I have to confess I don't think about that stuff a lot but it's interesting (twitter and its effect on the Idols). If you check out @SLangoneAI10 you will see the comments are all very positive, though. So I think a few negative comments (if any) are offset by all the confidence-building. You know, I think overall this is going to be a short ride on the fame bus for most of these people, so if they can feel like a star for 15 minutes, it outweighs a lot of the evil stuff.

I think the comments on the forums and blogs are probably way more damaging to the ego, overall. Didn't Kris say he and his wife stopped reading, after a while? I can see why, if they read MJ's.

My local news is now doing a teaser about how the show wasn't live tonight. And whether that means manipulation. Talked about how Nigel called people morons on twitter.

The Idol guy on the news - Nick Dussault - who I don't like and don't usually watch - made the point that Jacob saying R. Kelly was his Idol was unbelievable. Didn't go into specifics, but I thought the same thing. Child porn. etc.

He was my favourite coming into tonight (twitter annoyances aside  ) but that was awful. I'm glad I don't have to vote for him or anything. It's very freeing, lol.

Lol! I don't feel like voting. I'm not voting. Maybe if I feel like it some day, I will. I don't recognize this show.

I'll vote for this guy.

Even positive comments can mess with you though...

The moron comment will never not be funny.

I completely agree that's the first thing I thought of too, not really someone I'd Idolize tbh.

ETA: Missaddicted Etalk had Marie Mai on their show today! :)

Can't really say there were any really bad performances tonight but some were pretty average. Definitely a lot better vocal talent overall than other years.

Best of the night:

Men - James & Casey
Both these guys bring it all the way all the time, both have that 'something different' about them, both have the air of cooooool! The rest of the men are in tough.

Women - Pia & Thea (how silly does that sound when you say it)
Pia may have been a little plain but a very strong voice with great tone and she's gorgeous. Thea, she's gotta be lying about 15 voice like she's been doing it 20 years, wasn't killed by the jazzy bit but 15? 15? None of the other women come close to these two for tone.

Honorable Mentions:
Scotty, Jacob & Lauren

Scotty is absolutely fabulous if you like country, if I were him I would get myself off the show and head for Nashville right now, the producers there can't wait I'm sure.

Jacob was kinda dissapointing after his last 2 performances, this kid still has an amzing voice but the gospel tone and choir took away from him. He could be the next Smokey Robinson, or better, but we will see.

Lauren, she has a great voice and something in her looks, the smile can light the room when its turned on. She really needs to gain confidence yet and control the emotions. If she gets it all together she'll contend for the top.

Going home:
Paul or Hailey

Sorry kids, just didn't do it for me. Totally weirded out by Paul, didn't like the song, didn't like the dancing. He was good doing Rod Stewart but his voice is one-dimensional.

Hailey, once again, did not quite get that, Patsy Cline on Idol...don't think so, she has been struggling for a while and it might be the end.

Winner prediction (subject to change next week): Pia - some may disagree, like me, but I'm predicting where the votes will go and America has a history of picking some more 'generic' winners. I would take James but hey, I'm a rocker.

Eh. One person's generic is another person's brilliant. Just like one person's edgy or original is another person's cliched and boring.

I think "one dimentional" is a perfect description of Paul's singing.

Scotty is getting uninteresting, fast, to me. His voice is amazingly rich and thick, like barbecue sauce, but you have to do more than just stand like a statue. Either they have to let him break out his guitar and we'll see if that gives him more personality, onstage, or else he has to do something other than sing ballads.

Missaddicted Etalk had Marie Mai on their show today!

Cool! What did they talk about? I know her album was certified platinum (in Canada) yesterday.

Oh, my god, this show is endless. .

It really was! It probably didn't help that I watched Casey three times and James twice. They were definitely my two favorite of the night.

I love that you put Jimmy Iovine in your review like that as if he was a contestant ross, LOL.

Lauren: I thought it was really mediocre. Also, her personality grates. I tried to be understanding of her acting as if she was 10 (oh, she's just 16, give her a chance), but then I thought that I certainly didn't act that childish at 16, so she went back to being annoying. Did you guys notice that she was tearing up while Ryan was reading her number? And the judges weren't even that tough with her.

Casey: I loved it. LOVED it. It made me giddy. I really loved everything about it. And he's such a likeable dude.

Ashthon: I thought she sounded terrible. Or else, I just really really dislike her singing.

Paul: I did enjoy the vocals, but the dancing was indeed super creepy. I wish he could have done that with his guitar. The dance moves have got to go. Stat.

Pia: I have a lot of respect for Céline and everything, but sorry Pia, I don't need another Céline. Pia's a really good singer and a very likeable girl, but if that's the music she wants to make, I certainly won't be on board.

James: Okay, I admit I'm doing a complete 180 on James compared to what I thought about him earlier. Last week was really fun, but I loved what he did tonight. Very controlled and everything, very heartfelt. And yes, he's very likeable. I almost wish he would use his lovely middle register more. My favorite part of his song were the last two lines where it was really soft and beautiful.

Haley: I have to say it wasn't a bad as I thought it was going to be. It was okay.

Jacob: I don't get it. Honestly, there's nothing I find remotely interesting in his singing or song choices or whatever.

Thia: If Lauren acts younger than her age, Thia almost acts older. She just screams pageant princess to me, honestly. Her voice is pleasant, but I don't feel anything from her when she sings. I find her very rehearsed if that makes sense.

Stefano: I wasn't really feeling that tonight. It may have been the weird, unpleasant dance beat though.

Karen: Not a fan. At all.

Scotty: Well, it's Scotty, he's quite predictable. And boring. I understand his appeal, but it's really not for me.

Naima: She probably sounds better than Rihanna live, so that's a plus, and I applaud her effort at bringing lots of energy, but I thought she sounded pretty bad.

I think Ashthon could be in danger tomorrow night.

When I say generic I have to look at the final 2 over the last few years. When given the options of Blake, Adam & Crystal (all were a little off the mainstream, were different from the rest which is very marketable) they chose instead Jordan, Chris & Danny....safe and generic.

Anyway, its better to finish second in my opinion. You are not to the Idol producers for 2 years and can go into the market on your own.

YouTube - Kris Allen Meet n Greet

^A video of Kris, and people who won passes to meet Kris, in Hawaii.(I'll have to listen to it in work, tomorrow. Must. bring. earphones.) And he had a few comments about this Top 13 round of Idol. American Idol: 13 finalists battle

Even positive comments can mess with you though...

What do you mean? Not sure I get it. Please elaborate. :) I admire your empathy for these kids. I guess we'll see what happens. Some people are surprisingly thick skinned, after all - it may not bother them or affect them as much as you think. Then again, it may.

Actually, that's not true. Blake was also signed by the 19 team. They did a quick album, he got no promotion and his career didn't really go anywhere. Adam and Crystal are also signed by 19. They are not on their own, they have similar contracts as the winners do.

The last two winners were Kris and Lee. Not Chris and Danny. And I don't find anything either safe or generic about Kris.

It's spelled "Kris".

Adam was the favorite of the producers, the judges, the media, Rolling Stone - he was the teachers' pet. So how is that unsafe? It takes balls to sing Kanye with an acoutic guitar and no band on Top 3 night. Kris is probably the least typical idol winner in all the seasons, so to me he was an offbeat choice. He was the outsider who won it all. Not the safe choice at all. The other two seasons, I guess I don't know, don't care. Maybe someone else can figure those out.

PS. Tomorrow we get to hear Cook's boot song! I'm excited because due to my computer woes I haven't even heard it yet.

Isn't Kane a wrestler...that would take balls to sing....

Lauren: I also thought this was mediocre. The judges said that she "doesn't realize her potential", but I certainly don't see it. And I did notice she was put on the fake tears while Ryan read the number. Give it up sister cuz I ain't buying it!

Casey: I get super excited when this guy comes on, he's got such an old timey jazzy thing going on. I thought his performance was really good, but did ween a little in some parts. Good show though!

Ashthon: I don't remember who this is and I just watched the show 2 hours ago. That's how horrible she is.

Paul: Dancing is really weird and it annoys me. Either he's a really awful dancer or he thinks attempts at being "quirky" will attract voters to him. His voice is cool, but c'mon man, RYAN ADAMS?? Sing me something I know, something that rocks and reminds what an awesome song it is. How bout some BRYAN ADAMS? He's got the voice for it...
Pia: I really like this contestant. She seems to be a very humble and kind person. She's pretty and has an outstanding voice. I would like to hear her sing something a little bit more up tempo though...

James: Loved it! Very entertaining to watch! Glad to see the stupid tail thing is gone. If he keeps picking songs like that, and raises the bar for himself with each performance, he'll be in the top 3 guaranteed.

Haley: Ho-hum...boring....C'mon blow me away! This is your chance and you didn't do it...sorry.

Jacob: I'm rooting for the guy, but I can see how he is quite a bit over the top. He needs much less vibrato and more concentration and control over the song.

Thia: She's a good singer but once again I don't recognize the song. That usually makes it boring for me. She seems like a nice girl, if she is around next week I hope she sings something more well known.

Stefano: I'm rooting for this guy as well but I don't think this was his best performance.

Karen: Another forgettable performance unfortunately. She has yet to impress me this year.

Scotty: I *love* country music and this guy is ruining it for me! He's not as good as Garth and it showed tonight! It was like a little boy trying to sing a man's song. He's gotta step out of the box and sing something else. Since something that challenges his voice more. This was a really boring performance I thought.

Naima: I missed this performance because my roommate started talking to me. Doesn't sound like I missed much.

Casey, James, Pia are my faves. That's it. Okay maybe Stefano too...I like his story. :)

Scotty will win . He always has the top Dial Idol score which means that he already has a big fanbase...And we know that country music fans are loyal.

Hey, nice to see everybody. Thanks for the recaps, SleepinIn, missaddicted, PoliticalNick, and alleywayzalwayz.

CapsuleNeo - who knows? You may be right, but it's like Danny Gokey always being ahead on DialIdol in the early rounds. I haven't looked at DialIdol this year. Thanks for reminding me. Scotty doesn't seem to have a lot of range as a performer, you know? People may get tired of him. In my nightmares I'm envisioning a Pia-Scotty finale. Just because the type of singing would not be to my liking.

Alley - Was it Thea who sang "Smile"? That's from the movie, Modern Times (1936). Charlie Chaplin wrote, directed, produced, starred, and composed the music! It's a great movie with a lot of laughs.

YouTube - Modern Times - The factory scene

AOL linked to something about Pia this morning. I think she's going to attract a lot of attention.

Pia Toscano Shows Off Her 'Natural Gift' on 'American Idol' (VIDEO)

ETA: As someone pointed out on the Top Idol blog, having these producers supervise or create arrangements, from the get-go, means that, along with limited use of instruments, the singers are also not allowed to do their own arrangements, this season.

So - limited instruments, limited or no arranging. Do you think they are trying to make sure the audience doesn't vote for a certain type of contestant this season?

See Moser question why Lambert is on AI. See Glamberts get defensive.

Yeah, if I had to bet right now, I'd also bet on Scotty to win it all. I'm hoping people get tired of him though, I don't think he's versatile at all.

ross, I guess when they meet with the producers, they are allowed to give their input on the kind of arrangement they would like to do. But it's possible that some/most of them feel that the producers know what's the best thing to do and don't dare question them. I don't think either Thia or Stefano would have chosen these weird arrangements last night if it had only been up to them.

I bought James and Casey's iTunes recordings. I love Casey's, I'll listen to it for sure. But while I loved James' performance last night, he sounds really shrieky in the recording. I currently have a headache and let's say that listening to James' song twice didn't make it go away.

There were some great performances last night. I like the new format without Simon but it seems the judges are way too kind to the contestants. J Lo just radiates beauty. Can't keep my eyes off her. Stephen Tyler is too busy playing up the rock star image. Randy tries to offer up constructive criticism but ends up getting all syrupy again at the end. It's the kinder, gentler American Idol.

How much influence do you think all those producers have on the show? Fellows like Don Was know a good thing when they see it. I would guess they follow those contestants very closely and are always on the lookout for their next meal ticket....er, client.

I love Slezak. I really really do:

Wednesday night’s telecast was hawd foh Wittle Wauren. She hads to go first instead of last, and that was tewwible for huh. She was just twying to have a good time with Shania’s “Any Man of Mine.” She could have done a bawwad like [get ready for a subtle dig at the competition] five of the other girls, but she wanted the night to start off more like “last call” at the karaoke bar! Why do those mean judges say mean things? It’s not vewwy nice. Wauren is going to make a stank-eye at Steven. And there’s one for you, J.Lo! Now Wauren is going to stamp her feet and refuse to go to bed! That’ll show you, you meanies!

Danny had a sob story and got many pity votes in the early rounds. Scotty doesn't have a sob story, but he is popular because he has a solid country voice that appeals to many country music fans.

I remember that Moser wrote an article titled "Why is 'Idol' winner Kris Allen an opening act while runner-up Adam Lambert headlines?" and Kris fans got pissy .
