You can see their triangular fins peaking above a field of the golden grain on Hwy. 8 between Stratford and Goderich near the hamlet of Dublin.


As anyone who has seen the movie Jaws can tell you, the dorsal fin poking above the wheat, about 30 metres back from the road, is the telltale sign of a relentless predator.

The purpose of these wheat sharks — the creation of retired nurse and landowner Anne Melady, 75 — is to promote mirth. All Melady wants is for those driving by the property to get a laugh amid the pandemic doom and gloom.

“We need some fun,” said Melady, who got the idea from a field she saw last year near Erin sporting similar fins. “It was so fun to see somebody make a wheat field look a little different. It just made me smile,” she said.

Melady sharecrops the land with a local farmer, and once the decision was made to put in wheat, she went to work, building the fins out of plywood before spray-painting them black. A welder friend helped attach brackets to them, and they are fixed to the ground with half-inch electrical piping.

“When the wind blows they do move some,” Melady said, which adds to the illusion. The more realistic, Melady figures, the bigger the laugh.

She’s heard from several people who enjoy the sight gag. One woman told Melady her three-year-old “loves to drive down the highway and look for the sharks.” And her sister-in-law in Manitoba confirmed to Melady that images of the shark-infested field have been shared online at least that far away.

But contrary to what you might think, Melady’s wheat sharks aren’t part of some kind of marketing campaign from the Discovery Channel to promote Shark Week, its annual festival of shark-related programming, which runs until Saturday.

Besides, Melady has never seen a shark in person, although she did once get up close with a pod of orcas. “It’s a whale of a story,” she said.

SYDNEY – Australia will deport British conservative commentator Katie Hopkins after she boasted on social media about appearing naked and maskless in hotel quarantine, in breach of the country’s strict rules, a government official said Monday.

“We will be getting her out of the country as soon as we can arrange that,” Australia’s minister of home affairs, Karen Andrews, told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. She added that Hopkins’s visa had been canceled.


Her brazen efforts to flout Australia’s strict quarantine regime struck a raw nerve in a country where some 11 million residents are in lockdown to curb outbreaks of the delta variant. Tens of thousands of citizens are stranded abroad, because authorities have capped the number of international arrivals to relieve pressure on the hotel quarantine system, which requires anyone who enters the country to spend two weeks in a hotel at their own expense.

Hopkins had come to Australia for the reality television show “Big Brother VIP.” Australia is officially closed to everyone but citizens, residents and their immediate family. But exceptions are made for some foreigners, including sports teams and celebrities, deemed to be making an important economic contribution.

Brad Hazzard, the health minister of New South Wales state, which put in place a plan last year to allow film companies to bring celebrities in for big projects that would create jobs during the pandemic, said he was “shocked” by Hopkins’s behavior.

“To think that she could actually think that the measures we are taking to keep our community safe can be treated with such juvenile, imbecilic behavior is just mind-boggling,” Hazzard told reporters Monday, adding: “I hope she’s on the first plane back.”


In a statement Monday, Australia’s Seven Network and Endemol Shine Australia said that Hopkins “is not part of ‘Big Brother VIP,'” adding that they “strongly condemn her irresponsible and reckless comments in hotel quarantine.”

In a video posted to Instagram, Hopkins criticized the strict rules, saying in an expletive-ridden rant that she thought it was ridiculous that she could enter the country when others could not.

“Lockdown is and remains the greatest hoax in human history,” she said in the video.

Hopkins said that when food was dropped off at her Sydney hotel room where she was set to quarantine for 14 days, she was required to wait 30 seconds to open the door while wearing a face mask.

Instead, Hopkins – giggling – said she had been trying to surprise quarantine officials by sprinting to the door when she heard a knock, opening it “naked with no face mask.” The antics were “one game that I’m playing” with authorities at the hotel, she said. She added that she hoped the tricks would get an official to reprimand her so she could stand naked in front of him.

Andrews said that Hopkins’s actions were “despicable” and “appalling,” adding, “All visa holders must abide by the health directions issued by our health officials. We won’t tolerate those who don’t.”

A representative for Hopkins did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Early Monday local time, Hopkins reposted a video to her Instagram story criticizing the fear over the delta variant.

Australians stranded abroad, meanwhile, and other residents who are unable to leave the country for fear they won’t be able to return, aired their displeasure at Hopkins’s actions.

Rachel Oppen, an American living in Sydney with her Australian American husband and 11-year-old son, said it is “super, super frustrating that people like [Hopkins] are able to come through and yet we can’t go home, even though we are vaccinated.”

Oppen, a tech consultant who is originally from Ann Arbor, Mich., said she normally travels to the United States two or three times a year but hasn’t seen her family since January 2020 because of the travel restrictions.

“It’s a long time, especially for a child my son’s age, and with older parents it’s a challenge, too,” she said. “For me, there’s a constant anxiety level because I can’t go home and I don’t know when I’ll be able to go home. You don’t know who is going to be there when you get back.”

The decision to deport Hopkins comes as the worst coronavirus outbreak in almost a year led officials Saturday to tighten lockdown restrictions in Sydney, the country’s most populous city, shutting down all nonessential retail and pausing all construction work. The city’s 5 million residents are only allowed to leave their homes to exercise outdoors or to shop for groceries. Neighboring Victoria state went into shutdown last week as well after a group of interstate furniture movers sparked a string of cases.

The outbreaks in Australia are small by global standards; the largest, in Sydney, started with an airport limousine driver and has grown to a little more than 1,300 cases. Unlike many countries where the virus has long circulated in the community, Australia has sought to quash any outbreaks down to zero.

Hopkins has a history of inflammatory comments. In 2017, she tweeted that a “final solution” was needed after the Manchester bombing. She deleted the tweet and said her use of the Nazi term for its genocide of Jews was a “typo.”

In his first TV interview since leaving his job last year, excerpts of which were released on Monday, Dominic Cummings said Johnson did not want to impose a second lockdown in the autumn last year because “the people who are dying are essentially all over 80.”

Cummings also claimed that Johnson wanted to meet Queen Elizabeth, 95, despite signs that the virus was spreading in his office at the start of the pandemic and when the public had been told to avoid all unnecessary contact, particularly with the elderly.

The political adviser, who has accused the government of being responsible for thousands of avoidable COVID-19 deaths, shared a series of messages from October that are allegedly from Johnson to aides.

In one message, Cummings said Johnson joked that the elderly could “get COVID and live longer” because most people dying were past the average age of life expectancy.

Cummings alleges Johnson messaged him to say: “And I no longer buy all this NHS (National Health Service) overwhelmed stuff. Folks I think we may need to recalibrate.”

Reuters could not independently verify whether the messages were genuine.

A spokesperson for Johnson said the prime minister had taken “the necessary action to protect lives and livelihoods, guided by the best scientific advice.”


Cummings told the BBC that Johnson told officials that he should never have agreed to the first lockdown and that he had to convince him not to take the risk of meeting the queen.

“I said, what are you doing, and he said, I’m going to see the queen and I said, what on earth are you talking about, of course you can’t go and see the queen,” Cummings said he told Johnson. “And he said, he basically just hadn’t thought it through.”

Despite questioning Johnson’s fitness for his role as prime minister and castigating the government’s fight against COVID-19, Cummings’ criticism has yet to seriously puncture the British leader’s ratings in opinion polls. The full interview will be broadcast on Tuesday.

Health Canada reported that as of July 20, 161 flights landed carrying passengers who tested positive for COVID-19 so far this month. That’s compared to 111 recorded during the first 20 days of June, and 78 from May 1-20.


Mexican airports are Canada’s largest source of COVID-infected flights aside from the U.S. this month with 14 reported departing from Mexico City and Cancun.

That was followed by Amsterdam and Istanbul with 13, Paris and Doha, Qatar, with 12, London with eight, Casablanca with seven, and the United Arab Emirates with six.

Airports in Cuba saw five departures, three each from Frankfurt, Warsaw, Panama, Pakistan, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and two flights each from Manila, Seoul, Tokyo, and Tunis, the capital of Tunisia.

Direct passenger flights from India have been banned from Canadian airports since April 22. wit Those from India arriving via indirect flights must obtain a negative COVID-19 PCR test at their last port of entry before departing for Canada.

Health Canada doesn’t make public the number of infected passengers on each flight, providing only a range within two or three rows of where infected passengers supposedly sat.

As well, Health Canada’s data only relates to the city and airport each flight originated from; no information is available on individual cases, their nationality or when they began their journeys.

Of the four Canadian airports permitted to accept international flights, Toronto currently sits at 74 as of July 20, followed by Montreal with 46, and 20 each from Vancouver and Calgary.

Israeli lab: Some existing drugs could stop COVID at almost 100%​

A Hebrew University of Jerusalem research team found 18 drugs that they felt could be effective in the treatment of patients who contract COVID-19.​

Scientists from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem say they have identified several drugs that could potentially help treat, if not “cure,” people who develop COVID-19.

Prof. Shy Arkin, a biochemist in the Alexander Silberman Institute of Life Science, told The Jerusalem Post that in lab tests in which cells infected with SARS-CoV-2 were placed together with the drugs for two days, “almost 100% of the cells lived despite being infected with the virus.”

In contrast, without the preexisting drug compounds, around 50% of the cells died after coming in contact with the virus.

Arkin and his team culled through a library of more than 2,800 approved-for-use compounds, identifying 18 drugs they felt could be effective. In unpublished work, the researchers were able to show that several of these compounds “exhibited remarkable potency against the whole virus in in vitro experiments.”

Two of them are Darapladib, used for the treatment of atherosclerosis, and Flumatinib, used for the treatment of certain blood cancers. Arkin said he was hesitant to share the names of any of the drugs, adding that he could not recommend them until they underwent proper clinical trials.



The team focused on drug repurposing to potentially expedite any future regulatory steps. Since the drugs are already being used for other indications, their toxicity and side effects, for example, are known and approved.

The way the drugs work is by inhibiting two targets in the virus: the E (envelope) protein and the 3a protein.

The E protein is the most conserved of all virus proteins. For example, while the spike proteins of SARS-CoV-2 and SARS-CoV-1 (the 2003 virus) are only about 75% identical, their E proteins are roughly 95% alike. This means the drugs would likely remain effective even when the virus mutates, Arkin told the Post.

The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines target the spike protein.

In previous studies, E and 3a proteins were shown to be essential for viral infectivity. Arkin’s team was among the first to study the E protein of the first SARS coronavirus in 2004.

As part of research that Arkin’s team has been conducting for more than two decades, they identified that the E protein is an ion channel, a type of protein family expressed by virtually all living cells that because of its structure has “served as excellent and frequent targets for pharmaceutical point interventions,” including for cystic fibrosis, epilepsy, arrhythmia, neurodegenerative diseases, hypertension, angina and more, the report said.

It is important that “a large arsenal” of drugs exist to fight SARS-CoV-2, Arkin said.

“We should never be in a situation where in our arsenal we only have one firearm,” he said. “If we only have one and we rely solely on it, and then there comes a time that it fails, we will be in a very precarious situation.”

Arkin believes his team is set for in vitro and in vivo studies, and he is looking for a pharmaceutical partner to help carry these trials through.

Citing the success of Gilead obtaining US Food and Drug Administration approval for Remdesivir in record time at the start of the pandemic, Arkin said he was optimistic that at least some of these compounds could be approved for use against COVID “very quickly with the right partner.”

Health Canada reported that as of July 20, 161 flights landed carrying passengers who tested positive for COVID-19 so far this month. That’s compared to 111 recorded during the first 20 days of June, and 78 from May 1-20.


Mexican airports are Canada’s largest source of COVID-infected flights aside from the U.S. this month with 14 reported departing from Mexico City and Cancun.

That was followed by Amsterdam and Istanbul with 13, Paris and Doha, Qatar, with 12, London with eight, Casablanca with seven, and the United Arab Emirates with six.

Airports in Cuba saw five departures, three each from Frankfurt, Warsaw, Panama, Pakistan, and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and two flights each from Manila, Seoul, Tokyo, and Tunis, the capital of Tunisia.

Travellers flying into Canada — currently only open to citizens, permanent residents and those whose travel is deemed essential — must present a recent negative COVID-19 test before being allowed to board their flight.

Direct passenger flights from India have been banned from Canadian airports since April 22. wit Those from India arriving via indirect flights must obtain a negative COVID-19 PCR test at their last port of entry before departing for Canada.

Health Canada doesn’t make public the number of infected passengers on each flight, providing only a range within two or three rows of where infected passengers supposedly sat.

As well, Health Canada’s data only relates to the city and airport each flight originated from; no information is available on individual cases, their nationality or when they began their journeys.

Of the four Canadian airports permitted to accept international flights, Toronto currently sits at 74 as of July 20, followed by Montreal with 46, and 20 each from Vancouver and Calgary.

Is there a possibility of a monkeypox outbreak in the United States?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention isn’t taking any chances as it monitors more than 200 people from 27 states for possible exposure to the virus after they came in contact with someone from Texas who contracted the disease in Nigeria this month.


Monkeypox is an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus and is mostly transmitted from animals to humans, according to the CDC. Symptoms may include fever, rash and swollen lymph nodes.

The disease occurs primarily in tropical rainforest areas of Central and West Africa. Monkeypox has an incubation period of three to 17 days.

According to the New York Post, the unnamed Texan had travelled from Lagos, Nigeria, to Dallas — with a stop in Atlanta, Ga., — between July 8-9, a week before they were diagnosed with the bug.


The CDC is monitoring those who have come in contact with the person, which included those who sat within two metres of them or have used the airplane’s bathroom during the flight.

According to the CDC report, monkeypox cases outside of West Africa are rare, with the last outbreak in the U.S. in 2003 when there were 47 confirmed and probable cases linked to a shipment of infected exotic animals.

The CDC noted the Texas case comes on the heels of the three confirmed cases in the U.K. in 2018 that were linked to a Nigerian worker.

New Health Ministry statistics indicated that, on average, the Pfizer shot — the vaccine given to nearly all Israelis — is now just 39% effective against infection, while being only 41% effective in preventing symptomatic COVID. Previously, the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine was well over 90% effective against infection.

Meanwhile, a new UK study published this week in The New England Journal of Medicine found the same vaccine to be 88% effective in preventing symptomatic COVID — more than twice the rate found in the Israeli data.....More
