National anthem is not something sacred, not something handed down by God, like Ten Commandments. It is just a song Canadians decided will be the national anthem.

I don’t see anything wrong with changing it. Societal attitudes have changed considerably since the anthem was adopted. If there is a consensus in adopting an alternate language, I say go for it.

A long time ago, a Conservative minister, Flora McDonald raised the same point; she took objection to the reference to the sons. At that time it went nowhere (though I do remember one radio DJ called on his listeners to phone in with alternatives, and many of them did).

I see nothing wrong in revisiting the issue and seeing if a reasonable alternative can be found.

Changing the national anthem is just plain stupid. This is Canada. We may be a melting pot but that doesn't mean we haven't already gone much too far to accomodate.
Has anyone else noticed that this thread began 3 years ago????

To be a bit more accurate, it's a tune that politicians decided would be the anthem.

Well the thread/debate is timely given the gov't has announced its intention to look at a gender neutral anthem.

As well, The "melting pot" is the USA's claim: we're supposed to be made up of hundreds of multicultural enclaves.

Yeah, let's just stand with a solemn expression on our face and sing the words, "Oh Canada" 14 times.

Official lyrics:

O Canada, our home and native land
True patriot love, in all our sons command
with glowing hearts we see thee rise
the true north strong and free
God keep our land, Glorius and free
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

Here is a PC version I found on the web that made me nearly cry:

Do you have a problem with our anthems current lyrics: Not at all. Not one bit. Leave it the way it is.

Does the:

native reference
"sons command" reference
God reference

upset you? That would be a resounding no, even though I am a female and not a christian.

I hope the lyrics NEVER change. I know this song by heart and I would not want it any other way.

Here! Here! I do agree.

The idea has been floating around for much longer than three years. Flora McDonald in Mulroney’s cabinet brought it up. If people discuss it long enough eventually there may well be a change.

Indeed, it is interesting that Conservatives brought it up. If anybody would oppose the idea, I would expect it to be the Conservatives. I expect Liberals and NDP will support changing the national anthem.

So if Conservatives are serious about it (and it was not just a throw away line), this time it may well happen.

Interesting that you even care West, considering your worship of all things American.

Be that what it may, this is such a non-issue. There are no plans to re-do the national anthem.

Uh, sorry sanctus, but there are plans underway to 'review' the national anthem as was announced in the throne speech in parliament yesterday. I in no way agree with this and hope we keep the anthem just the way it is. I do know it was changed in the past however, I do not see the necessity of doing it again.

Indeed. Our model is the mosaic, not the melting pot.

This is just Harper's way of claiming he is addressing women's issues without addressing women's issues.

Perhaps. But if Harper occasionally comes up with a good idea (and he has come up with very few good ideas, this is one of them), there is nothing that says that non conservatives cannot support it.
