I love Canada just as much as the next fella, however I also have a loyalty to my pocketbook. Walmart is the only department store in our town. So thats where (much as I hate the local store) I shop.

Yep, you and 99% of other Canadians! If you are looking for the "crown jewels" you don't go to Walmart, it you are looking for paper clips, staples or scotch tape you buy from whomever can provide them at the lowest price. We are a world economy now and have to compete.

That's right JLM. You have to submit to Walmart. It is inevitable. Canadians will buy at Walmart in Canada or in the US. There will be no boycott. You will buy.

The more you buy the more you save.

Push that carriage and fill up!

Well, we don't want to go overboard. There is a common misperception perpetuated among marketers, that the more we buy the more we save, but that is stepping into the realm of fiction! -:)

That's immaterial, the cashiers are in the best position to establish their own wage. Obviously they must have been satisfied with it when they started! Maybe some of them were more concerned with gaining experience than the actual wage at the time. I know a woman who works at Walmart and loves it, her husband pulls down good money. How much the difference is there between what Walmart pays and what Saans pays or Army and Navy?

I need beach towels, they are cheap I like the design, I hate Walmart...hm, what to do?

Suck'er up, Buttercup. Go in and get the dang towel.

Haven't got the flyer for this week yet, but last week the store was awash in Canadian flags, buttons, pins, hats,.............nice !!!

All made in China !!!:lol::lol:

............best deal on 2% 4L bags of milk in town............made in Canada............not the bags.

Locally, Wally provides about 150 jobs...........albeit, mostly part time.

I don't know what the wage is, but a few gals who work there have told me they like it. Their hubby works also, and they do this for extra cash. Get to pretty much set their hours.

A lot of single mums work there. Good on em...

Retail is retail. No employee ever gets rich. Probably few plan to.

This is a subject that a lot of people have to stick their noses into. If the people working there are happy and the people shopping there are happy why screw with it? Where quality is a given I buy from who can supply the cheapest.

I find that one of the most aggravating things about any store. But to give the devil his due without Chinese made products the stores would have nothing but empty shelves. We are amazed to find a lot of the same stuff Walmart sells for several dollars at the local dollar stores for a buck or two. Its all from China anyway so we check at the dollar stores often before we go to Walmart.

I just saw flyers for both Sears and The Bay, and both acknowledged Canada Day here in Montreal. Same for Canadian Tire. It appears that out of the big boxstores, Walmart is the only one that refused to acknowledge Canada Day. If Walmart does not identify with Canadian culture, then maybe it should keep it's business back home in the U.S.

Maybe it's a don't-piss-off-the-separatiste thing. There was lots of Hoo-ray Canada in the Walmart flyer here. I got a free Canadian flag at Wallywhirled today when I refilled a prescription

I doubt it. If this was indeed their strategy, it was not a very good one, at least not in Montreal where the non-separatists outnumber the separatists by a margin of 3 to 1. This would alienate the non-separatist clientele which is bad for business. Furthermore, since all the other big box stores are acknowledging Canada Day in their Montreal advertising, I'll bet most of them are doing so since it's good for business. There's more to this than meets the eye.

I guess, if one is searching for insult, one can find insult. How is Walmart supposed to know who will be offended and who will not by the sight of a Canadian flag on "sovereign" Quebecois territory?

I'm fortunate enought to have never had to shop at a Walmart or such and as a consequence I've never been in one.

Of course by buying higher quality non-asian made products in the first place, I probably save money in the long run because my socks last for years, not 6 months etc..

And all those pictures of you Walmart shoppers are kinda of scary anyways............

A typical Costco worker made $45,000 in 2011, according to Fortune. That’s compared to Sam’s Club workers’ average salary of $17,486 per year, according to salary information site Glassdoor.com. Walmart has also been the target of protests by some of its workers, who are protesting what they say are the company’s low wages.

I've bought socks from walmart, and from Costco, and from Sears...... they all last about the same amount of time. So I pay less at walmart now for the same quality.

That's what I mean, but not just socks as that was just an example.

I buy higher quality clothing made either in Canada or Great Britian and it lasts forever but costs I'm sure more than than stuff made for $38.00 a month........

I guess I should add that you won't find the stuff I buy at a box store. You have to go to a small clothier, which, also keeps the money local in Canada and affords these retailers to pay higher wages......

what I'm saying, using YOUR sock example, is that paying more does not mean you are getting better quality. I have paid ridiculous prices for socks made locally only to have them wear out just as fast if not faster than the cheap "china made" socks from walmart.
