They say that our preoccupation with lawns and gardens harken back to the talus slopes in front of the caves that we lived in for hundreds of thousands of years in Eurasia. We're hard wired to do dumb things like trying to achieve the perfect lawn.Except people ARE denying it. They say it's 'weather'. It's why there's always such a damned argument over whether it's even happening.
In the end, it shouldn't matter if humans are adding to it to the extent people think or not. It's going on, it's changing and while I agree there are likely some companies who are out to profit off of it (like most companies), there are also others who likely aren't, who truly DO want to help make things better. Problem is they're lumped in with all the other asshole companies and thus all their efforts are seen as money grabbing and rejected.
Sure we're changing, just not enough to meet what could be possible. Considering this has been going on for years, all the warnings, no one's running around like chicken little, but rather people have been warning the fox was approaching the hen house, stalking the hen house, digging under the fence to the hen house and the dumbass farmer didn't pay attention. Now the fox is almost in and instead of being pissed at himself, the farmer is blaming the dog for not alerting him earlier when he could have done something about it BEFORE things got serious.
The other problem is that there IS no magic solution, and most people would say there isn't. But there are things we can TRY that aren't being tried, because again it's seen as money grabbing and then rejected.
I cut my lawn as little as possible and then when it is cut, I leave it fairly tall compared to the 'need to be golf green' short most people think it should be. I STOP cutting the lawn in September. I don't START cutting until June (depending on weather) which doesn't just give grass the time to grow, but gives the 'weeds' - dandelions - a chance to really pop up and help with the bees and other insects.
I don't use fertilizers or growers or any other enhancers.
My dad is one of those 'my lawn needs to be near perfect' kind of guys. No dandelions, no weeds, gives it growers sometimes...
Hell, part of my 'lawn' isn't lawn, but crud moss and forest undergrowth and one patch is all wild from being left after trying for a garden.
My point is though, overall, WHY can't we take care of the planet we have and push to invent things that will help protect our environment as much as possible? Why is it such a fight to do that? Coal is dirty, Oil is finite and not all that great either... yet pushing for other tech always meets resistance. Expensive? Sure, it will be - at first. Everything usually is. Then it goes down. But it won't go down if we don't even use it because of fear from the older 'we won't change' companies who don't give a shit about the world, just their profit margins.
Anyway, mine in a lot nicer than Barney's.
