This thread was going fine and fun till some Pius individual on bitter pills came and soured it up.

I think the anthem is fine, but all I know is, Oh Canada umm mumble blah... So they can make the words what they like maybe they could take out the mumbo jumbo thee and thou. You know, plain English or French, not that double meaning religo talk.

Jesus you canucks are soft. If you all tried this **** with my favorite tune the star spangled banner, you would end up full of holes dead in a ditch, I tell you what.
You all need to find a medic and have him asses if you need some nuts or find out if yours have dropped yet.
You keep bending to the ****ing wims of the fobs of the world and you all will be crying on our shoulders next.

I like the star-spangled banner....it goes on about our Global navy dominance and how we liked to use "Gunboat diplomacy" and basically bomb the crap outta the enemy......pesky french traitors

You're right Daz. I didn't really know all the words. Bit nasty in parts.

Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
'Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war's desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: "In God is our trust."
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Besides whats your point? This is your subtle way to annoy people? I've noticed its the ones that don't follow your faith that get your attention. Never saw you correct Maple leaf Girl cos one would think that you may be baised , nuff said....
You know for a priest you do alot of judgeing and stone throwing.
But somehow you'll find a way to say its not your fault......ya ya ya

Well, in an attempt at communication, wouldn't you agree it helps to ensure people understand what you mean?

I correct Maple all the time. She just laughs. Do I correct her online? Nope, don't have to since she recently became a member of my parish. I see her all the time.

Next you'll be telling me how it was a rip off of some old limy bar tune. Don't bother. I've been schooled on that one already by some hard fighting limey marines. I love those limies bastards. Now all they got to do is wise up on the homefront and kick the **** out of those muzzy bastards in side the gates.
BTW what so wrong with bombing the **** of everything? Sometimes people won't listen to reason until they're kicked into submission.

I never knew there was that much of the Star Spangled Banner, weird, thanks for posting it..

And that story about God Save the Queen is pretty funny too, I can just imagine what it would be like to hear "bonus lyrics" to a song you'd been singing your whole life...

Which leads to my question- I remember, vaguely, that O Canada actually has a few more verses (NOT like from a beer commercial) Anyone here ever see anything like that- ahhh apparently it wasthe original poem which can be seen HERE

I SWEAR sometime in my public school years we had to sing that whole version once, we had it on sheet music-kinda interesting.

I always liked the French lyrics better, too, truly brilliant exploits INDEED :D

Fun thread!

OK, we got something here.

Here are the part we all know.

O Canada! Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee

En Francais,

Ô Canada! Terre de nos aVeux,
T on front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.

And now the part they can never sing at hockey games,

O Canada! Where pines and maples grow,
Great prairies spread and Lordly rivers flow!
How dear to us thy broad domain,
From East to Western sea!
The land of hope for all who toil,
The true North strong and free!
God keep our land, glorious and free.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

O Canada! Beneath thy shining skies,
May Stalwart sons, and gentle maidens rise.
To keep thee steadfast thro' the years,
From East to Western sea.
Our own beloved native land,
Our true North strong and free!
God keep our land, glorious and free.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!

Ruler supreme, who hearest humble prayer,
Hold our Dominion, in thy loving care.
Help us to find, O God, in thee,
A lasting rich reward.
As waiting for the better day,
We ever stand on guard.
God keep our land, glorious and free.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee

Canada, Glorious and free. :canada:

I've never heard of people wanting to change the anthem. Even if they did I would still sing the one I learned. Jeez I'm kinda young to be getting set in my ways.....

I just sing the words I learned - nobody is paying attention - they are all trying to remember which words are for the current year....lol

I enjoy the last two lines happen when everyone lets loose and hollers them....with a sigh of relief....

For me, the star-spangled banner represents what we SHOULD be doing to those Iranians. It just makes me laugh because I'm pretty sure if the Iranians chose US Navy personnel they'd get the same fate as the US Traitors/patriots/citizens did in that song....and no Giant Iranian flag would be waving to prove that they're still there.

Those US Warships arent there for no good reason you know?

The British would never meddle with their national anthem - the oldest one in the world.

And ours has the word "God" in the title.

I think the anthem is fine, but all I know is, Oh Canada umm mumble blah... So they can make the words what they like maybe they could take out the mumbo jumbo thee and thou. You know, plain English or French, not that double meaning religo talk.

The words "thee" and "thou" aren't religious words. They were a normal part of the English language spoken by everyone up until the 18th Century or so. Like other European languages to this day - such as French - there were several ways of saying "you" depending on whether it was singular or plural, informal or formal (French has tu/vous).

"Thou" (nominative) was the singular informal way to say "you", similar to the French "tu".

"Ye" (nominative) was the plural of "thou" and also the singular formal.

"Thee" (objective) was the singular informal way to say "you".

"You" (objective) was the singular formal way to say "you", similar to the French "vous", and also the plural of "thee".

"Thy/thine" (genitive) were the singular informal way to say "you", just like the genitive way to to say "my" in English is still "my/mine."

"Your" (genitive) was the plural of "thy/thine" and also singular formal.

These have now been dropped and only the formal "you" is used so, in a way, English is more polite than French. English has been much simplified since the old days when there were several ways just to say "you". But there are still a few places - like Yorkshire - where some people still use "thou, thee, thy, ye" etc.
