How would have socialism/communism ever provided a solution to this event?
well in socialism more there would be more input from the working class rather than the bourgeoisie in parliament. the bourgeoisie of course only caring to maximize their own profits.

The working classes are immediately stomped on by self-proclaimed "leaders" and have never held power anywhere for more than just the briefest of instants.

the bourgeoisie of course only caring to maximize their own profits.

Longing for those good old days of Pol Pot, eh?

I'll bet my secret decoder ring that you are bourgeois yourself. Only the bourgeoisie use words like "bourgeoisie". The working man (or women) are not nearly so effete.

like pol pot gave a **** about the working class. blatant psychopath.

also the bourgeoisie never refer to themselves as that, they probably think they're victims. they're brain damaged from being detached from reality from inheritance of wealth that stems from centuries ago , back when their forefathers stole land.

He sure liked killing bourgeoisie, though. In fact he killed them all and set Kampuchea back a hundred years. Why are educated people always a threat to these utopias?

pol pot was an enemy of the working class, and not a friend of the poor. he forced urban dwellers to work on collective farms, and provided terrible medical care and food. sounds like a capitalist.

Ever see the old Doonesbury cartoons of "Megaphone" Mark going to construction sites talking up the "worker/student alliance" and getting his butt kicked by real workers?

That was ultimately the death of the Soviet Union. Especially as computers became more common, they simply couldn't keep up with the material advances of the west while at the same time controlling their population.

Oh, and their alloy technology sucked too.

no , no alternatives have been tried

Well communism has turned out to be a colossal failure everywhere it has been tried. Both times BC tried socialism the economy promptly tanked and taxes rose. Neither sounds too good to me. Never seen a capitalist country that felt a need for barbed wire and guns to keep their citizens from escaping either.

holy ****. you think the end of capitalism would be the end of humanity? you're insane. just insane.

Of course it would be. What else will generate the money needed to keep everyone employed and fed?

Workhouses are socialist.

Not really. Socialists don't believe in work. They all feel the government must provide. That is why socialism don't work.

Typical communist.

he's not calling rich people evil, he's dispelling the myth that they're job creators.

Ok, if rich people don't create jobs, who does oh wise one?

Just askin....

The ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER

This one is a little different. Two Different Versions. Two Different Morals.

OLD VERSION:

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his

house, and laying up supplies for the winter

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the

summer away.

Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed. The grasshopper has no food or

shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE OLD STORY:

Be responsible for yourself!

MODERN VERSION:

The ant works hard in the withering heat and the rain all summer long,

building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the

summer away.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands

to know why the

ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while he is cold and starving.

CBC, CTV, Global and City TV show up to provide pictures of the shivering

grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table

filled with food. Canada is stunned by the sharp contrast.

How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is

allowed to suffer so?

Kermit the Frog appears on CBC News with Peter Mansbridge along with the

grasshopper and everybody cries when they sing, 'It's Not Easy Being Green.'

People Against Poverty stages a demonstration in front of the ant's house

where the news stations film the group singing, We Shall Overcome.

Then Justin Trudeau has the group kneel down to pray for the grasshopper's

sake.

Kathleen Wynne condemns the Ant and blames Prime Minister Harper, former

Premier Mike Harris, Bill Davis, Joe Clarke, Harold Ballard, and Conrad

Black for the grasshopper's plight.

Justin Trudeau and Scott Brison explain in an interview with Wendy Mesley

that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper and both call

for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.

Finally, the ProvincialLiberal/NDP coalition drafts the Economic Equity and

Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.

The ant is fined for failing to hire a proportionate number of green bugs

and having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes his home is confiscated

by the Ontario Governments Green Czar, Dalton McGuinty, and given to the

grasshopper.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper and his free-loading friends

finishing up the last bits of the ant's food while the government house he

is in, which, as you recall, just happens to be the ant's old house,

crumbles around them because the grasshopper doesn't maintain it.

The ant has disappeared in the snow never to be seen again.

The grasshopper is found dead in a drug related incident, and the house, now

abandoned, is taken over by a gang of spiders who terrorize and ramshackle

the once prosperous and peaceful neighbourhood.

The entire Nation collapses bringing the rest of the free world with it.

MORAL OF THE STORY:

Be careful how you vote in the next election

I've sent this to you because I believe that you are an ant!

Ok, if rich people don't create jobs, who does oh wise one?

The question implies only a surface level understanding of economics. There are just way too many assumptions that need unpacking. If you really want to get down to it you'd have to feel away the 20th century political theatre and dig much much deeper. How much time do you have?

I'm questioning your understanding of economics myself. Please answer the question.

Oh, unless you are one of the ones that figure government can provide jobs.

Allow me to give you the basics of economics as I understand it, if you don't mind.

In the Oxford dictionary "economic: maintained for the profit, on business lines, adequate to pay or recoup expenditure with some profit" economics: the "science of production and distribution of wealth;

So....

Someone (rich or at least wealthier than I) has money to invest; likely in a business. (Of course it could be in stocks and bonds as well) but we'll use business here. If they do their due diligence, the business will be successful (i.e. create a profit) so that employees and bills can be paid. In turn, (hopefully) profits are such that they will pay taxes, donate to various charities, re-invest in the business, help grow it thus creating more employment, pay more taxes, give raises, offer benefits to their employees. And around and around it goes.

Each individual working for this company, purchases goods and services, pays taxes, rents or purchases homes, donate to charities buy vehicles all of which also supports other businesses (i.e. grocery stores, real estate, dealerships, Red Cross et al) who in turn invest in their businesses, pay taxes, employ individuals who also buy groceries, pay taxes, purchase homes and cars etc. etc.

Admittedly this is pretty basic as economics go, but you get the drift. It is also part of what is called "capitalism".

So, what part of economics don't I understand as I appreciate being enlightened. I've never said that I was the brightest knife in the drawer - learning is a lifelong pursuit of mine, so please feel free....
