If the Stampede Board and City can pull it off, it will be a stroke of marketing genius.

On a related note: Step outside and take a look at the moon tonight.

It's spectacular.

... Everything is gonna be OK

UHHHHHHHHH- NO.

Postponing to the last week of August makes a hell of a lot of Sense.

Since your idea requires a miracle, perhaps you and Durry can make a direct call to Jesus and report back to us ...

The million dollar question... is the City of Calgary responsible for the damages and flooding..

You see, the river was high, but it did not over flow it's banks or the man made dyke.

What happen was the sewage runoff backed up to the level of the river on the other side of the dyke.. should the city not have put in place a shut of valve to prevent this..

Is the City of Calgary liable for flood damage in areas where they did not take this precaution?

Wouldn't it make a hell of a lot more sense just to postpone it for a month, it's not like there is going to be any more important venues tying up the facilities?

The problem is JLM that most of the entertainment has been booked for months, people have all ready booked their flights or holidays for the dates of the Stampede.......and I am sure there are other things that impact when it can be held. I wish them all the luck in holding it - from the looks of things, they are going to need every single cent they can get their hands on to help with the clean-up and re-building.

Yep, it would cause inconvenience for sure..................big time, but I think any decent airline would allow their customers to rebook and I think the entertainers would be happy to rebook to get the business. I guess the burning question is now,is it physically and financially possible to get ready in time?

Just an unpopular reminder to Calgarians: There is no such thing as ‘price gouging’

Price-Gougers vs. Hoarders

I would make a terrible politician.

I have this awful tendency to say the right thing instead of what’s politically correct.

I lived in Calgary for eight terrific years. Most of my good friends still live there, as do many former colleagues and neighbours. My brother and his family are there, as is my wife’s sister and family, plus several aunts, uncles and cousins. I also loved my former neighbourhood, with its proximity to good restaurants, bars, shops, parks, downtown and the Stampede grounds. There were many reasons why we left town in 2008, but our family, friends and neighbourhood at the time were not any of them. I really love that town.

So it should not come to any surprise to you to learn that the recent massive flood in Calgary really shook me emotionally. My brother had to evacuate his house, as did a couple of my dearest friends. There were probably other friends and former colleagues forced out too.

My old neighbourhood was devastated, as were the lovely parks and pathways along the Elbow through which I roamed regularly.
It should without saying that many people are volunteering their time, energy and other resources in response to this environmental disaster. That’s wonderful and commendable.

However, a disturbing but inevitable trend comes from the backlash against those who are perceived to be less generous with their resources, as seen here:

If you have to live in a big city, Calgary is about as good as it gets, as is Edmonton. You get the four seasons although some of them can be short! -:)

It snows in Calgary in July. Nasty hail and minor flooding almost every summer from kick azz T-Storms that rip shingles off and topple trees not to mention the blizzards that can and do kill from being a mile high off of sea level, but yeah It's a flippin paradise.

You still have the problem of people having booked their holidays and not able to change them; entertainers who have other events all ready line up; hotels etc all ready booked; the list goes on, JLM. Where there is a will........as they say and there is plenty of will in Calgary to get the Stampede off the ground. Good luck to them...........they will need it.

Absolutely, there is no doubt there are going to be problems and some people are going to be inconvenienced, but that is what life's about. I'm all for going ahead with the stampede as long as it can be done safely and no one is put at risk. I guess "the proof is in the pudding".

We had a weird weather event here last Wednesday. The skies darkened, the wind picked up and the rain started....then it quickly grew to a torrential downpour followed by hail which increased in size as peals of thunder had my pets scurrying to my side and flashes of lightning lit the sky. My basement flooded and my driveway and pathways turned into small creeks. I got off lucky though as a tour of the neighborhood the next day. It looked as though a bomb had gone off over at Hawkins Lake. Power lines were down in several areas and huge.........and I mean huge trees were thrown all over the place. One of my neighbors lost eight large Spruce - their yard looked like a war zone. Several cabins and houses were damaged by falling trees and debris. In some places it took 11 hours for power to be restored. What was 'weird' about the storm was its capriciousness - some areas were hardly touched while others were devastated.

Reader Tips

This evening we gaze upon some solemn black & white images of some of the thousands of volunteers cleaning up the Bowness neighbourhood in NW Calgary. Taken by photographer Shaun Robinson, they provide a wonderful example of how effective the lack of colour in photographs can be in certain circumstances. Recommended background music while viewing the photos is provided by Canadian artist, Loreena McKennitt. Attentive viewers will notice that one of the volunteers is an Olympic class speed skater who was born in Romania but now is very much a proud Albertan.

Your solemn or witty reader tips are welcome, as always, in the comments.
