Adolescent pot use shown to leave lasting, like, stuff and all

ScienceDaily (Aug. 27, 2012) — The persistent, dependent use of marijuana before age 18 has been shown to cause lasting harm to a person's intelligence, attention and memory, according to an international research team.

Among a long-range study cohort of more than 1,000 New Zealanders, individuals who started using cannabis in adolescence and used it for years afterward showed an average decline in IQ of 8 points when their age 13 and age 38 IQ tests were compared. Quitting pot did not appear to reverse the loss either, said lead researcher Madeline Meier, a post-doctoral researcher at Duke University. The results appear online Aug. 27 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The key variable in this is the age of onset for marijuana use and the brain's development, Meier said. Study subjects who didn't take up pot until they were adults with fully-formed brains did not show similar mental declines. Before age 18, however, the brain is still being organized and remodeled to become more efficient, she said, and may be more vulnerable to damage from drugs.

I dont think Pot makes you stupider, it just makes you lethergic..... If you sit on the couch all day smoking dope and playing video games then your going to appear to be retarded. It should come as no suprise that years of this kind of lifestyle will leave you at a dis advantage.... When you spend more time chilling and less time learning, your IQ wont keep pace with your age. In my opinion......

Basically being high on weed all day wastes your potential....

I smoke herb, but i read lots of books and play lots of chess, go and backgammon....

A pot head with real skillz can fight the overwhelming gravity of procrastination.....

While I don't use the stuff I don't have any problem with others enjoying their pastime.
there is a concentrated group that is dead set against it and they come with studies,
surveys and junk science to prove it is dangerous. I think they should just mind their
own business or sit around with a few Drinks and talk about it.
These same people are against cigarettes and almost anything else they can think of.
I often wonder how many are the board of directors of the condo strata committee.

i could have been a rocket scientist instead of a ****ty college educated technologist , damn marijuana
I smoked lots in my younger days,no lethargy here, the guys that did not smoke are happy to be stuck in one job for the rest of their life, that's lethargy.
When I retire I will get a medical cert. for it for my arthritis and rheumatism that are coming.
I figure if I'm going to be in constant pain I may as well be happy.

New Zealanders only? The south pacific did have a lot of weapons testing. I bet the average western adolescent have declining IQs for a host of other reasons. Heavy puter use, poor diet, pharmsuetical load, highscool alone destroys brain cells. 1000 isn,t much of a group is it?

What if there were other factors affecting the peoples IQ during the years between 13 and 38? Some dopers cant stop putting more than just their fingers up their noses....

As I have found, and this is by no means definitive research results, but most people unable to cope with dope have small easily befuddled brains to begin with. Cannabis should be mandatory for preschoolers.

Now drinking. They are always finding problems with the good stuff. Pretty soon,no eating,no.drinking,no smoking, guess they will find something bad about that as well. Yup, man dies because of not crapping due to the previous healthy diet.
