From what I can gather Jefferson Davis resided in the U.S. from 1870 until his death in 1889 and to this day his birthday is celebrated every year through out the south.

Davis was imprisoned after the war, and released on bail in 1867. He was never charged with treason (no-one was), and he was pardoned by the general Presidential amnesty of all Confederates on 25 December 1868. He was a businessman and wrote books until his death in 1889.

You are correct. I had recalled that as an inscription in the old presidential house in Richmond, VA when I visited about 10 years ago but obviously mis-read or mis-remembered.

Real-estate magnate Donald Trump attacked Sen. John McCain's (R-Arizona) status as a "war hero" on Saturday, saying he was only viewed as a war hero because "he was captured."

Speaking at an event in Iowa, Trump argued that McCain — who has spoken out against Trump for his controversial comments about Mexican immigrants — was not a real war hero.

"He's not a war hero," Trump said. "He's a war hero because he was captured. I like people that weren't captured."
"Perhaps he's a war hero, but right now, he's said bad things about a lot of people,' Trump added.
The real-estate mogul also said that he didn't like McCain after his loss to President Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential election.

"I never liked him after that, because I don't like losers," Trump said.

Trump has recently spoken out more forcefully against McCain, after the veteran senator denounced Trump for "firing up the crazies" during a speech last week in Phoenix.

In response, Trump demanded an apology, and tweeted that McCain is a "dummy."

As The Washington Post reported, Trump is lobbying for a primary challenger to run against McCain in 2016.
Several Republican presidential candidates were quick to condemn Trump.

It was (now Democratic Senator) Al Franken that attacked McCain way back in 2000 about the war hero thing. Trump just re-used it.

"I have tremendous respect for McCain but I don’t buy the war hero thing. Anybody can be captured. I thought the idea was to capture them. As far as I’m concerned he sat out the war".

Trump has a big mouth and he should make sure he doesn't get more than one foot in it at a time. I predict he won't win the Republican nomination and then he's going to have to retool his opinion of losers. :) :) Who in his/her right mind would want to see him as their President? :)

I kinda like this Trump dude, but his latest attack on McCain give me reason to pause.

I have a lot of respect for those who sign up to do the heavy lifting for a country, but I'm not sure about those that didn't sign up to do the heavy lifting and their credibility to mock those who have.

TRUMP-COULTER IN 2016 would be the ideal ticket for the GOP. ;)

That would be either the end of civilization as we know it.. or an easy win for the democrats (hopefully).

But they would have one vote for sure.. Walter. (here comes my reddie)

Trumps not the first to question why McCain is considered a 'hero' for being captured, but Trump is the loudest to question why.

I have always disliked flip flopper, corporate bag licker McCain and wondered why he kept getting re-elected............

And McCain had done dirty deeds himself......

With Sen. John McCain returning to the campaign trail on Thursday on stump for Republican Sen. Saxby Chambliss in his runoff race in Georgia, Democrats are reminding voters and donors of a controversial ad aired by Chambliss in the heated final weeks of the 2002 campaign that shows pictures of Democratic Sen. Max Cleland, a triple-amputee from wounds suffered during his service in Vietnam, just after shots of Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein.

“Sen. Chambliss has his good pal, John McCain, to stand by his side and speak truth about his character,” the text of the ad reads before highlighting McCain’s comment. “It looks like even Sen. Chambliss’ buddy, John McCain, agrees. Georgians deserve better,” the ad concludes. A call to McCain's Senate office asking for comment on the 2002 ad was not returned by the time this article was posted.

Chambliss told MSNBC on Monday that "we're just very pleased to have [McCain] coming in on Thursday of this week.”

Kerry was a decorated Navy officer in Vietnam who became a prominent antiwar activist upon his return home. A group calling itself "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" has accused Kerry of lying to win combat decorations in Vietnam, including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

And last week, former Sen. Bob Dole, the party's 1996 presidential nominee, brought more attention to the allegations when he told CNN's Wolf Blitzer, "With three Purple Hearts, he never bled that I know of. And they're all superficial wounds."

Dole apologized for the remark the next day after a personal call from Kerry, saying that before taping the interview, "maybe I should have stayed longer for brunch somewhere."

Northern Ontario,
Hopefully, Trump won't pull a Ross Perrot, run as an independent when he doesn't get nominated, and put another Clinton in the White House....

Except he cant vote there, fortunately.

More people should try doing that. I imagine it'd be nice to be able to have more than two options.

Davis was accused of treason at one point but it appears not too much came of it.

Unfortunately.
