I'm going to critique, live, a bit.
Lauren Alaina. I think I saw this at the local karaoke bar. She doesn't have a bad voice. "You have an amazing voiice," says JLo. Well, I don't think that's necessarily true. But she definitely needs work on a lot of things. I wouldn't vote for her at this point. She seems real and natural, anyhow. Anyhow, I already forgot this performance.
Casey Abrams. In the Kris Allen memorial performance slot. (In Top 13 they're already breaking out the grand staircase? Okay, whatever.) Pros: He brings it every time. He's no shrinking violet. He seems to be enjoying himself and it's infectious. He has magnetism and vitality. Cons: His voice. Doesn't really sound like a recording artist, to me. He'll probably win, and good luck with that.
Ashton Jones. She has a fairly pretty voice with some vulnerability to it. Sounded nervous. Sounds a bit like JLo (not a good thing). Pretty good. Better bring it, next time, if she doesn't want to go home.
Paul McDonald. I don't really get him. I think he's one of those artists who appeal almost totally to one sex (that sex being, the female sex). He doesn't sing with any balls at all.
Jimmy Iovine: Don't his comments sound exactly like every mentor who ever mentored on this show?Thought it would be something more innovative/interesting. Instead it's more like they just saved money on expensive, famous mentors by hiring just one.
PIa. Objectively, I have to say she has a big, really good singing voice. Not gorgeous, but powerful. I also have to say she doesn't care at all about what she's saying, as if the song has no meaning whatever. If you don't think so, watch it again and tell me I'm crazy. I like big voices pretty well, if the person also has a lot of emotional involvement with what they're singing. I like (a lot) that she sings it straight, pure, not a lot of runs and muck like that. I just wish I was moved, or involved, or something, instead of feeling like I'm looking at the Statue Of Liberty singing.
James Durbin. Paul McCartney is his idol. Props for that. He's very relaxed, which I love. He feels it, which I like alot, too. Sounded like Adam, at times. But he has a mellower tone. I liked him better last week just because he was more fun, but he nailed the song and brought a lot of variety to the vocal. Also, he's really likable.
Haley Reinhart. I guess it was good. I wouldn't listen to that kind of music if you paid me.
Jacob Lusk. I guess it was good. I wouldn't listen to that kind of music if you paid me. So overblown, wasn't it? Okay, okay, I know you can sing loud. And high. But can you sing good?
Thia. It's sad people don't even know who Charlie Chaplin is now, or that he wrote this music. Didn't someone sing this last year? What was her name? Paige? I like her. Why push and push a song? Nice interpretation, though she didn't really have to get loud.
Oh, my god, this show is endless. .
Stefano Langone has an odd singing style. Maybe I'll get used to it. Sounds rather strangulated. He sings pretty good - not my style. I don't know who sings like this on the radio - maybe Jesse McCartney Throbbing disco-ish backing track on this one, eh? He did well, for what it is. I'm pretty narrow-minded, I guess, Sorry. I like the Kris or Jacob or Kalan type, non-slick.
Karen Rodriguez: Sweet girl, very old fashioned Idol singing.
Scotty McCreery. This is as good a time as any to mention that this year Idol doesn't seem like Idol to me, so much as a David Foster special on PBS. Why that is, I'm not sure. Maybe because there is no spontaneity? I don't know. It's not live, after all. It happened yesterday. I'd critique him more, but basically he sounded the same as he sounded last week, and the same as he's goiing to sound next week.
And Naima Adedapo. Not even a critique of that outfit? Where's Simon? Well, that was different.
No instruments, again.
