Dandelions are your friend. Wine from flowers, salad greens from leaves and a medicinal beverage from the roasted roots. Add roasted Chickary root to the mix and you have a viable coffee substitute. Consume your dandelions. They are good for you. A weed is just a plant you haven't figured out how to use.

You're actually quite right, as usual Cliff.

I bet, wherever it is that you live, there are bylaws in place pertaining
to noxious weeds, etc...& with a complaint, the City/Town/RM will come
out.....clean up your neighbours yard...& tack that cost right onto his/her
property tax bill.

A thousand dollar bill to have 1/2 a dozen government employees in
his yard with weed whackers for a few hours might be a wake-up call
for buddy's right to his crop of weeds that are infesting your lawn.
Juan and I live in the same city. The City has developed a by-law. They have banned the use of any pesticides period and even banned many fertilizers. I live in an adult community where the lawns are becoming noticeably more "weedy" than previous years. Everytime I take my dog out I spend about 20 min. pulling weeds.
JUAN: We used to live up Island. We had a neighbour that did the same as yours. One day, feeling totally fed up with it, I waited until I knew everyone was either at work or at school and - I went and poured roundup into the flower beds that were producing only dandelions and had been for 2 summers. Killex has the same effect. You may have to head down to Can. Tire and see if they still have any left. Killex is kinder to the surrounding grass than Roundup is. There is a by-law regarding cleaning up your yard but it's for old junk laying around. I guess it applies to un-cut grass as well but I've never seen it applied.
I see our mall has new signs on it's "lawns". The signs say: The new Green is Brown. Gives them an excuse not to water the grass and against the little hill that leads to the highway, the grass has not even been cut. Makes the mall look pretty seedy. I meant to write into Beefs and Bouquets. There isn't that much grass there so I think for what little there is, they could keep it green green. Not brown green.

Maybe out in a field or pasture. I don't want them in my neighbourhood.
We used to go to church with a couple who live up in your area JLM. They both loved dandelions but it did not endear them to their neighbours either.

Really - Did not know that. Thanks
Killex works great. Buy it while you still can. Once one City starts passing out by-laws banning such things, others often join in.

I love dandelions growing out in the meadows, up on the hills, far away, but I hate them in my yard.

I dig them out as soon as they appear.

My daughter loves dandelions, she lives out in the country, but lets her property grow whatever it wants,
she does cut her grass, but allows the dandelions to grow, and whatever other wild flowers or weeds as
well. It does look OK in her area because of how big her property is, but in my little city yard, which
I keep nice and neat and green, (and I obey all sprinkling regulations), I don't want anything to look
messy and cluttery.

If I wanted dandelion wine, I can find them by the thousands somewhere else.

A weed is any plant on your property that is growing where you don't want it to grow.

Steps to a weed free yard recipe

1 late night without a moon or yard light

2 a spray bottle with a good weed killer there are lots out there.

3 Make sure all equipment is well greased so the neighbours are not informed.

4 Pour a long cool drink and admire your weed free lawn.

All this crap about letting the weeds grow, is nonsense, Municipalities are
catering to the environmentalists again at the expense of everyone else.
As a farmer I use the best environmental practices I can short of becoming
organic. The reason I don't go organic is the money isn't there in the long run.
Too much time and expense is required when the new target sprays do a good
job. For example I can kill a target pest that does damage, without killing the
beneficial pests, like lady bugs etc.
I myself use weed sprays for all kinds of weeds but dandelions are not one of
them. Dandelions are a favorite for thrips, and if I kill dandelions they attack
my apple blossoms and do damage to the fruit at a later date.
By the way you will never win the war against dandelions they are massive
but you can control them for a short period of time.

KIllex never worked for me, so I would be very careful and use Roundup. It alsways used to piss me off though, that I would be dandelion free and one neighbour never cared, so BANG! a couple weeks later there are damned yellow blossoms all over the place...

I let them grow, then pick them when the leaves are at there most succulent.

A little salt/pepper, dijon, balsamic, really good EVOO, accompanied by some other veggies, and you have a nice salad.

My lawn never turns yellow.

Yeah, I've tried Killex on dandelions- absolutely useless. The best way is to dig out the root with a screwdriver. From what I hear Roundup is a little too thorough, it kills everything.

you don't have a dog then, lol I have to make sure we walk the dog before he ventures around
the lawn.

yeah, once you have the dandelions under control, its easy to just dig out new ones, and I have cats,
and don't want them any where near pesticides. Fertilizer doesn't hurt the pets, just keep them off
the lawn for at least 24 hours after applying.

I use roundup at the front, spray it thru ornamental rocks, where weeds will grow thru, nothing around to
harm, and no pets in the area. No one lets their dogs wander around the neighbourhood, and even the
neighbourhood cats won't be harmed, as the round up goes under the rocks, then a little bit of spray with
water will make it dissapear alltogether, but the weeds go 'belly up'.

Killex is great if used right. You have to put it on so that it works it's way down to the roots. That means digging in a little. Little to no point in spraying the flower part. I know that digging them out is more successful once they are well grown but if you get them reasonably early, all you need is the Killex and a dry day. I don't use Roundup unless I want all growth in the area to die.

Male dogs don't exactly turn the grass yellow but they do kill it. We have several dead spots all over our lawn area because our neighbour has a male dog. Our dog is female and she doesn't hurt the grass. Every male dog we've owned has killed the grass and our son's dog did too. I have no idea why.
