Personally I could care less about ADD/ADHD, if it's true or not.. I don't have any Brats, so not a serious concern.

However, if I did have a few brats, corporal punishment and military school are high on my list.. ;) makes for a well educated, polite and respectful person..

But then I think Canada, should adopt Israels mandatory military service for all young men and women who turn 18 years of age with no way out.. no religious BS excuses..

ALL Legal residents and citizens go when they hit 18 years of age.

AD/HD does exist but all too often the overdiagnosis is prevalent
Teachers would rather deal with drugs than the problem and the
reason is because the institution will not make enough funds available
to deal with the problem children which tend to vary from case to case.
The institutions, the teachers and the parents are to blame here for
over prescribing. The parents all too often are happy to find out its a
medical issue and they don't have to put direct time into the child they
can medicate the child. It is difficult agreed, we have one grandson
with the problem. He had a terrible time in the institutional school system
he quit.
The up side was he is now a fully trained carpenter in the trades as he went
back to the school system and then got his training. The school system is
not conducive to a lot of young adults, they are young adults not children and
the system treats them like children. Here in our school district a prime
example came about at the end of the year. The grade twelve classes in the
system were called to the office with their year book in hand. The teachers
then censored all the coment in the year book they found offensive.

Great they sold the book to the student, and then they mark out comments
the teacher deems inappropriate. When you start marking up people property
you sold them its Graffiti and defacing private property and teachers are abusing
their powers to become the bullies they condemn. LIke the young folks are not
going to get friends to re-write their remarks.

I realize why the one we had graduate this year said she hated school she did well
and has been accepted into a post secondary education but as she said the teachers
seem to have a problem minding their own business. Now put that into an ADHD
kid and you not only have problems you have flare ups.
The difficulty is we need to find out who has the genuine problem, who is just a troublemaker
and the teachers and the institution must address the needs of the students.
Parents need to be involved in the education process as well and not put all the burden on
teachers.

how much experience do you have raising or dealing with ADD/ADHD children?
ADHD has always been and will always be a make work project for psychologists and a money maker for big pharma. I taught school for decades and when I started teaching no one had ADHD and no children were on Ritalin. When I retired from teaching a few years ago some schools had as much as 20% of the students diagnosed and on Ritalin or some generic. It's all hooey.

:) No offense, but, I had all the answers prior to having kids too. Thus me finding out my kid was a 'mirror times three'. "Every kid could use a spank from time to time! " .... "Those parents would have better behaved kids if they'd just _______."

lol. It all goes out the window when you start raising children and realize they are individual human beings, not a formulaic droid.

A better study would have compared test scores of those subjects before taking the medication, with test scores after, and compared the difference to a placebo group.

A similar number of symptoms is irrelevant unless all symptoms are equal in effect, which is preposterous to assume.

The FDA disagrees with you entirely. The sloppier the study the better is their motto when and if they actually do any study at all.

Look if you want to debate without name calling, like an adult fine.

What do you think the draft is, mandatory military service.

The military teaches a person good principals, disaplines, and life skills. Personally, i think it makes a man out of boy.

I think to many Canadians feel entitled to our way of life and freedoms, and don't understand the cost associated with aquiring it.

Those that can't do, teach.

From what I'm hearing these days of "no one left behind", it seem that schools are aiming at the lowest common denominator. I think a lot of really brilliant kids are so bored with the BS they act out. I know I was bored senseless in school and I was barely average.

The point is, I have loads of experience with idiot teachers. I also have 4 boys with varying degrees of add/adhd. My 2 oldest being the worse. They were put on ritalin only after the school district suspended them and would not let them back into school untill they were medicated because the TEACHERS refused to listen to my wife and I as to what was the best way to handle the boys with the least amount of disruption. My 2 youngest were never medicated and the teachers in the Catholic Schools that we had them in were willing to listen to us, unlike the public schools my oldest kids went to. ADD/ADHD is a very real problem.

Northern Ontario,
Do they still prescribe Ritalin for ADHD?

Quite a few years ago a relative called me, because she didn't have a car to drive her and her son to the emerg.
She told me that he said his heart was "shaking"...I checked his pulse and could feel a definite arrhythmia and since I knew he was on Ritalin, when we got to the hospital I asked the nurse to call the poison center to find out if it was a side effect of Ritalin ....and it was!

The emergency room doctor happened to be the doctor who had prescribed it in the first place, so he switched his prescription to Atarax which would help him sleep at night and that seemed to cure his adhd symptoms......maybe he just didn't sleep well at night...dunno
