I was told an amusing story by one of my Indian friends. It seems there is an ethnic group in India, called Sindhis (apparently Sindh is a province or a state in India). They evidently are very good at forging famous name brand products, selling them dirt cheap and still making substantial profits (since their goods are invariably shoddy, of poor quality and made very cheaply).

Anyway, most of their goods carry the proud stamp of ‘Made in USA’. USA stands for Ulhasnagar Sindhi Association.

Ulhasnagar, Maharashtra
But what does that have to do with the infrastrucutre of USA being privatised for the benefit of the private owned US corporation?

Not if Sara Polin comes with it. We don't need the oil and more ice that badly.

I doubt that the yanks would invade Canada and risk getting their little white shack torched again. That's assuming any of them ever read a history book.

Quite right, USA will find Canada singularly unpalatable. Especially Republicans will never agree to it. Canada joining USA will mean perpetual Democratic rule in Washington DC. Perhaps 1/10th of Canada’s population (Alberta) may vote republican, but 9/10th would be loyal Democratic voters.

Huh? I've lived in the States and while I found it to be quite nice, and the people pleasant, why would I want to be annexed? I like being Canadian. I like our albeit flawed healthcare system, and I like the fact that we suffered less during this recent recession that the States did, due to the way our banking system is run.
We may be similar but we aren't the same and I like being Canadian. I have no problem living besides the States, but I prefer to remain a citizen of a sovereign Canada, thank you.
And your post didn't display very well, either.

Quite so, DHW. USA is a great place to visit (in fact I am going there next month, to visit my cousin in Omaha), but I wouldn't want to live there (although I did live there for seven years).

It will be Australia or new Zealand for me. And we have more than enough to retire on, so money won't be a problem for us either.
roflmao You in Oz? Judging by any Aussies I've ever met, you'll be the butt of many practical and other types of jokes. Please take a videocam and post the results here.

Curse the facism that is the Electoral College.

That was sarcasm.

That may be sarcasm, but there is some truth to it. Electoral College is a strange, antiquated institution, which sometimes can go against the majority vote, as happened in 2000 (Gore got more popular votes, but Bush got more electoral college votes).

I think it has also happened once before in US history.

I like the Electoral College. It prevents the most populous states from having unreasonably more influence in presidential elections than less populous states. Sometimes complexity is needed, yo.

Well, yes. But at the same time, a vote by New York resident counts for less than a vote by Alabama resident, or a vote by Mississippi resident. Rather undemocratic, don't you think?

Of course, that also happens with the Senate. House on the other hand, is truly democratic, a state is alloted house seats based upon its population.

The ONLY way that any portion of Canada would ever join the USA would be if Quebec were to leave and become independent.

If that happened, the Maritime Provinces would be likely to join the US within a very few years.

I suspect that the Prairie provinces would resent the domination of Ontario even more than they do now, and they would quickly follow. BC, Nunavit, the territories and Ontario would hold out as long as possible, but eventually (35-60 years) they would be financially forced to either join, or become essentially irrelevant.

What you say may be true of Maritimes and Western provinces. I can see them joining USA at some stage.

But I don’t see Ontario ever joining USA. Don’t be fooled by the fact that there is no separatist talk, no separatist sentiment in Ontario (like there is in Quebec or the western provinces). If push comes to shove, Ontarians will deeply resent any thought of joining USA.

Ontario considers itself to be the linchpin of Canada, and it is not about to join any foreign country, not now, not ever. And it has sufficient population to go it alone, to make a success of it by itself. There are many nations in the world with a population of less than 10 million.

It is true that an independent Ontario may have very little influence internationally, but financially it can still remain a rich country.

It would be impossible to join the USA because it longer exisits.

I think Canada should annex Alaska (We should have bought it from Russia; I think we could raise $7.2 million to reimburse the Yanks for what they paid for it), Washington state, and Oregon (They were part of the HBC territory anyway; no reimbursement necessary!)
