Canadian war vets fight for disability benefits while Omar Khadr counts his millions

Ottawa shamefully handed over millions to a hostile war combatant while haggling over compensation for disabled Canadian soldiers who served the country, says a watchdog group fighting for veterans.

The Equitas Society says it wants the Canadian government to abide by the Charter rights of Canadian disabled soldiers and acknowledge claims under the New Veterans Charter, similar to the $10 million it recently awarded to Omar Khadr, a Canadian war combatant in Afghanistan.

The Society wants the government to stand up to its veterans’ obligations.

They want Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to honour elections promises that the Liberals made to restore lifelong pensions and fair compensation to disabled soldiers.

“I know many Canadians are outraged by Mr. Khadr receiving over 10 million dollars of taxpayer money, but every Canadian should be even more outraged that Prime Minister Trudeau is treating our disabled veterans so very poorly,” said Marc Burchell, president of Equitas Society.

“The Equitas Society and its legal team remain committed to obtaining fair compensation for our disabled veterans.”

Since 2012, a group of six disabled Afghan veterans who fought for Canada have been in a legal battle with the government over the meager disability benefits provided compared to what disabled veterans received before 2006, when the New Veterans Charter was introduced.

The NVC ended the practice of disabled soldiers receiving life-long pensions, which was replaced with a single settlement plan that resulted in many veterans only receiving a fraction of what others received in the past.

Ottawa has argued in court that it has no “social contract” with members of the Canadian Armed Forces and litigation is continuing with disabled veterans.

“In all my years of legal practice I have never witnessed a more deserving group of individuals deprived of so much by their own government”, said Don Sorochan, lawyer for the six disabled soldiers fighting Ottawa for disability benefits.

This is an ongoing problem.

At the homeless shelter, we have had three vets in the last year or so needing help. Their medical issues being state of mind related more than physical.

My personal issue here is that my father, wounded in WW2, and My uncle, who spent 4 years in the trenches in France, had to fight for 40 years to get their pensions from those situations.

In my uncle's case, the government tried to claim he shot himself in the back with a REFLECTED german rifle bullet.
Just picture that for a second.

My father was hit by a huge chunk of steel thrown by a shell blast explosion which dropped on his back.

It turned out some of the people who were supposed to be paying the METIS and NdN soldiers were stealing.

Now, I don't disregard paying Khadr, which some might, but I do have a real problem with the way Canadian government treats OUR wounded or damaged soldiers. These are the soldiers who made Canada a country famous for competency, decency, and justice the world over - maybe the biggest reason Canada is a well regarded country by so many on BOTH sides of the conflicts we have been involved in, and the people in the countries that Canada has fought to liberate.

I was raised by a community of veterans from ww1 and WW2 and Korea, and feel I owe a huge debt for the things I learned from them about everything.
( My single father being the most prominent teacher from that group)

IMHO Canadian soldiers deserve better.
What do you think?

Disgusting, isn't it? Knowing the traditional Liberal Party disdain for our military, the wounded Vets will get the bum-titty in the end.

Yeah, I had my father's first check from them in my pocket to give to him the day he died, and because of the turn of events forgot to tell him.

Fortunately he had gotten a letter from the government saying he had won a week before.
The fight certainly filled up the whole time of the elder trudeau's reign and more.

I read of people whining because Khadr was treated unjustly. To them, I say, he was spared the battlefield execution traditional among mercenaries and spies. What in Hell more could he want?

I hope they treat you better RCS.

No they didn't. I sustained three leg operations and was booted medically in 98. When I applied for veterans benefits they brought in a hired gun to review my case and denied it. I ran through every appeal process and was still denied. All I wanted was medical coverage.

Efficient Cultivation of the Outrage generated by the Khadr Project will ultimately lead to greater numbers of disabled vets who will likely be treated exactly the same way they are now or worse. Any change would likely be reflected in bigger flags and poppies and more parades.

The fact that the Lieberals absolutely despise the military is quite well known across Canada.

The disgusting part is actually that the Conservatives try to preach something better, and fail just as bad
as the Lieberals, either by the same mentality or sheer incompetence.

I would support a party that really would take care of vets, but that party doesn't exist.

False dichotomy. The money given to Khadr wasn't taken away from war vets, and there's no reason to believe that if Khadr hadn't gotten a loonie, the budget for war vets would have increased.

I am really sorry to hear that.

I know how much it sucks to be there.

Khadr, as an example, is just a comparison between who gets money and who, like the Troops, do not.
We are observing who the government are happy about paying and those they are not happy about paying. Khadr is a good payout for propaganda purposes. The Troops, not so much.

I won't bring up the VA, other than to say that I have heard it is also a nightmare for many.
