Do they still prescribe Ritalin for ADHD?

Quite a few years ago a relative called me, because she didn't have a car to drive her and her son to the emerg.
She told me that he said his heart was "shaking"...I checked his pulse and could feel a definite arrhythmia and since I knew he was on Ritalin, when we got to the hospital I asked the nurse to call the poison center to find out if it was a side effect of Ritalin ....and it was!

The emergency room doctor happened to be the doctor who had prescribed it in the first place, so he switched his prescription to Atarax which would help him sleep at night and that seemed to cure his adhd symptoms......maybe he just didn't sleep well at night...dunno

it depends on the child as to what they will try. Many many moons ago Ritalin was the go to drug. They now have a lot more options. Personally, I prefer to see the child taught coping tactics and ways to learn how to live with their ADD/ADHD.

I used to get like that from caffeine, so I can only imagine what Ritalin (essentially speed) would be like.

I had a friend with serious ADHD when he was young, and he'd started lashing out really badly. His behavioural issues were turning into social problems, and he was getting into fights at school and at home. The docs put him on Ritalin, because 'it will help him focus'. Oh boy, did it ever. After that, if you got him mad, there was no getting him not mad for hours. Pure rage.

Personally, I think doctors prescribe drugs too quickly and don't take the time to find out what else may be contributing to a specific malady/issue. We are an over prescribed population - have a problem? Here's a pill! If we just went out and excerised and had interests outside of TV, video games and computers, we'd all be a hell of a lot better off!

We're lazy - plain and simple. We expect instant gratification and solutions to everything and don't want to take responsibility for anything either. We don't want to have to "work" on becoming healthier and better persons because whatever "problems" we have is someone else's fault anyway. Seriously!!

What do you think the draft is, mandatory military service.

The military teaches a person good principals, disaplines, and life skills. Personally, i think it makes a man out of boy.

I think to many Canadians feel entitled to our way of life and freedoms, and don't understand the cost associated with aquiring it.

But that's why they sacrificed their lives..
So we could live this lifestyle, and never, Be forced the way they where.

Dead Canadian soldiers would be turning in their graves if they could read your post.
They made the ultimat sacrifice so mandatory service would never ever happen again.

You should honour those who made that sacrifice and be thankful and respectful of it.
Nothing more, nothing less....

Quit trolling Angstrom. My post does not insinuate any of the points you suggested. I think YOU feel that way, because YOU are the one who is saying that military service does not make you into a better person..

I think YOU feel your entitle to what Canada's has to offer, and you won't fight to keep Canada free if necessary. (typical Muzzie immigrant attitude)

Forced military service would not make anyone into better people. There's a big difference between choosing to serve, and taking on that personal journey, absorbing those lessons, and what happens when forced to do something.

Military service will not make you a better person.
Only one person can make that happen.

God will not make you a better person.
Only you have that power.

Canadian soldiers can rest in peace knowing.
Never again.

I am totally against mandatory military service.
But not for any reasons you could think of.
