Agreed. But we still have to have a limit on when society or government can override a parent's decision. If we reversed this and say a kid died because the parent chose to go to a medical doctor instead of a Naturopath would you still feel the same about it?
Another thing to ponder on is at what point do we draw the line in medical intervention.

I think there are times and places where all health care professionals make valid contributions and are necessary in various cases, but I don't think there is a replacement for a good M.D. and a good one will refer you to a preferred professional. All the doctors I've had in recent years, I've found have only prescribed drugs as a last resort. It's not like they receive an extra nickel for every pill they prescribe. -:)

It is a fine line when the government overrides parental responsibility. Does this mean the medical community and the government take over the decision when the child has been injured and is now brain dead with regards to continued use of the respirator? Certainly one could argue that the respirator is a necessary for life.

In this case, I am not convinced that there is a cure for flesh eating bacteria. Do they not resist or act too fast for anti-biotics? Would actually taking him to a doctor have saved his life? Given that she did not abandon her child and acted in what she believed was the best interest of the child, what is served by charging her?

Its a tough case and lots of gray areas. Not sure I can see a right or wrong here.

WHy because I choose to go to a health care professional instead of a pill pusher?

When you place a child in harms way because you choose to believe that a homeopathic solution is better than seeing a trained licensed medical professional. Pill pusher, and I've met a few, is a pretty broad statement and while I'm all about Libertarian practice, I'm not about risking the lives of children.

Irony at it's best.

But he's right. Walter is an idiot.

Lots. There are a lot of similarities between this unfortunate death and JWs refusing transfusions. Many people insist that is wrong as well. Why should the government be permitted to decide what is best for everyone?

There is very little that I agree with Gov't. involving itself in, however there are two or three exceptions and that is when someone has to intervene where profit is NOT involved and that includes the welfare of those who are unable to protect themselves, especially children.

Seriously, the last decade with self taught internet experts, society is getting dumber and dumber. Children are dying when there are treatments available. Children are dying when disease prevention is available. That is phucking stupid.

Why even train people anymore, lets just watch youtube videos, DIY for everything and complete our reversion to societies of ignorant fools who bore holes in skulls, drink hydrogen peroxide, and have life expectancies of 35 years.

And who decides when that is?

The Judicial system will, when evidence is presented.

Thank God you are talking about the vast minority of society. Having had a fair amount of involvement with the medical profession this past year, all I've seen is dedication and professionalism as my improving state of health can attest to.

If by "pill pusher" you mean M.D.s I would guess the ones who prescribe pills as a last resort out number the pushers by 10/1 at least.
The vast majority just don't do that.

At the risk of inflaming the argument regarding naturopaths versus GP's. A good rule of thumb I have found, is this...

Acute issue...GP
Chronic issue...naturopath

I may take my daughter to a naturopath for her keratosis pilaris, but, I'm not going to head to the naturopath for the ankle I think might be broken, or the two weeks of low grade fever and malaise.

Good deduction, Karrie and I might just add a G.P. for a chronic issue that is getting rapidly worse.

I'm not talking about the professionals...I'm talking about the people who think they know better than the professionals. It's not a phenomenon confined to healthcare, though the consequences can be greater when it is healthcare we're talking about.

Of course. A big slice of pills are from natural sources too. Asparin, decongestants, blood thinners, antiseptics, and on and on and on.

An Rx in many cases is simply a controlled dose of a natural sourced remedy.

Controlled dose being the key.
