With the Global Free Markets in absolute chaos, lurching from crisis to crisis.. with Canada's industrial and agricultural economies in precipitous decline.. this little ass wipe Harper continues to grovel before his masters in the IMF, WTO, World Bank who are dictating a world of market driven forces from which only a few grotesquely rich oligarchs in trade and finance will profit.

Essentially the Wheat Board protected the farmers from the roller coaster of commodity prices that drove farmers to the brink in the Great Depression. At the same time it protected the long term viability of Canadas grain producing infrastructure by levelling the short term, and panic driven prices during shortages and gluts of crops.

We really are being led by a weakling in Harper, a petty ideology, a shill and quisling for Global oligarchs. And there are enough people out there who want to profit, short term, at the expense of the country as a whole that he is getting away with it. The outcome long term will be decimation of Canada's grain producing ability.. and starvation.

Just so freakin bang on it's laudable. Wish I'da said that.............specially the shill and quisling parts.....WTG, Coldstream.!! Our poor friggin country is going to suffer so much in the future from these dildo idiots.............slow learners in economist's clothing.

The Conservative government has repeatedly said it will strongly defend Canada’s supply management system and that it wasn’t yet in the country’s interest to join the trade group — something reaffirmed Saturday by International Trade Minister Ed Fast.

But Sunday, Mr. Harper stressed his government now wants into the TPP, currently being negotiated among the United States, Australia, Brunei, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. He said he was informed that Mr. Obama has asked for Canada to join the trade agreement.

Canada applies to join U.S. and Asia-Pacific region free trade agreement: Harper | News | National Post

Looks like those supply management systems may be on their way out yet.

The radio ad featuring a Canadian farmer who thinks he can't stand up to the big Americans is hilarious. Makes the farmer sound like a real dufus.

The Ontario grape growers had the same doubts about free-trade back in the 80's. It caused them to become more efficient in their operations and finally start producing a world-class product instead of Baby Duck.

It should be noted that a nation that cannot feed itself or control its own food supply
is a nation in crisis without knowing it. Yes food is like an essential service and we
need to maintain a Canadian advantage for our producers. The Chinese are buying
up farmland in several countries because the know a future food shortage is coming.
I have no problem with a Canadian advantage for farmers. Besides the managed
marketing system is a good one for all commodities and should be encouraged.
Competition is one thing but it should be remembered the government has sold out
agriculture at every set of free trade talks and soon there will be a shortage of farmers
period. Young people are not getting into the industry. Increasing middle classes in
other countries will buy up our quality food from farms in this country that they own
Canadians will be out of the farm business. The governments will be paying lip service
to agriculture and paying out for industry programs to foreign farmers.
It is unfortunate that some people can't see beyond the end of their nose until it is too
late to take action. If the general public only knew how much trouble they were in food
wise, but hey, Canadians wait to the last minute right?
I hope the farmers are successful, if not our grain industry will be destroyed likely by the
Americans.
I make no bones about it I am trying to get managed marketing or supply management for
the tree fruit industry across this country. I know it will be resisted by the Tories, but I think
with their majority, four years from now their popularity will have crested and who knows
who will form government. The Wheat Board is doing the right thing here.

Depends on just how the supply is managed. If one must buy quotas and be punished for producing over quota then no. Many fisheries are now on a boat quota which is almost a license to print money just like eggs and milk while others are on a fleet quota where the ambitious and smart will make more money than the slackers. Don't confuse supply management with bulk or group marketing. It is not the same thing.

The elimination of the long-gun registry and the CWB are bones thrown to the far-right base. If the Harper government were commited to acting democratically they would hold a wheat/ barley- producer vote. One producer, one vote.

We already had one. Producers said no by 63%. Dishonourable Gerry Ritz said "**** you".

It won't do any good. With someone as monstrously fixated on a failed economic paradigm (Global Free Markets), even as it collapses around him, as Harper.. it'll go in one ear and out the other.

He'll just respond with that dumb, dull eyed smirk he greets all 'non-believers' with these days. He only listens to his puppet masters in the halls of the debauched trading oligarchy.. and their mad plan for global domination.. by way of quislings like Harper.

Once again, Coldstream, I wish I had said that. Going to print it, frame it, and keep it. When this all plays out and we're paying $5.00 a loaf for bread, at least I can look at it hanging on the wall, and say "by Jesus, one guy had it right."

C., Morgan: are you being paid to shill for Harper or are you just retarded? monolithic corps. have our best interests at heart........right.

If CWB and the marketing boards are gone the consumer will have cheaper foods from other countries that do not have safe regulations on livestock handling and with the recent decision on country of origin food labelling the consumer will have to put up with more food recalls that is if they get it before they eat it and get sick and die.

Our federal government was successful on pulling the wool over the eyes of the consumer and we have to remember we voted them in to protect us and all they are doing is increasing funeral jobs.

Since 2006 I've noticed our lives have become shorter and less enjoyable. Didn't we used to have fire and the wheel before that mean old Harper took them away from us?
