CUPW Blamed For Privatization
I did some research on whose to blame for the privatization of the Canadian postal service and it falls directly on the Canadian Union Of Postal Workers or CUPW.
Before 1981 the federal government operated the Canadian postal service and their employees worked for the government of Canada.
At that time there was two main unions the Letter Carrier Union Of Canada or LCUC or essentially the outside workers which included the people that delivered the mail and the truck and van drivers and CUPW who were the inside workers who sorted the mail in the processing plants.
CUPW got discontented in negotiating with the government and pressured the government into becoming a crown corporation, which at first did not want to do but because of the constant pressure finally gave in and Canada Post became the new crown corporation.
CUPW was happy because they got to get agreements from another board.
LCUC was against the idea of the postal service becoming a crown corporation because they felt at the time that the taxpayers owned the post office and service to smaller communities would be dropped and since the main purpose of a crown corporation was to make money there would be a lot more job loss but because of the greed of the CUPW they got what they wanted and over the past 30 years LCUC was proved right.
Because of the governments high debt load the crown corporations will be on the selling list and Canada Post will be sold to the highest bidder.
I hope the Canadian Union Of Postal Workers is proud of their accomplishments but when you think about it was it worth it.
