Yay for AWM mention in EW. I love that song so much.

Oh well, at least we got rid of...you know...what's her face....

We'll always have Ashton :) Bye Bye Ashton and your off key singing and annoying tweets about everything. Though I'm still getting those on my twitter list come to think of it. I think I might vote her off my list too.

Casey being sick again is a problem. I read he has a stomach-bleeding problem when he's under stress. Last time he needed a transfusion, right? So he must be aware it happens, but he auditioned anyway. Now he has to deal with it. Will TPTB want to deal with an Idol who may get sick the night of Top 2, or not make the finale? Or who would miss a lot of the tour?

Yeah that's a problem. I wonder if they learned anything last year from dealing with Crystal and her health issues. But when they're going into live shows that have to happen on schedule. It's going to be problematic. I don't want to lose Casey though since I kinda love him.

ETA: In a way, I like that he wants people to discover "better" music than what airs on top 40 radio stations and such. I mean, I hate popular music that's on the radio right now and I like that he prefers more indie artists and I would probably have way more musical tastes in common with him than any others in the top 13. But I don't think that using the "I'm too cool for school" way of trying to get people to listen to him music or music similar to what he's doing is a smart thing to do right now. I don't think judging the audience (and again, I'm pretty sure a good part of the AI audience embraces different types of music *waves*) you're trying to impress is the good way to do things right now.

I had a problem with his I want to introduce people to better music spiel, and in some ways it reminded me of Oliver on CI. I loved this performance of his, but it didn't really play on Idol for a lot of people.

YouTube - Oliver Pigott - I Hear You Knockin' (But You Can't Come In)

When you say you don't watch the show then you really have no idea what music is being played on the show. They sing a lot of good music on this show.. sometimes they sing it really badly... but sometimes it's amazing. When you're going into top 13 you have to be aware that the audience doesn't know you very well (unless you are named Lauren and were 15!). You've got to play to the masses early, wait until the audience is rooting for you to bust out that obscure cover or go crazy because unless you are drop dead amazing they will wonder what the hell you were thinking.

I'm hoping Paul finds his centre because he was one of my faves after Hollywood week and I'd really hate to lose him early. And I agree this week is really crucial for him.

It's interesting...why did Paul's spiel remind you of Oliver's little self-destructive number on CI? (Because both things were early in the competition, and were turn-offs?) Wrong thing at the wrong time in the wrong place. But ultimately (similar to Adam's AMAs performance) I think that if the performance were great, if the singing were incredible - a lot of things would have been overlooked. If you're undeniably brilliant, and/or incredibly likable, you can get away with so much. Not that Oliver isn't - he just wasn't, that time. Maybe if he had smiled he would have looked less like he was going to molest someone. lol

It's true you have to play the game that way. Absolutely. I never gave it much thought, I admit.

Staying in the game is all that matters. Last week, he sounded pretty awful. Thinking back over the past couple seasons, most winners, or people who get far in the competition, never really sound that bad, any time in the competition. Many viewers vote not just for individual performances but for your whole output. Like, Kris won because of Heartless. That's impossible unless he was consistently good prior to Heartless. If Paul wants to go far he can't afford another performance like last week's.

(I also don't think he was dressed well last week. I mean, he looked like he was trying to be Chris Martin or something; it was affected, to me.)

I have a feeling - if you look at this round, traditionally - the people who end up going far just establish some kind of foothold at this early point, that has to do with making you not hate them. Like, I keep thinking of Stefano, for some reason. I kind of think that about Thia, also. I just think some people have that quality - on TV the camera likes them and the viewers like them, and they can sing, too. That's enough, right now. Like you said, basically.

Wrong thing at the wrong time in the wrong place.

That's it exactly. At this point in time the main thing IMHO that they have to do is build good will and yes. Not suck. Momentum is a funny thing on Idol it swings both ways, and you never really know what will cause the shift.

Like Kris's All She Wants to Do is Dance - he was so lost in that pit so I was really worried about that night. He didn't sound bad though.

Haven't watched this in awhile :)
YouTube - Kris Allen - All She Wants To Do Is Dance

Okay, Kris was always awesome. Snarky Kris :) Just never, ever in a pit again. That is a bad, bad idea.

I'm unable to listen to it right now, but I remember funk, utilizing brass. Maybe too much of a concept; ambitious. Big band, electric guitar, and the pit - all in 90 seconds. (At the time, I wondered why he did the pit. Little did I know how he likes to go into the audience.)

This number reminds me of She Works Hard For The Money, in a way. Re-imagining the genre based on the song's rhythm. Like Jacob doing the reggae Gunnin' - musicality.

Blog critic The Other Chad seems to know his Idol music. http://www.seattlepi.com/pop/437027_154783-blogcritics.org.html?source=rss

Not Chris Torres in David Cook's video.

catalm Oh, I asked LJ if he was collaborating with David Cook and he said that not, but heard of guy on vid who looked like him, lol
7 minutes ago via web

(LJ = Torres.)

I was listening to Bruno Mars' Just The Way You Are on the radio today and I heard the lyric, "When I see your face, there's not a thing that I would change" - a false rhyme. The later lines do rhyme - "And when you smile, the whole world stops and stares for awhile" So I thought - it must have been really hard to find a rhyme. No, wait: "When I see your face, there's not a thing that I'd replace." Or, "there's not a thing I would replace." Well - just a thought.

Leave Bruno alone - he's awesome. :) He'd catch a grenade for her. You know what that would do to a person? He wouldn't be able to catch another one. It's a one shot deal.

I adore that song. The end.

and I think I ruled out Chris working with David after the second behind the scenes thing for that song. The first thing really looked liked Torres, the second really didn't. Oh, well. He heard.. tho.. Chris paying attention to rumours :D

Just saying...face...replace...would that not even cross your mind? Okay, guess I'll have to stop. :p

After my last post I was looking at a blog post about Bruno and they said this:

"Beautiful girls, all over the world, i could be chasing but my time would be wasted" - his lyrics are so talentless it’s not even worth listening to.

Sorry - I kinda have to agree. But, wow, you really like Bruno. So, I won't comment on the grenade song, then. (I didn't know that was also him!) I just turn it off whenever it comes on, tbh. I'm not a big pop fan, anyhow, so take it from whence it comes, I guess. :) We will consider this subject closed. lol

I sorta like him, too, at times, tho. (Other times, I kind of resent all pop stars who make their songs stick in my head against my will. lol)

I told you guys I didn't think that looked anything like Torres in Cook's video. Well, he had the hairstyle down, I have to admit.

Bruno wrote a ton of my favourite song (even songs I loved that others sang) K'naan's Wavin Flag (Jacob was in the charity version) Bang Bang with Adam Levine and K'naan, and then Bruno's cd which I loved. if they're going to overplay pop songs I prefer Bruno to Katy - I'm Fireworked out. :)

I agree Kris and Cale and Torres sounded amazing. I loved that version of BWCU, and AWM...SQUEE.

1. Arthur should never be remade.

2. Lil Rounds was pitchy tonight. Oh, wait, that was Naima.

3. Paul's mom is Shelley Long?

4. Alex Lambert never made it out of the Top 24, and Paul is getting praised by Steven Tyler. It's a cruel world. He has a cold but I couldn't really tell the difference. I don't think it matters.

5. Thia has a really beautiful voice, and I respond to it, but this is a great song if you want to end up singing on the soundtrack of Disney movies (not actually a bad job). But her voice is quite lovely, imho. I mean, so much better than a lot of the girls last season who hung around way too long.

5. I'm sure Jimmy Iovine is a great producer but what does he say to the contestants that you or I couldn't say? I'm not hearing a lot of interesting points, or wisdom. And, unfortunately, with no mentors this year, the singers will never be mentored by a singer. (Such as Anne Murray - my favorite mentor of all time.)

6. James Durbin convo. Ryan to Kate Hudson: "I gotta get you better seats..." (...because you are a celeb, unlike the rest of these peons, who have to take what they can get. And I am a celeb of sorts who kisses celeb ass.) Why did Durbin point to his ring? - he's not married. I'll Be There For You. I don't know if he's also sick, but that didn't sound good at all. Sorry, James. The judges liked it, surprisingly. Or maybe, not surprisingly.

7. Best season ever, ever, ever??? Um...let's see...

8. No? Just a guess.

9. Hailey. I don't know what to say about that. I've never liked her very much...

11. Stefano makes me sad because I thought (hoped) this kind of singing would not be heard again on American Idol (or anywhere) in my lifetime. He's really good - best performance - I can objectively say - so far - but not really my style.

12. Pia.

13. I want to ask you guys: was Idol this dull, back when there were no instruments? Scotty was good, he always sounds the same. I don't need to hear him any more because I don't like country and he doesn't do anything different, so why not just show a tape of last week's performance?

14. Who is this? I forget her name. This is like a festival of old-fashioned ballads. I can't really take it, so I'm going to go get something to eat in the kitchen....

15. Casey. How old did he say his parents are? his mother looks @39. I guess instruments are allowed. Not that you can hear it. I don't think this is good - I don't think he's good. Nope.

16. And then there's the chick who looks like Blair from The Facts Of Life, and then Jacob oversinging.

Okay, so I guess Stefano and Thia would be my favorites this week, I don't know.

Jimmy sounds like the godfather or something.

Naima - looks good, stage presence good, sounded shaky vocally to me - Steven - you gotta step up baby - that wasn't good. j-lo you are right it was pitchy....Randy thanks for giving Jen some positive feedback.

Jen gets a cookie, no cookie for S-Ty

Paul - Paul no. No cowboy outfit. No. Don't do it. Resist the urge to overdress. I think I might be stepping off the Paul train. I want to see him with an instrument though so America please vote him through. Audience loved it, I don't think I felt the same. Swagger is good, he does have a distinct voice not sure I felt it though. I want to hear the studio version.

Thia - Thia and Matt need to meet so they can bond over Disney. LOL - I thought it was safe and boring, but her voice was good, it just kind of put me to sleep.

Crystal commercial with BB King! It's nice to see her.

James and his doll, lol - I can't even. Too cute.

The tail is back! Meh. Seriously, why that song? The audience loved it, I feel meh about it. Didn't sound horrible, but kinda meh for me. Less fashion more singing.

Haley - well she's in tune - I want to like Haley more than I do actually. I think there's something there, but I haven't seen it yet.

For the best group Evah in Idol history they are kinda sucking the life and soul out of me.

Stefano - please don't suck.

Simply Red is a good choice, lmao at him dissing the other songs. I loved it, he sounded really good and added his own touches to a good song. Best of the night for me. (don't know that I'd buy it though.. :/ )

Pia - Dear Pia, pick a more boring song I dare you. you're definitely in tune, but so pagenty ..I'm really bored with this. I think you need to go more up-tempo than this, just sayin'. Can't fault her vocals at all tho.

Scotty - He still reminds me of Jaydee....and now they bring Elvis into it? Brothers from another mother. I'm weirded out by that to be honest, LOL. He has good stage presence. Lot of potential there.

Karen - Karen's mom is sweet. Pitchy dawg at beginning. Got stronger, but not all that for me.

Casey's parents are over 60?!? They don't look it at all. I can see why he's an old soul.

CASEY. Lights AND electric bass. Hello musical instruments. Angry works for this song, will the idol audience follow I don't know? I'm not sure that they will - but I will. :) did get a bit screechy. But for that song, I liked it. And for someone who was in the hospital all week pretty much.. it worked for me.

Randy mentioned Muse... Matthew Bellamy in audience....they didn't mention him.. sitting by Kate Hudson.. Ahem.. musician.. *cough*

[So Paul could have played an instrument tonight and didn't...he should have]

Lauren - too much cough syrup? What are you on girl? She's a powerhouse. And super annoying as only a 16 year old can be. She does look like Blair tho, doesn't she??? She was really good tho.

Jacob - Vibrating voice...no. No no no. Rather listen to Casey scream teen spirit to be honest. He just doesn't do it for me. Love his mom tho, lol.

And the mention of Lee for tomorrow it's nice that Lee got more screams than the Black Eyed Peas :D

My Top 3 Stefano, Casey, Pia

Going home.. Haley? Hmm, gonna think on that one. Maybe Karen?

Yeah, that was nice! I guess both his fans were there tonight. (j/k) Actually, he got a better response than anyone Ryan has announced so far this season. *cough.* I would love to see Lee have a hit. I mean, I'm not his most ardent fan - or even his fan - but I like surprises like that. I always like to see all the know-it-alls proven wrong. The "poor Lee" types, you know.

Angry works for this song

But can you dance to it?

He's daring - but that only goes so far, for me. I think that was kind of unformed and sloppy. Yeah, he was in the hospital. Maybe he'll be better next week.

Thia - Thia and Matt need to meet so they can bond over Disney.

lol, true!

LOL - I thought it was safe and boring, but her voice was good, it just kind of put me to sleep.

But. You know, don't you? Haven't you heard? She's only 16!! So none of that matters. :)

Same. I haven`t even listened to his new single tho, maybe I`ll do that so I can be judgey about it tomorrow. :D

That's true. It won't give him a free pass forever, but it's nice to see them take major risks, even if they don't always work out the way they want them to. Given all that, I really did enjoy it, and will buy it, so very big point for Casey.
Plus I love that song. :) Point for taste.

Stefano was really, really good, but I'm on the fence about buying it. Probably not. (I'm just gonna go ahead and make my own donation to Japan I think, lol)

Enjoy!! 10th Anniversary’ CD shows recent Idols have feet of clay

Stefano was good, but not good. I mean, he has a good voice. Kind of lacking in tone, but good. Still, when Pia sang after he did, I thought, "this sounds the same." Old fashioned. Didn't he turn the Stevie Wonder tune into a big number? And now he does it to If You Don't Know Me By Now. I guess every song can be converted into a big Sefano vocal. But I don't necessarily think it's in the best interest of the song. Eh, I don't know. Hard to say, yet. I'll give him time, I guess. He confuses me with his choices.

The music made between 1984 and 1995 was really bad right? I definitely give points to Casey for song choice. It at least proves that not all music from that period was bad. Two Whitney songs, really? Oh, and thanks Idols for making me feel old. It's the first year where they're all younger than me. Boo.

1. Naima: Pretty much the only thing I remember is that she didn't sound good.

2. Paul: I'm pretty much off the Paul train right now. He'll have to win me back some way. It just wasn't good. I espected so much better from this dude, I'm very disappointed.

3. Thia: Baby Thia was adorable. Also, Pocahontas was one of my favorite Disney movies as a kid, so I have a soft spot for that song. But I don't find anything special about Thia's voice and I can't help but think Pageant Bot/Princess when I see her perform, so she gets a big "meh" for me.

4. James: I like the kid, he's fun and he has good stage presence, plus he doesn't use the high-pitched notes too much, but he just didn't sound that great. A big "meh" as well.

5. Haley: I guess she's a competent singer. But really the only thing I remember from her performance is asking myself whether it was fashionable to wear your leggings over your shirt or if it should really be the other way around only. Option 2 is my conclusion based on Haley's outfit.

6. Stefano: Well sung, the guy has great pipes for sure. But that song, ugh!!! So cheesy and uninteresting.

7. Pia: Oh, Pia, Pia, Pia. I'd like to root for you so much (since I think you're going far in this competition and you're a likeable girl), but you're making it so hard. Céline, then Whitney? Please, don't say so. Oh, and J.Lo that was not an uptempo song, that was an almost-midtempo song. I need something else from Pia and quick. Lastly, Pia, don't ever EVER wear that ugly white jumpsuit again. Ever.

8. Scotty: Oh well, it's Scotty. I've learned not to expect anything else than a boring country song from him.

9. Karen: Her singing = zzzzz. Her outfit = wtf? Seriously, the girls were just awfully dressed tonight.

10. Casey: OH! An instrument! I didn't remember what an instrument looked like! Okay, okay, this was certainly not the best thing ever (and I'd especially love to hear Casey just sing, not growl, or scream, or whatever), but I <3 Casey, beyond reason. I'd get along so well with this guy in real life, I have no doubt about this.

11. Lauren: Everything about this girl is so mediocre to me. I don't see a spark, a unique quality, anything.

12. Jacob: NO. Just no. You hurt my ears Jacob. Sorry.

*Sigh* There's no way this is the best season EVAH.

Okay, I have to add something this morning. The producers the contestants work with are responsible for a lot of the music on the radio right now, right? After witnessing the horrible arrangements the producers give to the contestants, it helps understand why popular music is crap right now (sorry SleepinIn, I know you love some of the pop songs on the radio!). Seriously, the arrangements of the songs the contestants did were awful.

I always have a "fave" by now in the competition and I truly don't have one this year :?. I find most of them annoying. Did James say he's saving an Aerosmith song for the "finale"? He already comes across as cocky as hell.

I think he meant as a duet for the finale. I think he just wanted to express his desire to perform with Steven at the finale. They always do some duets between the contestants and some famous singers during the finale. I don't think he meant he wanted to do an Aerosmith song at the final 2 performance show, just that he wanted to perform with Steven.

Thanks for the reviews. I was busy working last night so didn't actually watch but could hear it in the other room. I wanted to check the sound on our TV because none of it sounded great last night. From the reviews it would seem my TV is just fine, whew.
