An 11 month old baby exclusively breastfed by a vegan mother has died and the parents are charged with neglect after an autopsy indicated the baby suffered from deficiencies in vitamin B12 and Vitamin A – both known to be critical to a child’s development.

Vegans have long been advised to take B12 supplements as long term veganism runs the huge risk of serious B12 deficiency as well as other nutrients only found in animal foods such as true Vitamin A. Beta carotene is not true vitamin A nor does it easily convert to adequate amounts of Vitamin A in the body.

While I’m not sure I favor charging the parents in this tragedy as it smacks of Big Brother far too much for my comfort level, it does communicate a clear message to other vegans: abstinence from all animal foods is a danger to one’s health and most particularly, your baby!

It also sends a clear message that what a breastfeeding Mother eats definitely DOES affect the quality of her breastmilk. Many breastfeeding advocates insist that breastmilk will include all a baby needs despite what the Mother eats, but clearly this is not the case.

Traditional cultures took great care to ensure that pregnant and breastfeeding mothers consumed ample amounts of animal foods rich in vitamins A, D, E, K and of course B12. These foods included grassfed butter, pastured eggs, liver, seafood, and fish eggs. Notice that none – NOT ONE of these traditionally sacred foods is plant based!

If you are pregnant and breastfeeding and would like to learn what foods will maximally support the health of your baby while nursing, please check this link for the complete listing of traditionally sacred foods for optimal fetal and baby development. These foods will also ensure the preservation of your own health during pregnancy and lactation which can easily deplete a Mother’s nutritional stores leaving her vulnerable to exhaustion.

*Update: The vegan parents whose baby died as described in this article were convicted by a French court to 5 years in prison due to the imbalanced vegan diet the mother ate which led to nutrient poor breastmilk and a failure to thrive child who eventually fell ill from severe nutrient deficiency and died without the parents ever seeking proper medical attention.

For more information on how a vegan diet devastates the health of children, read about how a 12 year old vegan was diagnosed with the degenerating bones of an 80 year old. Dr. Faisal Ahmed MD, a pediatrician treating the child, said that the dangers of forcing children to follow a strict vegan diet need to be publicized.

I'm also not sure about charging the parents but if they neglected signs of malnutrition then they definitely are to blame. I think the loss of the child is punishment enough though and a hard lesson. :(

Our 17 year old grand daughter is into this vegatarian/vegan sh*t and it's getting to be a real concern. Wish there was a law passed against promoting this sh*t!

Lots of people live perfectly healthy lives following diets like that, so there certainly isn't any need for a law.

I would have real problems with these people being convicted of anything if it were just based on not following a proper diet. If it is purely based on missing obvious signs that the child needed medical attention though, then that is much more reasonable.

the baby must have shown consistent deteriation over a period of time, and my gripe with this situation
is the parents not noticeing, or just ignoring signs of illness, lacking in weight gain, and a lack
of energy. baby would not have looked great, then quickly die from this problem.

a baby totally depends on the pArents for survival, this is very disturbing indeed.

maybe these people are totally stupid or mentally challenged, or disturbingly stubborn.

I knew an idiot who only used toronto tap water distilled from his home.
When they had their first kid he had this book that was totally against cow's milk.

so the child after breast feeding was over and it was eating solids foods he would not give her any cow's milk, no dairy products at all and distilled water.

I told him it would leach all valuable vitamins from their child's blood. And the child needed dairy for healthy bone growth.
He would not have any of it until the kid showed signs of hair loss.
He continued until the hair was thinner and thinner and then was told by a doctor the child is lacking minerals and asked about the child's diet . When told the doctor was shocked he was using strictly distilled water.

Parents might think they are doing the right thing but there are times like this where it's tragic.

As a parent you are responsible for the well being, education and overall care of your child. You are perfectly free to make certain life choices you deem fit for yourself, but when you inflict those decisions onto your children to the point where they are harmed, or in this case killed, then you are responsible for that, you were neglectful and therefore, the law applies and they should head to jail.

Maybe the loss of a child is a hard lesson.... but I don't base these things on hopes that parents will actually give a damn and are just putting on the face for media.... they need prison time to make sure the message hits home.

You don't d*ck around with parenthood and the well being of your children trumps your political, religious or hippy bean chewing principles.... and those go to the sideline.

I cannot speak for Code Napoleon, but to the best of my recollection of past studies, no one could be compelled to adopt any type of diet under the Common Law. Thus, Seven Day Adventists have been allowed to live by vegetarian diets for entire generations without government intrusionism. Previously, some Shakers communities practiced vegetarianism, again, without government imposing rules against it. The key being that adults are capable of informed consent and can adopt whatever regimens they wish. But in the past child welfare laws were not as expansive as they are today. It will be interesting to see how these laws and their enforcement evolve in the future.

For the life of me I can not fathom what is so hard to understand about the words and concept BALANCED DIET It's worked well for millions of years and some idiots think they are going to improve on it.

There are those who adopt a vegan diet for reasons of health and there are those who seemingly adopt it in an almost cult like fashion with some pretty clear disregard for actual health.

It is unfathomable that a child would die suddenly of malnutrition without showing some signs of ill health. They deserve this conviction, it's neglect the same as if they'd simply not fed him or her.

Um. . . no it doesn't. It communicates a clear message that vitamins A and B12 are essential to one's health and that of one's baby. The argument here makes sense only if one makes the phenomenally stupid and counterfactual assumption that animal foods are the only sources of these vitamins.

Nothing like an unjustified leap of logic to expose a True Believer.

Can't even begin to imagine the thought process here. When my daughter was born I'd have killed anyone who intentionally hurt her. My only concern was her. I had full fledged momma bear syndrome. I made all her baby food because I wasn't sure the processed jar stuff was good enough.

They have baby multi-vitmains in liquid form. I gave it to my daughter.

I can't imagine having done less or ignored a symptom or even thought about restricting her diet. Most parents concern is their children aren't eating enough...

Thought process? We're talking about someone with fewer brain cells than a barnacle!

k, let me head off and smoke a couple fatties and then I might be able fathom the thought process of a barnacle...

I think being vegan is indicative of a very low IQ.

That said, I absolutely agree with your post.

I'll go shoot myself now.

Can't ever imagine not eating steak. What's life all about anyway if you can't clog your arteries a bit.
