I used to work in the private sector and took a pay cut when I moved to the public sector. I gave up income for a better lifestyle and time with my kids. I get a kick out of people that think the public sector is a gravy train.
You went from a job with little security and where you had to produce to keep your job with probably far less benefits to one that only requires you to show up breathing to get paid and it is guaranteed for life unless you really screw up. It also depends just where you are in the pecking order how much better public pays than private. When productivity is factored in public is way higher paid.
I worked for DND for a while as a mechanic and could not take the level of incompetence and lack of work ethic and the cost of doing even s simple repair and had to go back to the real world.

The bottom 20% in Canada earn only 1% of the income.
Cannuck is right. The public sector worker often trades income for security.
That would be the ones working in fast food, hotels, and tourism. The same skill set working for the government pays about double plus a solid gold pension and benefits plan and not have to work near as hard. Look at the PSAC pay scale.
