DaS, I know there are those out there, but I've just never bumped up against them. Never had a single person turn their nose up at a Merry Christmas

Neither have I, and in our neighborhood we have Koreans, Muslims, Chinese, random mixed race Canadians, American immigrants, British immigrants, etc etc...and almost all of them have Christmas decorations up.

As per usual, the media finds extremes to help spin their narrative. I imagine that these people are the minority, of a minority, of a minority of the population. But they will produce a huge amount of press.

Wankers.

What you see at Christamas at every mall, and many stores is the Sally Ann. They are on street corners etc ringing their bells. 2 Malls in TO banned the Sally Ann from ringing their bells.

Or stores that mandate the gretting - Happy Holidays. When i say Merry Christmas to a sales clerk i do not want to hear a retirn of " You to:.

Don't the malls usually end up reversing their decisions when they suddenly find themselves on the wrong end of public backlash?

I disagree with stores dictating how an employee wishes to greet someone. If they want to wish someone a Merry Christmas that should be their decision. If the stores feel that strongly against Christmas, then they should stop playing the Christmas music and stop selling the Christmas merchandise.

So far everyone I've run into have said it regardless. The majority of friends I've made here in Hawaii are latino, so I will throw in a few "Feliz Navidads" as well.

So Merry Christmas to one and all.....

And if you don't like it, then just ignore it

I figure that the stores should set the policy for how their employees interact with customers. If the employees want to do something different, go find a job somewhere else.

That said, an intelligent employer, and intelligent employee, don't need rules for this stuff.

Why do people work so hard at "changing tradition" regardless if it is based in religious belief, community celebration or personal family honors............it is pitiful, spiteful and without any common sense attached..... nobody should be denied voice to what they genuinely wish for another if done in good spirit.

Merry Christmas is an historical greeting during the pre-Christmas celebrations and events and as there is no insult nor harm attached to it, I think it should be honored and maintained - costing society nothing but honest good wishes.

A worthy ritual for people to honor rather than feel conflict over it any more than having been wished:
Happy Birthday!

Merry Christmas To All.

What I can't get through my head is how Christians wishing other people "Merry Xmas" takes anything away from anyone who doesn't celebrate Xmas. Is wishing someone a "Merry Xmas" insulting? If they are in Canada they are here for Xmas and I can only assume they'd rather by miserable than "merry".

I went out for a walk yesterday evening to look and see who had trees and the color of lights they used...

I was happily amazed at how many people actually had trees! colors and nice arrangements outside.

my faith in Christmas has been partially restored! :)

BTW, a thought for you all that a friend brought up here recently.

Stores saying Happy Holidays, is not necessarily about not wanting to say Merry Christmas. It's often about them not having the room to wish ALL their customers a happy observance of their winter festivals. Because being 'here first' doesn't mean Christians get to trump the Muslim community at the local grocery store when that store wishes everyone to know they are extending well wishes.

A Phrase people get all upset about saying -

Yup Merry Christmas

Why do people get upset about saying Merry Christmas - Happy Holidays -

They come up with all sorts of reasons, religious, this, that and whatever. I put it down to ignorance and bad manners.

So Merry Christmas to one and all

If they don't celebrate christmas, if they're not christian, then why the hell would you expect them to smile at you and thank you for shoving your religious dogma in their faces?

Good intentions?

Yeah, we seen what those get us..... further excuse to shove more religious crap down one's throat.

Tell someone to fk'off..... and they usually do, otherwise, they'll lose their Christmas spirit & cheer and prove how deep their holiday joy really goes.

I often wonder where people are at that 'merry christmas' is 'banned' or upsets people.

I guess there are advantages to being in the Maritimes. We say Merry Christmas.

Indeed, I don't have any issues with it, I still celebrate christmas, I still say merry christmas.... but I also get how it can annoy or piss some people off.

Think about it..... one person is minding their own business and then someone comes along and say Merry Christmas. They get pissed and tell the guy to get bent, and then the guy who said Merry Christmas is all upset and offended that he didn't get the response he was expecting.....

.... don't get all upity over the response you get..... you started it.

Courtesy is becoming lost by many - Good manners as well - Having lived in a variety of countries with differing cultures and religions. They all had specific phrases to celebrate this or that - I do not find it ignorant to reply to a Muslim greeting in the same way a Muslim would. So no i am not at all uppity, nor on a high horse do i sit.

Courtesy and manners - Is that such a problem for those that it pisses off - It just shows their personal mentality, lack of manners, courtesy, respect and tolerance to name just a few character deficiencies in my humble and lowly opinion. no one is shoving anything down anyones throat. Least of all me.
