Frankly, I get tired of hearing about it. It was over 40 years ago. Big deal. I think we can celebrate Canada without whining about a stupid plane forever and a day.

Remembering and celebrating a part of our history and our innovations is far different from whining about them. I am proud of the contributions made by Canadians even when they are taken away from us by a wishy-washy PM under the influence of the US Defense Dept.

I never knew there was that much of the Star Spangled Banner, weird, thanks for posting it..

And that story about God Save the Queen is pretty funny too, I can just imagine what it would be like to hear "bonus lyrics" to a song you'd been singing your whole life...

Which leads to my question- I remember, vaguely, that O Canada actually has a few more verses (NOT like from a beer commercial) Anyone here ever see anything like that- ahhh apparently it wasthe original poem which can be seen HERE

I SWEAR sometime in my public school years we had to sing that whole version once, we had it on sheet music-kinda interesting.

I always liked the French lyrics better, too, truly brilliant exploits INDEED :D

Fun thread!

Great link, mabudon. Thank you. Had no idea that there were more lines to the poem/song. Still, I am glad that we shortened it to the current version. Though I like the Russian national anthem for its soaring choruses, I kept wondering if they would ever finish it and get on with the closing ceremonies.

I sincerely hope they will put it to a referendum. It would never pass. Canadians don't want the anthem changed.

I seriously doubt if there will be a referendum. And how do you know Canadians don't want it changed? Has there been an opinion poll about it?

I like that tune, too. (Lyrics by Sergey Mikhalkov and music by Alexander Alexandrov).

Wassa matter SJP? Are you the only one authorized to speak for others?

BTW.... Poll on the Forum is a fair indication.

Anyway, I think the gov't can find better things to waste our money on than changing the anthem.

I agree Anna though I give the gov credit for the move being conservative and all. It sure is getting good media play and that, I imagine, is one of the reasons they included it. Keep the patriotism alive with a national debate on changing our national anthem. Couldn't have used the timing for the announcement better as far as grabbing headlines. Way to go boys and girls!

I like the star-spangled banner....it goes on about our Global navy dominance and how we liked to use "Gunboat diplomacy" and basically bomb the crap outta the enemy......pesky french traitors

I hope you're being sarcastic here. Francis Scott Key wrote the words to the Star Spangled Banner as a poem while he was watching the British bombard Fort McHenry at Baltimore during the war of 1812.

It was announced by the PM's office that the anthem will not be changed. I'm glad. Tradition has to mean something!

Talk about stirring - whew! Kinds makes me want to grab a sickle, don a babushka and march out on the land!

You could probably harvest 40 acres of wheat while listening to that loooooooong tune! It's a good one though.

You got that right, CB. I had not heard the looooooooooooooooong version prior to the closing ceremonies and frankly, even though I do love the song, I hope I never hear it again. Every time there was a pause for breath, I thought, okay now its on with the show. Then they would start up all over again. Sheesh, enough already.

Anyone who learned to read and write prior to the politically correct, liberal, unionized so-called "teachers" taking over the education system and turned it into INDOCTRINATION, knows that "sons" means "children" just as "man" means "mankind or humanity".

It is only the feeble-minded, politically correct (pardon the redundancy) nitpickers who have problem with that.
