Ligers are cute!

They're not dogs, though.

my chocolate labradors

I once fed my sister's dog some chocolate. She still hasn't got over it even now.

We had a dog move in a few months ago. Saddest looking creature I've ever seen.

but the majority of people want pretty dogs... working dogs and the need for them is not current...therefore is it right to keep breeding dogs to retrieve that never will see a hunt, or to round sheep when they will never live on a ranch?

maybe just breed them for what they will settle into best, looking cute and living with people who spoil them

just asking

Uh, no, Sal........Check the price of a well bred Lab or Pointer. The demand is there. Plus good ones aren't sold in pet shops.
Big market for sheep dogs for agility training - and herding on sheep farms.
Ditto for Shepherds for search and rescue.

Demand for cute and fluffies also is high.

Not to mention the price for cute, fluffy and designer namedébred. Certain popular mixes cost more than either pure breeds! Fashion, eh? Ridiculous

okay thanks Nugs. I don't know a whole lot about them except that every freaking person in my building has one. most people here are elderly and those mutts are walked a zillion plus times a day...old ladies/men out in blizzards with their dogs in little coats and boots. The other half are gone to Florida for the winter...When I'm in the pool in the morning they get off of the elevator and parade past in a stream starting at 7 o'clock.

the only people I see with dogs are us city type folk so as far as I'm concerned as long there is a desire for cute dogs give 'em cute dogs... as long as they are spade and healthy and taken care of...the dogs in my building (with a few exceptions of course) are pampered expensive little s hits...but cute as heck...hell some of them weigh five or six pounds...little need for a big one although there are a few big ones in my building such as Farley but he is a rescue.

myself when I get one for my retirement it will be small rescue, but big enough for a good walk or two per day...and have to fit in with the cat

my girlfriend does Jack Russel rescue runs...they bring them up through Ontario from the States into Ontario and then they are sent all over to foster homes to get them cleaned up and socialized and ready for fur-ever homes...

so far she has added two more to her crew...one jack and I can't remember what thomas is... people who don't care for their animals should just be put down.

little need to buy one when so many need help but...that's the way people are

Right on Petros, enough of these god damn welfare dogs! -:)

I have a welfare dog.

He'll happily visit anybody who has food. Once, a nice lady gave him one of the dog treats she was on her way home with. After the treat, she gave him a pat and headed off. My dog looked at her, then looked back at me. Looked at her again and then back at me again and then started to follow her. Seems his loyalty is where there's food. He's a bum. A welfare bum.

That sound similar to what my local tree rat did. I went out to grab the mail, he saw me and came running up the stairs to the dish with peanuts and sunflowers seeds. The bowl was empty so he looked at me, looked the bowl then back up to me. I got the hint and refilled the bowl ASAP.

So, you've been trained well then, eh? So have I. My dogs and cats tell me when it's time for a treat. I dont' know how they all know what that time is...but they all know together. I feel ganged up on sometimes.

Is he a cute red one or is he a grey tree wolf?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
people who are familiar and live in the dog world, either breeding/showing/obedience/working/field/retrieve,
etc., realize that the working dog is more desired than ever, there so many clubs for training and working
one's dog for 'whatever' breed it is. it is wonderful, and the people cherish those dogs, and breed
them well, closely studying the future breedings to make sure the offspring are better and never worse,
doesn't work 100% of the time, but then those puppies are sold as pets, and the obvious pups that
can't wait to work at whatever they were bred for, begin to grow and become part of the competing
groups or just the groups who want to train their dogs for their own, (and the dogs) enjoyment.

no, working dogs are not dwindling away, they are becoming more desireable.

the sheepdog people are also very involved. hunters are training their pointers/retrievers more than ever,
along with other types of hunting dogs, and people hunt now just as they did years ago, just don't have to
do it to get meat for that days dinner. many hunters are donating all of their meat to food
shelters, to feed the homeless, if they don't want the meat for themselves, there are places to
donate the meat where they prepare it safely for contribution around the community.
we are part of a retrieving club, and if one goes on line to enter into trials etc., there are numerous
sites to read and become familiar with, all over north america and europe.

Muts are great dogs.

I have a problem with ultimate Yuppie status symbol of last few years.. the Labradoodle.. who look ridiculous, in fact they and their owners look ridiculous trotting around yuppieland in Vancouver with their noses in the air.

Go to the shelter and get a good ol' mut.. ugly as the night.. and a true pal for life.

Designer dogs have significant genetic defects. A ffn shame. So when you purchase that purebred check and see what health issue the do will encounter.

Coyotes and wolves are my favourite canines. They are still smart; haven't been peopled.

haven't been peopled. That's brilliant! What a truthfull statement.

I'm fortunate, I get to see coyotes alot here.
