!

I don't care what the players do, they aren't management. Even if teams decided to punish them, the Union would blow a gasket.

Personally I thought it was a great way to get a message out without violence, blocking traffic or yelling at buildings.

The American people have much respect and emotional attachment with their flag . Their national anthem proudly exclaims " gave proof through the night that OUR FLAG was still there " .
One of the most compelling photos from WW2 is the shot of the U.S. flag being raised on that hill in Gautacumell ( or however it is spelt ) .For us up here in Canadu the flag is simply a Liberal rag fostered on us by the Person government , however for Americans the flag represents their freedom and independence from Britain .

It seems to me the message has been lost , and it is now all about Trump .

If they really want to screw with Donalds head they should stand on Confederate flags.

You're thinking "Guadalcanal," but the iconic flag-raising (the photo was staged, BTW) was at Iwo Jima.

It was not staged... it was just a second flag raising, as the first flag was too small. Joe Rosenthal wanted to get a picture of it going up.

"Re-enacted" would be a much more accurate term
;)
"Staged" means it was not a real event from the start, which it was.

Being difficult and wrong comes easy to you doesn't it?

Kinda meets the definition of 'staged' pretty much spot on.

How so? The flag raising wasn't staged, it was just the second flag raising. This was the first one.

The second flag was going up whether Joe Rosenthal was there or not because the men in charge of the Iwo Jima invasion wanted it to be seen around the whole island as well as the ships off shore. The first flag was simply too small.

It wasn't the first flag raising. So it was staged. Not saying it wasn't real, or that it didn't happen. It was staged, it was orchestrated.

It's not an insult to anyone or anything, it's simply the truth.

So, because the first flag was too small and the people in command decided a bigger flag was needed so that all could see makes it "staged"? If nobody got a picture of it, would it have been staged?

A man uses a bazooka to try and bust a bunker... the bazooka doesn't work. They call up a Sherman tank to blast the bunker and someone gets a picture of it. It must have been "staged."

Yes, yes - we know you love flags and big bazookas.

Yes, by the definition of the word 'staged', it does. If you don't know the meaning of the word, you can look it up.

That doesn't, by the way, take away the meaning or importance of the picture.
