There is something here. Remember, none of the opposition wanted to change the anthem but all of a sudden Harper rides in on his steed declaring that the anthem wouldn't be changed. Big hero right? Wrong! It was a bad card trick....

Anyone who learned to read and write prior to the politically correct, liberal, unionized so-called "teachers" taking over the education system and turned it into INDOCTRINATION, knows that "sons" means "children" just as "man" means "mankind or humanity".

It is only the feeble-minded, politically correct (pardon the redundancy) nitpickers who have problem with that.

YOu got that right Y.J..........

WE don't care how he came to the right conclusion, just that he got to it. Every time I see that Ignatieff on the idiot box, I just thank my lucky stars Harper is the P.M.

That is how it should work YJ, but many times it doesn’t. If something specifically states ‘men’ or ‘mankind’, that is a ready made excuse to discriminate against women.

Indeed, that is the reason why these days inclusive, gender neutral language is used as much as possible. Also instead of wife or husband, they say ‘partner’ these days (to include the unmarried couples and gays). The advantaged group will use every ruse to discriminate against the disadvantaged groups in the society.

Harper introduced the threat to our anthem and announced that the government would look into it. None of the opposition wanted to change it. so this whole business was Harper making a situation where the country could be saved by Harper from himself. Should have said stupid card trick. Harper should stop having those monthly lunches with Mulroney.

I suppose with Mulroney's pal back in Germany "attending to business"- there' s not much of a chance now of Mulroney going to jail in the near future??????????

People very much care JLM, that is why gender neutral language is used almost exclusively these days. Now, maybe to you, anybody who disagrees with you has a 4th grade mentality (and 4th grade? Aren't you being a bit soft on those who disagree with you?), but many people do have problem with exclusivist language (exclusivist language is meant to exclude people)and that is why gender neutral language (or sexual orientation neutral language, like using partner insted of husband or wife) is the norm these days.

Really? Then you must not live in Canada, you probably live in Saudi Arabia. In Canada, gender neutral language is the norm almost everywhere, in politics, in schools, in the press, on television, in the universities in the workplace etc.

Don't know where you live in Ontario, but thats not the case where I live...
I have never heard 'police person' or 'fire person' once on the tv news in Toronto. I really think you should be let out more...

No, but which do you hear, a policeman or a police officer? Gender neutral language does not mean replacing the word 'man' with 'person', many times that is not done. But an appropriate gender neutral word is used. Indeed, it is very rare for the press to refer to a police as a policeman these days, it almost always is police officer. Policeman is almost an anachronism these days.

Same with fire person. Do you hear fireman these days or a fire fighter?

It was announced by the PM's office that the anthem will not be changed. I'm glad. Tradition has to mean something!

I'm surprised actually....I expected there to be no change, but I thought the entire debate was something dreamed up by some genius of strategy in the PMO to deflect attention from deficits and Afghan detainees.....

I thought it would run much longer.

I know. I'm just cynical.

I am sure you're not serious.

Then surely it is not worth responding to, is it? Then why did you respond, if I am not serious?

As to using the word partner instead of husband or wife, that indeed is the case in many places these days. They may use the word spouse, rather than partner, but the idea is the same, to use gender neutral language.

A few years ago Ontario removed the words wife and husband from all its marriage laws and replaced them with the word ‘spouse’.
