Farmers in Manitoba, Canada’s third-largest pork producing province, are scrambling to contain a mysterious outbreak of a rapidly spreading virus that’s deadly to piglets and threatens to harm their industry.
There are 51 pork operations dealing with porcine epidemic diarrhea, up from about 40 at the end of last month, said Andrew Dickson, general manager of the Manitoba Pork Council.
“It caught us off-guard,” Dickson said Monday.
“We had a total of 10 cases in three years, so that’s what’s throwing us off for a loop ... What happened this year that we’ve suddenly got 50?”
He said the virus has so far been contained to about a half-hour’s drive radius surrounding Steinbach, southeast of Winnipeg, and farmers are doing what they can — including reviewing biosecurity measures, equipment and clothing — to stop it from spreading.
Although it doesn’t pose a threat to human health or food, porcine epidemic diarrhea is almost always fatal for pigs under three weeks of age due to dehydration.
Dickson said trucks that ship swine to the U.S. used to have to be cleaned in Manitoba, where he says the process is more thorough than it is south of the border. But that requirement has been lifted, and he believes that may be a possible cause behind the outbreak.
“I’m not going to say it’s caused all of them, but it doesn’t help knowing that some of these trailers may be coming back not clean, or been infected,” he said.
Dickson said he has called on the federal government to put the requirement back in place and is hopeful it’s listening. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
The province and industry have set up buffer zones around the affected farms and created a disease management group to share information and co-ordinate efforts.
According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the first confirmed case of the virus in Canada was in January 2014, in Ontario, just as an outbreak swept through the U.S., killing more than eight million piglets.
Since then, the virus has also been reported in Quebec and Prince Edward Island.

Nova Scotia farmer offers bacon for tips after power tool theft at his operation

CROOKS BROOK, N.S. — The owner of a free-range animal farm in Nova Scotia has taken the unusual step of offering bacon as an incentive for information about two major thefts from his property this summer.
In an appeal posted on Facebook, Melvin Burns of Moo Nay Farms in Crooks Brook offered a reward of just over two kilograms of bacon for tips leading to the culprit who took about $1,000 worth of power tools.
Burns says the farm near Shubenacadie was also hit in June when someone stole a number of pigs and hens.
He is also offering the odd job around the farm or training for anyone who owns up to the thefts — saying that if someone is taking things out of need, he is willing to provide an opportunity to make money in an honest way.
Burns says the purpose behind his post is to send a message to the broader community about looking out for one another.
He says he doesn’t believe his farm is being targeted because he’s learned of a rash of recent thefts in the area.

Fire destroyed a barn and killed the estimated 4,000 pigs inside it Wednesday evening in Warwick Township.
Watford firefighters were called out just before 8 p.m. to the blaze on Arkona Road and Chief Rick Sitlington said firefighters from the Warwick and Arkona stations were called in to assist. Fire departments in Kerwood and Alvinston helped supply water.
In total, at least 50 firefighters were involved through the evening and Watford firefighters returned to the station around midnight, Sitlington said.
All the pigs inside the barn were killed, he said.
Thursday morning, there was “just a little bit of smoke” still visible at the site, Sitlington said.
The barn was a total loss, estimated at more than $1 million, he said.
The fire's cause wasn't determined as of Thursday morning.
Sitlington said the owner's insurance company is expected to send in an investigator, and the Ontario Fire Marshal's office has been consulted.
No one was injured, and there wasn't a house near the barn.
“This was all by itself down a side road that nobody lives on,” Sitlington said.
He believes the owners of the barn called after seeing the fire from where they live at the corner of Confederation Line and Arkona Road, a kilometre or more away.
The barn walls were a combination of cement and steel, and Sitlington said he believes it was built in 1998.
Sitlington said he plans to join the insurance company investigator in an attempt to determine the cause, once they're able to access the site.
Lambton OPP said Arkona Road, from Confederation Line to Zion Line, was closed while the fire was being fought.

Most of us like either "Side bacon" or "back bacon". Bacon is only related to ham in that they both come from a pig.. Back bacon is made from the cured and smoked pork tenderloin.
I don't know any Canadians who refer to "Canadian bacon" as Canadian bacon.

Glad to hear from you Juan, stick around, a lot of the sensible posters are jumping ship! I like all bacon but I don't think my doctor does! Can't really afford back bacon, I guess it's what some would call living a little "high on the hog".

I even use it instead of regular bacon for flavor when making home-made beans,
